🪿 Mentor Urges Residents to Avoid Feeding Canada Geese Amid Health Concerns

Canada geese, a migratory species protected by federal law, are a common sight in Mentor, often spotted foraging in open spaces around the city. While many residents may remember feeding them as a cherished childhood pastime, this well-meaning activity can actually cause harm. Feeding geese disrupts their natural behaviors, encouraging prolonged stays in urban areas and even causing some to abandon their migration patterns altogether.
One of the biggest concerns with the increasing goose population is the health risk posed by their waste. A single goose can produce up to one-and-a-half pounds of feces daily, with frequent movements occurring every twenty minutes. Their droppings can carry harmful bacteria, including E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, which can contaminate local water sources like ponds and puddles, posing a threat to humans, pets, and other wildlife.
In response to these concerns, the Mentor City Council enacted Ordinance No. 23-0-077 last year, officially classifying Canada geese as a "Nuisance Health Risk Animal." The ordinance makes it illegal to knowingly harbor or feed these nuisance animals, with violations classified as a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
With over 1,200 acres of parkland, Mentor offers residents plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature. However, it's important to let wildlife, like Canada geese, rely on their natural food sources to maintain a healthy ecosystem.
For more information on Canada geese and their impact, you can visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.
📰 22 Ohio Counties Declared Natural Disaster Areas Amid Severe Drought
Ohio is grappling with severe drought conditions this summer, with 22 counties now designated as natural disaster areas by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The hardest-hit areas are in the southeast, where many farmers are facing significant losses due to the prolonged dry weather. This declaration allows farmers in those 22 counties, along with 18 neighboring counties, to apply for emergency federal loans to help recover.
The USDA's Farm Service Agency announced the decision on Tuesday, citing that these counties have experienced eight or more consecutive weeks of severe drought. The emergency loans available to farmers can be used to replace essential equipment or livestock, reorganize farming operations, or refinance debts. Applications for these loans will be accepted until April 28, 2025, with eligibility based on the extent of losses and ability to repay.
The counties directly impacted include Athens, Belmont, Fairfield, Fayette, Gallia, Guernsey, Harrison, Highland, Hocking, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Ross, Vinton, and Washington. Neighboring counties such as Adams, Brown, Carroll, and others are also eligible.
The summer of 2024 has been particularly dry, with Columbus experiencing its third driest summer on record since 1879. From June to August, the city only received 5.07 inches of rain, far below the usual 12.74 inches. Across Ohio, 75% of the state is experiencing some level of drought, and nearly 43% is facing "Severe Drought" conditions or worse. For the first time ever, parts of Athens and Meigs counties have been classified under "Exceptional Drought" conditions.
Rain is expected to arrive in central Ohio by Friday, offering a slight relief from the ongoing dry spell.

🐕🐈⬛ Understanding Pet Food Labels: Key Tips for Choosing Quality
Nutrition and Diet: Understanding Pet Food Labels
Choosing the right food for your pet can be overwhelming, especially when faced with a sea of pet food labels. Understanding what’s on those labels is key to making informed decisions for your pet's nutrition.
Ingredients List:
The first thing to check on a pet food label is the ingredients list. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, with the heaviest listed first. High-quality pet foods typically have a named animal protein source, such as chicken or lamb, as the first ingredient. Be cautious of vague terms like “meat meal” or “animal fat,” as they can come from mixed sources. If a carbohydrate source like corn or wheat appears near the top, the food may contain more fillers than actual nutrients.
Guaranteed Analysis:
The guaranteed analysis section provides information on the minimum percentages of protein and fat and the maximum percentages of fiber and moisture. For most pets, a balanced diet should include at least 18-22% protein for dogs and 26-30% for cats. However, the guaranteed analysis doesn’t tell you how digestible the nutrients are, so the quality of the ingredients is still crucial.
AAFCO Statement:
Look for the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutritional adequacy statement. This ensures that the food meets the minimum standards for pet nutrition. The label will say something like "complete and balanced," meaning it’s formulated to provide all the nutrients your pet needs for a particular life stage, such as growth, maintenance, or pregnancy.
Life Stage and Feeding Guidelines:
Pet food should be tailored to your pet’s age, size, and activity level. Puppies and kittens need more calories and nutrients than adult or senior pets, so choose a food that specifies the correct life stage. Feeding guidelines on the label are just a starting point; you may need to adjust based on your pet's individual needs and activity levels.
Avoid Marketing Gimmicks:
Lastly, don't be swayed by buzzwords like “organic,” “holistic,” or “natural” without understanding what they mean. These terms are not strictly regulated, so focus more on the ingredients and nutritional content.
By knowing how to read and understand pet food labels, you can ensure your furry friend gets the balanced nutrition they deserve.
⚾ Tommy Pham's Three-Run Blast Ends Royals' Skid, Beats Guardians
Tommy Pham's first home run as a Royal lifted Kansas City to a 4-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Pham's three-run homer, part of a four-run fourth inning, broke a 1-1 tie and marked his eighth homer this season.
Kansas City starter Seth Lugo pitched seven solid innings, giving up just one run and five hits, improving his record to 15-8. His performance keeps him one win shy of the MLB lead. Kansas City (76-65) now sits just one percentage point behind Minnesota for the second AL Wild Card spot.
Cleveland's José Ramírez opened the scoring in the third with a bloop single, but Ben Lively (11-9) struggled, allowing four runs on seven hits. Kris Bubic struck out the side in the eighth, and Lucas Erceg secured his ninth save in the ninth inning.
