āļø Lake County Executive Airport Begins Major Terminal and Runway Projects

Courtesy: News-Herald - Lake County Executive Airport Terminal Rendering
Significant developments are underway at the Lake County Executive Airport, as multiple projects are moving forward. The facilityās manager, Patty Fulop, recently informed the Lake Development Authority (LDA) board that progress is being made, with a new terminal building and other improvements starting to take shape.
A major milestone was reached when a federal grant was approved in August, funding a substantial portion of the construction for a new 5,225-square-foot terminal building. The funding stems from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, specifically the Airport Terminal Program. The Lake Development Authority had requested $2,665,957 in grant funds for the project, which has a total estimated cost of $3,754,570. While public areas such as restrooms, elevators, lobbies, and waiting rooms will be covered by the grant, other expenses like administration offices and storage areas will be financed by the airport and its sponsors.
In addition to the terminal project, a pre-construction meeting took place recently to discuss runway pavement rehabilitation and a shift in Taxiway A. To minimize disruptions, the runway closed for about 45 days starting on September 16, accommodating both projects simultaneously.
A study conducted by the LDA, in partnership with Lake County, confirmed the need for a modern terminal. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is required to allocate $5 billion over five years to enhance terminal buildings across the United States, with $1 billion awarded annually. Of this, $100 million each year is dedicated to general aviation airports like Lake County Executive Airport, which serves as a reliever airport for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
Located in Willoughby, the Lake County Executive Airport is one of the publicly-owned airports in Ohio and plays a crucial role in supporting aviation infrastructure in the state.

ā¾ Guardians Just One Win Away from AL Central Title After Beating Cardinals 5-1
The Cleveland Guardians took another step toward clinching the AL Central title with a 5-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Their magic number is now down to one, meaning they can secure the division with either a win on Saturday or a loss by the Kansas City Royals to the San Francisco Giants.
Leading the way for the Guardians was JosĆ© RamĆrez, who delivered a stellar performance with three hits, including his 36th home run of the season. RamĆrez also drove in two runs and swiped his 40th base, highlighting his all-around contribution to the team's success.
Starting pitcher Ben Lively (13-9) was solid on the mound, allowing just one earned run on three hits over five innings. This marked his third consecutive start in which he allowed fewer than two runs. Reliever Erik Sabrowski stepped up to record the first save of his professional career, giving up only two hits over 2 1/3 innings.
Adding to Cleveland's offense, AndrƩs GimƩnez and Lane Thomas both hit solo home runs. For Thomas, who started his career with St. Louis, it was a meaningful moment as he notched his first homer at Busch Stadium since 2020.
Cardinals pitcher Kyle Gibson (8-8) struggled, giving up four runs (three earned) over six innings, and allowed multiple home runs for just the fifth time this season. The Cardinals managed to score their lone run in the fourth inning when Lars Nootbaar drove in a run with a popup double. Thomas Saggese, making his first career start at third base, had two hits but committed a throwing error in the fourth inning, leading to a Guardians run.
In terms of injuries, the Cardinals are still considering how they will handle their pitching rotation for the remainder of the season. For the Guardians, outfielder Steven Kwan is expected to return from the injured list soon, and pitcher Alex Cobb is working on building up his pitching volume as he recovers from a blister issue.
The Guardians can seal the AL Central title with a win on Saturday or if Kansas City loses to San Francisco.

š Cardinalsā Late Defensive Stand Secures 35-27 Win Over Cleveland Heights

Cleveland Heights star running back Marquise Brown was a force to be reckoned with, running through the Mentor defense for most of the night. But when the Mentor Cardinals needed a crucial stop, they stepped up and delivered.
Despite Brownās impressive 327-yard rushing performance, the Tigers found themselves trailing the Cardinals 35-27 with just under six minutes remaining. Facing a pivotal fourth-and-6 at Mentorās 48-yard line, Cleveland Heights turned to Brown again. However, this time the Mentor defense anticipated his move, converging on him for a three-yard gain and forcing a turnover on downs. The crowd at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium erupted in celebration as the Cardinals took over possession.
Mentorās offense then went into clock-management mode, methodically marching down the field. In the end, quarterback Scotty Fox took a knee at the Tigersā 1-yard line, securing an eight-point victory and maintaining Mentorās undefeated streak, pushing their record to 5-0.
The Cardinals, led by Coach Matt Gray, demonstrated their resilience against a tough Cleveland Heights team that had edged them out in a tight 14-13 game last year. Gray acknowledged Brownās talent and the challenges posed by the Tigers but praised his team for their hard-fought performance, particularly in getting the decisive fourth-quarter stop.
Mentorās victory was fueled by a balanced offensive attack. The game saw Cleveland Heights take the initial lead with Brownās 12-yard touchdown on a swing pass from quarterback Justin Godbolt. Mentor responded with a four-yard touchdown run from Jackson Farley and later a 14-yard scoring pass from Fox to Marcus Sierputowski, allowing them to take a 14-13 lead.
By halftime, Mentor extended their lead to 21-13 with a five-yard touchdown pass from Fox to Farley. Cleveland Heights managed to tie the game in the third quarter, but Fox answered back quickly, connecting with Justen Hodge on an electrifying 80-yard touchdown play. Although the Tigers fought back to close the gap to 28-27, Fox added another rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and Mentorās defense took control from there.
Fox had an outstanding night, completing 16 of 23 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns. His top target, Hodge, hauled in seven receptions for 182 yards and a touchdown. Farley also contributed significantly, rushing for 149 yards and scoring both a rushing and a receiving touchdown.
Mentor now shifts its focus to its next game against River Rouge (Mich.) Panthers on September 28 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium, hoping to extend its winning streak.
