π° Lake Catholic Teacher Pleads Guilty to Assault, Avoids Sexual Battery Charges
Andrew Piczer, a former teacher at Lake Catholic High School, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges of assault and unlawful restraint. The more serious charges of sexual battery were dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Joan Synenberg sentenced Piczer to two years of probation. In addition, he must serve a three-day jail term, pay a $1,000 fine, and surrender his teaching license. Piczer has been ordered not to contact the victim and to write an apology letter.
The incident that led to these charges occurred on October 22, involving Piczer and a student. He was initially placed on administrative leave and later terminated by the school on December 21, as confirmed by the Diocese of Cleveland. The diocese emphasized that student safety remains their top priority.
The investigation into the case was first handled by the Mentor Police Department, which then passed it to Lakewood Police after determining any inappropriate contact likely took place in Lakewood. Piczer was indicted on four counts of sexual battery in January, at which time a $25,000 bond was set.

π©βπΎ Ohio Loses 268,000 Acres of Farmland to Urban Development Over Two Decades

Over the past two decades, Ohio has experienced a significant reduction in agricultural land due to increasing development. Between 2001 and 2021, the state lost 268,430 acres of farmland, representing a 2.04% decline. Nearly half (48%) of this loss is directly attributed to urban and industrial expansion.
A recent study highlights that Ohio's situation mirrors that of neighboring Midwest states, where the average loss of farmland is around 55%. However, this conversion from agricultural to developed land is particularly concentrated in Ohio's 14 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), which accounted for 78% of all land lost in the state. Franklin and Delaware Counties, part of the Columbus metropolitan area, saw the highest losses, with 13,170 and 9,547 acres respectively.
The report also emphasizes the stark impact of development within urban centers. In Columbus alone, 19,670 acres of farmland were lost within just three miles of the cityβs boundaries. Toledo and Dayton followed, with 1,976 and 1,901 acres lost to development, respectively.
This rapid conversion of farmland to developed land raises concerns about the sustainability of Ohio's agricultural industry and the preservation of rural landscapes.
