📰 Lake County Family Seeks Answers After Infant's Severe Abuse

Makenna Rae

A Lake County family is seeking answers and support after their infant granddaughter, Makenna Rae, suffered severe abuse. Jennifer Kvoriak, now the full-time caregiver for Makenna, describes a life-altering incident that took place over Memorial Day Weekend. The six-month-old weighed only 12 pounds at the time, and her condition quickly became critical.

Makenna was hospitalized at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, where she was intubated for eight days due to head trauma. Her situation was dire, with extensive bruising, organ damage, and numerous broken bones. Despite her significant injuries, which left her blind and unable to eat, Makenna has shown incredible resilience. She is currently healing at home under Kvoriak's care, who had to leave her job to meet Makenna's intensive medical needs.

The circumstances surrounding Makenna's injuries are under criminal investigation by the Lake County Prosecutor's Office and Willowick Police Department. The family, including their attorney Laura DePledge, is urging anyone with information to come forward, hoping that community support can help uncover the truth and bring justice for Makenna.

As Makenna's future remains uncertain, with questions about her ability to sit, stand, walk, or talk, her family is focused on her recovery. They have set up a GoFundMe to help cover the costs of her treatment, including specialty equipment and medications. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Willowick Police Detectives at 440-585-1234.

🦟 LCGHD Announces Mosquito Control Schedule for September 16-19

The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) is actively conducting mosquito treatments across densely populated areas in Lake County. These treatments aim to minimize the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and enhance summer comfort for residents. Mosquitoes in the region can carry diseases such as La Crosse and St. Louis Encephalitis Virus, with human cases previously recorded within the district. The spread of the West Nile Virus has further emphasized the public health risk posed by mosquitoes.

The LCGHD holds a pesticide application license from the Ohio Department of Agriculture to carry out mosquito control efforts.

For the upcoming week starting September 16, 2024, the mosquito spray schedule is as follows, contingent on favorable weather conditions:

  • Monday, 9/16/24: Mentor 1A (Eastern portion of Mentor)

  • Tuesday, 9/17/24: Mentor 1B (Eastern portion of Mentor), Kirtland 12A, Kirtland 12B

  • Wednesday, 9/18/24: Perry 14

  • Thursday, 9/19/24: Willowick 6

Residents can find the latest schedule updates by calling the Mosquito Hotline at (440) 350-2088 or by visiting the LCGHD website.

⚾ Guardians Fall to Rays 3-1, Offense Struggles Continue at Progressive Field

The Cleveland Guardians fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 in Friday night's game at Progressive Field, marking their second straight loss in the series. The Rays were powered by home runs from Logan Driscoll and Jonathan Aranda, while their starter Zack Littell pitched five scoreless innings. Despite a near-home run from David Fry and a first career triple from Jhonkensy Noel, the Guardians couldn't overcome the Rays' lead. Christopher Morel left the game with Achilles discomfort, and Steven Kwan was scratched from the lineup due to body fatigue. The Guardians' magic number to clinch a playoff spot now remains at seven.

Tanner Bibee got the loss for the Guardians despite pitching well through 6 innings. He gave up 8 hits, 3 earned runs and struck out 9.

🏈 Mentor Cardinals Dominate Medina 49-14 to Stay Undefeated

The Mentor Cardinals continued their undefeated streak with a convincing 49-14 victory over the Medina Battling Bees in a conference matchup last night. The Cardinals set the tone early and maintained control throughout the game, showcasing their offensive prowess and solid defense.

Mentor got on the board first with Jackson Farley’s 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead with 9:21 remaining in the first quarter. Farley quickly became the standout player of the night, adding two more touchdowns on runs of 56 and 4 yards, extending Mentor's lead to 21-0. The Cardinals’ defense also made its mark, with Chase Coleman coming up with a crucial interception off a deflection, ending the first quarter with Mentor firmly in command.

In the second quarter, Mentor’s offense continued to shine. Mentor Quarterback Scotty Fox connected with WR Justen Hodge for two touchdown passes of 25 and 11 yards, increasing the lead to 35-0. Medina managed to respond with a touchdown of their own, making the halftime score 35-7 in favor of the Cardinals.

The third quarter saw both teams held scoreless. However, the Cardinals regained their offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter. Fox threw another touchdown pass, this time to WR Austin Van Huss from 16 yards out, extending the lead to 42-7. Medina answered back with a long touchdown pass, but Mentor sealed their victory with a defensive highlight—a pick-six by Xayvion Dunn—bringing the final score to 49-14.

With this win, the Mentor Cardinals improve to a perfect 4-0 record. They now turn their attention to next week's Homecoming game against Cleveland Heights.

🏈 Cougars Roar to 4-0 with Decisive Victory Over Rebels

The Lake Catholic Cougars delivered a commanding performance against the Willoughby South Rebels last night at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium in Mentor, securing a decisive 47-0 victory. The Cougars dominated from the start, scoring early and consistently throughout the game.

The onslaught began with DJ Sears catching a swing pass from Cougar QB Frankie Trinetti and then breaking free for an impressive 62-yard touchdown, putting Lake Catholic up 6-0. Not long after, Trinetti connected with Sears again, this time on a 12-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 13-0 with 7:29 left in the first quarter. Caden Boyes then added to the scoreboard with a 21-yard touchdown run, pushing the Cougars' lead to 20-0. Jimmy Gibbons capped off a dominant first quarter with a nearly untouched 31-yard run into the end zone, making it 27-0.

The second quarter was more of the same for Lake Catholic. Trinetti found Gibbons for a 13-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 2-yard touchdown run by Sears, giving the Cougars a commanding 40-0 lead at halftime. The final blow came in the fourth quarter when George Csepegi powered through for a 1-yard touchdown run, sealing the score at 47-0.

Lake Catholic's record now stands at a perfect 4-0. Their defense has been a formidable force this season, conceding only 7 points across four games, showcasing their dominance on both sides of the ball.

*CORRECTION: Yesterday’s issue stated that “Willoughby South suffered a 28-7 loss to Brush”. However, that was incorrect. Willoughby South defeated Brush by the same score. Thank you to our readers for the correction.
