📰 Mentor’s First Responders 5K Honors Fallen Officer, Supports K9 Heroes
This Sunday, the annual First Responders 5K will take place in Mentor, continuing a tradition that began in memory of Police Officer Matthew Mazany. Officer Mazany tragically lost his life in June 2018 when he was struck by an impaired driver on Route 2 in Lake County. The section of the highway between Routes 306 and 615 now bears his name, serving as a somber reminder of his service and sacrifice.
In the wake of Mazany's death, Mentor resident Melissa Evans, deeply moved by the tragedy, organized the First Responders 5K to honor his memory and support his family, despite not knowing them personally. Since its inception, the race has grown into an annual event, held every September, with proceeds benefiting various first responder-related causes. Each year, the event focuses on a different organization dedicated to supporting those who serve, particularly those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year, the proceeds from the 5K will go to K9 Heroes 4 Heroes, a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs at no cost to veterans and first responders. The event is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Mentor Senior Center on Munson Road, with the race route winding through the city. Participants can still register online for $30 until Saturday, September 7, or in person on the day of the race for $35. Early registration will start at 7:30 a.m. on race day.

🛶 Witness Wildlife's Winter Prep on a Guided Fall Paddle

TODAY: 4:30PM - 6:30PM
As autumn sets in, it’s not just the season of pumpkin spice and cozy flannels—nature is bustling with activity as wildlife prepares for the harsh winter months ahead. Birds like warblers are embarking on their lengthy migrations south, while industrious beavers are busy creating food caches to sustain them through the cold. Predators such as coyotes and foxes are intensifying their hunts, building up the fat reserves needed for winter survival.
For those interested in experiencing this flurry of natural activity, a guided paddle through the preserve offers the perfect opportunity. A naturalist will lead the excursion, providing insight into the fascinating behaviors of these animals. The trips, which last between one and two hours depending on the weather, invite participants to bring their own kayak or paddleboard, though rentals are also available at the marina.
📰 Moody’s Reaffirms Lake County’s Aa1 Bond Rating Amid Major Safety Center Plans
Lake County has successfully maintained its prestigious Aa1 bond rating from Moody’s Investors Service, a crucial development as the county prepares for its largest-ever project, the Public Safety Center. This affirmation of financial stability comes just ahead of the issuance of bonds for the project, including $70 million in Correctional Facilities Bonds and $50 million in Correctional Facilities Notes, which received a top-tier MIG 1 rating.
Moody's highlighted Lake County’s exceptionally strong financial position, with available fund balance and liquidity at 49% and 143% of revenue, respectively, as of the end of fiscal 2022. This robust financial health has enabled the county to advance with the $205 million Public Safety Center project without raising taxes.
The project will be financed through a mix of short-term and long-term debt, alongside funds accumulated over the last decade. The county currently holds $146 million in total outstanding debt.
County leaders expressed confidence in Lake County’s financial planning, emphasizing that the reaffirmed Aa1 rating is a testament to the hard work of various county offices and their commitment to public safety.

👨⚕️ Slow the Aging Process Naturally with These Nutrient-Rich Foods
The quest to naturally slow the aging process has been a topic of interest for centuries. While there is no magical solution to completely halt aging, incorporating specific anti-aging foods into your diet can significantly help in maintaining a youthful appearance and promoting overall health.
Anti-aging foods are not just about aesthetics; they provide essential nutrients that support various bodily functions, from skin health to brain function and heart protection. The most effective anti-aging foods are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, which combat oxidative stress—a major contributor to aging and age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, and diabetes.
How Anti-Aging Foods Work
Aging is closely linked to oxidative stress and inflammation. These processes damage cells over time, leading to various health issues and visible signs of aging. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to perceived threats, but chronic inflammation, often caused by poor dietary choices, accelerates aging. By reducing or eliminating foods that trigger inflammation, such as refined carbohydrates, sugary foods, and red meat, you can help slow down the aging process.
Incorporating foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds can help block pathways leading to chronic inflammation, thus reducing the risk of age-related diseases and keeping the body functioning optimally.
Top Anti-Aging Foods
Blueberries: These berries are packed with anthocyanins, which protect brain cells from oxidative damage and slow cognitive decline.
Dark Chocolate: High in antioxidants, dark chocolate can improve heart health and protect skin from aging, but it should be consumed in moderation.
Nuts: Rich in healthy fats, nuts like walnuts and pecans can reduce the risk of heart disease and cognitive decline.
Figs: Loaded with flavonoids and polyphenols, figs help combat oxidative stress and protect against neurodegenerative diseases.
Collagen Protein: Collagen supports skin elasticity and joint health, making it a popular ingredient in both supplements and beauty products.
Chaga Mushrooms: These mushrooms are potent antioxidants with immune-boosting properties, helping to protect against infections and age-related diseases.
Salmon: Rich in astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant, salmon supports brain health and reduces inflammation.
Bone Broth: Packed with amino acids and collagen, bone broth supports gut health, joint function, and skin elasticity.
Maca: Known for balancing hormones, maca can improve bone density and alleviate symptoms of menopause.
Avocado: This superfood is full of monounsaturated fats and antioxidants that keep arteries healthy and support skin health.
Turmeric: The curcumin in turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to protect the brain and joints from aging.
Precautions
While these foods offer significant benefits, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider if you are on medication, as some foods may interact with prescriptions. For instance, turmeric can interfere with blood thinners, and chaga mushrooms may interact with anticoagulant and hypoglycemic medications.
Final Thoughts
The pursuit of youth has led many to explore various methods, from creams to surgery. However, incorporating anti-aging foods into your daily diet offers a natural and effective way to slow the aging process from the inside out. These foods are easily accessible and provide a wide range of health benefits, making them a smart addition to any diet.

⚾ Guardians Defeat Royals, Extending KC’s Losing Streak to Seven
The Kansas City Royals' season is spiraling downward after suffering their seventh consecutive loss, falling 7-1 to the Cleveland Guardians at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals now have a 75-65 record and trail the division-leading Guardians by 5.5 games with just 22 games remaining in the season. While the Royals retained their 4.5-game lead over the Boston Red Sox for the final Wild Card spot, their playoff chances are growing slimmer.
Offensive struggles remain a significant issue for Kansas City, as they managed just four hits in the game. Paul DeJong provided the team's only run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, but the Royals failed to capitalize with the bases loaded. Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio led the Cleveland offense with a two-run homer and four RBIs.
Royals starter Brady Singer delivered a solid outing, allowing two runs in 5 ⅔ innings. Despite this, the Royals' bullpen faltered, giving up five runs in the late innings. The team was also without manager. Cleveland’s starter Tyler Bibee (11-6) pitched a great game going 6 innings and giving up just one run on two hits.
