🏡 Prepare Your Yard for Winter: Fall Landscaping Tasks You Shouldn’t Skip

As the vibrant colors of autumn sweep through neighborhoods, it's a great time for homeowners to focus on seasonal landscaping tasks. Fall offers the perfect opportunity to prepare your yard for the cooler months ahead while ensuring it flourishes when spring arrives. Here are a few essential tips to help every homeowner keep their landscapes looking beautiful this autumn.

1. Rake and Mulch Fallen Leaves

Autumn is synonymous with fallen leaves, but instead of simply raking and bagging them, consider mulching them. By running over leaves with a mower, they break down into small pieces that can serve as natural fertilizer. This helps enrich your soil and protects your lawn from compaction over winter.

2. Prepare Garden Beds

Clearing away dead plants, weeds, and debris from your garden beds is an essential autumn task. It prevents diseases from spreading and reduces pest activity. Once cleared, add a layer of compost to nourish the soil over winter and cover the beds with mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

3. Prune Trees and Shrubs

Pruning in the fall is essential for promoting healthy growth in the spring. Focus on removing dead or damaged branches to reduce the risk of disease. If necessary, shape shrubs and trees, but avoid heavy pruning as some plants may become stressed before winter.

4. Plant Fall Bulbs

Autumn is the perfect time to plant spring-blooming bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. Plant them before the ground freezes, ensuring they are positioned deep enough to avoid freezing. These bulbs will settle over winter and bloom as soon as spring arrives, adding vibrant color to your landscape.

5. Aerate and Seed the Lawn

To ensure a lush, green lawn in spring, autumn is ideal for aeration and overseeding. Aerating allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots more efficiently. Overseeding helps fill in any thin areas, encouraging a thicker, healthier lawn.

6. Water Before the First Frost

Though fall brings cooler temperatures, your plants and lawn still need water. Deep watering, especially after planting new bulbs or reseeding, helps plants establish strong roots before winter dormancy.

By following these fall landscaping tips, homeowners can ensure their gardens and lawns are well-prepared to withstand the winter while setting the stage for a thriving spring landscape.

⚾ Guardians Triumph as Cantillo Secures First Major League Win, Flirts with Perfection

In an exciting matchup on Monday night, the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-3, propelled by Joey Cantillo's stellar performance on the mound. The 24-year-old left-hander achieved his first major league win in spectacular fashion, pitching seven near-perfect innings.

Cantillo, recalled from Triple-A Columbus earlier that day, dominated the game with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He maintained a perfect game until the seventh inning when Andrew Benintendi broke through with a single. The White Sox managed to score one run off Cantillo before he closed out his impressive outing.

The Guardians' offense supported their pitcher with timely hitting. David Fry and Bo Naylor both contributed solo home runs, while Steven Kwan set the tone from the leadoff spot, reaching base three times and scoring twice. The victory solidified Cleveland's position atop the AL Central division.

For the struggling White Sox, this loss marked their 13th consecutive defeat at home, a new franchise record. Their overall record of 33-112 puts them dangerously close to the modern MLB record for most losses in a season, currently held by the 1962 New York Mets.

Despite the lopsided score, there was a bright spot for Chicago as Bryan Ramos hit his first major league home run, a two-run shot in the eighth inning.

The series continues tonight with Jonathan Cannon (3-9, 4.53 ERA) taking the mound for Chicago. The rookie right-hander looks to build on his recent success, having pitched 5.2 strong innings in his last outing against Baltimore. Cleveland has yet to announce their starting pitcher for the game.
