👶 Mentor Firefighters Celebrate Heartwarming Reunion After Assisting in Baby’s Birth

Firefighters in Mentor recently experienced a heartwarming moment that stood in stark contrast to the tragedies they often face. Members of the city's fire department were called to action in the early morning hours of July 5 to assist a woman named Brianna, whose water had broken, with intense contractions indicating her baby was coming soon.
Recognizing they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time, her husband Joe dialed 911, and a crew from Station 5, on “A” shift, responded. As they transported Brianna, the baby made his appearance en route, and the firefighters helped deliver him safely in the ambulance.
At 4:12 a.m., baby Austin was born, healthy and strong, thanks to the quick thinking and care of the firefighters. Months later, Brianna, Joe, and baby Austin returned to the fire station for a heartwarming reunion. The crew—Jason Duke, Robert Tassone, Patrick Knowlton, and Travis Willis—were overjoyed to see the family again and meet the baby they helped bring into the world. The firefighters commented on how big Austin had already grown, and the reunion became a moment of gratitude and celebration.
🐕🦺 Mentor City Council Approves $250K Fund for Police K9 Unit
The Mentor City Council has approved the creation of a $250,000 fund to support the city's police K9 unit. This fund will cover expenses such as training, pet supplies, protective gear, health care, and veterinary costs, as well as food and specialized transportation for the K9 officers. Additionally, the fund will allow for the purchase of future K9 officers as needed.
The decision to establish the fund comes a month after the sudden passing of K9 Officer Achilles. During the council meeting, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak revealed plans to reintroduce a second K9 unit to the department in the future.
The fund will be sourced from the Irene G. Greene Charitable Remainder Unitrust, a trust left by Greene, who passed away in 2023. The Mentor Police Department was recently informed that they are a beneficiary of this trust, which will support the department’s K9 operations.
Council President Sean Blake and Filipiak both expressed their appreciation for the generous contribution and Greene’s legacy, recognizing the vital support this funding provides for the K9 program. Earlier in the day, neighboring police departments attended a remembrance ceremony for Achilles, along with their K9 officers, to honor the fallen K9 and show solidarity.
Filipiak noted the strong camaraderie among the local police K9 units, emphasizing how they work and train together, benefitting from each other’s expertise.

🕹️ Nostalgia Lounge Arcade Bar: Where Memories Come to Play

Nostalgia Lounge Arcade Bar
In the heart of our community, a unique establishment has opened its doors, inviting patrons to step back in time while creating new memories. Nostalgia Lounge Arcade Bar, the brainchild of a local entrepreneur, offers a perfect blend of retro gaming and modern dining.
The owner's journey from fast food management to arcade bar proprietor is as compelling as the establishment itself. With experience at McDonald's, Boston Market, and Aldi, coupled with a Business Management degree from Kent State University, he honed the skills needed to bring this vision to life.
Inspired by a personal loss and fueled by a passion for gaming, the owner transformed a garage arcade into a full-fledged business. The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges, but also opportunities. Using inheritance funds initially invested in a limousine business, he pivoted to acquire the arcade games that now form the cornerstone of Nostalgia Lounge.
The bar's signature drink, "Big Mama Sour Supreme," pays touching tribute to the owner's late mother, whose legacy made this dream possible. After two years of planning and construction, supported by a loan from Huntington and the backing of family and friends, Nostalgia Lounge Arcade Bar became a reality.
More than just an eatery or gaming center, this venue is a destination where past and present collide. It offers a safe, welcoming environment for patrons to relive cherished memories and create new ones. The unique combination of restaurant, bar, and arcade caters to a diverse crowd, united by a love for nostalgia and fun.
The success of Nostalgia Lounge Arcade Bar is a testament to community support. Local businesses like Pizzi's Flooring, Cloven Hoof Brewing, Pintabona Construction, and G-Licious Pizza played crucial roles in bringing this concept to fruition.
As you step into Nostalgia Lounge Arcade Bar, prepare for a journey through time. Whether you're challenging friends to a classic game or savoring a meal, each visit promises to be an adventure in nostalgia and new experiences alike.

⚾ Guardians Clinch Playoff Spot with Walk-Off Win
The Cleveland Guardians secured their place in the American League playoffs with a thrilling 3-2 walk-off victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday afternoon. This win marks their second consecutive walk-off triumph and guarantees them one of the six postseason spots in the AL.
The clinching scenario was straightforward: win and they're in. The Guardians rose to the occasion, joining the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers as the only MLB teams to have clinched playoff berths so far this season.
The game-winning moment came in extra innings when Andres Gimenez hit a single to right field, driving in Jose Ramirez from second base. This clutch hit sent the home crowd at Progressive Field into a frenzy and sparked celebrations in the Guardians' dugout.
This victory follows Wednesday's dramatic 5-4 win, where Josh Naylor's multi-homer performance put the team on the brink of clinching. The back-to-back walk-off wins in extra innings are a feat the franchise hasn't achieved since September 2018.
With their playoff spot now secure, the Guardians can focus on finishing the regular season strong and preparing for their upcoming postseason challenge.
🏈 Mentor Aims to Stay Perfect Against Defending GCC Champ Cleveland Heights

Tigers v. Cardinals
The Cleveland Heights Tigers will travel to face the Mentor Cardinals in a high-stakes Greater Cleveland Conference game on Sept. 20 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Mentor is undefeated at 4-0, while Cleveland Heights stands at 2-2 for the season.
Mentor, coming off a dominant 49-14 win over Medina, seeks to maintain its flawless record and extend its offensive momentum. Quarterback Scotty Fox has been a key player for the Cardinals, amassing 833 passing yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season. Running back Jackson Farley adds power to the ground game with 592 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Mentor’s defense has also been solid, led by Spencer Barninger and Caden Clare, who have recorded 36 and 32 tackles, respectively.
The Cleveland Heights Tigers are the defending GCC champions, and they handed Mentor a 14-13 overtime defeat last season, although Fox missed that game due to injury. This year, Heights has struggled to get its offense going, averaging just 15 points per game. The Tigers narrowly edged past winless Brunswick, 20-17, last week, thanks in large part to running back Marquise Davis, who ran for 227 yards despite battling injuries this season. Elijah Harris has also seen significant carries as a result of Davis' health concerns.
Cleveland Heights will need a strong defensive performance to slow down Mentor's high-powered offense. If the Tigers can’t contain Fox and Farley, their chances of keeping pace in an offensive shootout will be slim.
🏈 Lake Catholic Cougars Remain Undefeated with 34-20 Victory over Kenston

The Lake Catholic Cougars continued their winning streak, defeating Kenston 34-20 in a thrilling match that showcased the team's offensive prowess and resilience. With this victory, the Cougars improved their record to an impressive 5-0 for the season.
DJ Sears led the charge for Lake Catholic, scoring three touchdowns throughout the game. He opened the scoring with a 3-yard run, followed by Ace Peterlin's successful 2-point conversion. Sears later added two more 1-yard touchdown runs, including the final score that sealed the game with just 1:36 left on the clock.
Kenston fought hard, with kicker Grady Kucharson nailing a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter. Freshman Ethan Burge also contributed with a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, briefly narrowing the gap to 17-10.
However, Lake Catholic's offense proved too strong. Ace Peterlin caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Frankie Trinetti late in the third quarter, extending the Cougars' lead. Harley Forkins also played a crucial role, successfully kicking two field goals for Lake Catholic.
Despite Kenston's efforts to stay in the game, including another field goal that brought the score to 27-20, the Cougars' final touchdown drive put the match out of reach.
The game was marked by back-and-forth action, with both teams showing determination and skill. Lake Catholic's ability to respond to Kenston's scoring drives ultimately made the difference in this high-scoring affair.
Looking ahead, the undefeated Cougars will face their next challenge on the road. They're set to travel to North Royalton next week for a highly anticipated matchup against Holy Name.
