✈️ Family Travel Woes: Tips for Handling Delays and Cancellations
Travel delays and cancellations can turn a much-anticipated journey into a stressful experience, especially when you have kids in tow. However, with some preparation and a positive mindset, you can navigate these disruptions smoothly. Here’s how to handle travel hiccups like a pro and keep your family calm and entertained along the way.
Be Prepared with a Backup Plan
One of the most important things you can do is plan for the unexpected. Before your trip, familiarize yourself with your airline or travel company’s policies on delays and cancellations. Sign up for alerts, so you’re informed as soon as changes occur. It’s also wise to have a list of alternative flights or routes in case your original plans fall through. If traveling by car, check ahead for potential construction zones or road closures and map out alternate routes.
Travel insurance can be a lifesaver, especially for costly, long-distance trips. It can cover unexpected expenses like hotel stays, meals, or rebooking fees, giving you peace of mind if things go awry.
Pack an Entertainment Kit for Kids
Long waits can be tough on little ones, but having a dedicated "entertainment kit" can help keep boredom at bay. Pack items like coloring books, crayons, small toys, puzzles, and a tablet loaded with movies or games. Consider downloading new content just before your trip to add an element of surprise.
Snacks are another essential part of your kit. Pack a variety of healthy and fun options like fruit slices, crackers, or granola bars. Having familiar treats can help keep kids content during long waits. Don’t forget to pack comfort items such as a favorite blanket or stuffed animal, as these can provide a sense of security and calm in unfamiliar environments.
Stay Calm and Positive
Children take cues from their parents, so maintaining a calm and positive attitude can go a long way in helping them stay relaxed. Use delays as an opportunity to bond – play games, tell stories, or simply take a walk around the terminal or rest area. If you’re at an airport, many offer play areas, art installations, or exhibits that can provide a welcome distraction.
By staying prepared, packing thoughtfully, and keeping a positive outlook, travel delays and cancellations don’t have to ruin your trip. Instead, they can become an opportunity to make new memories with your family.

On Saturday night, the St. Louis Cardinals overcame the Cleveland Guardians with a final score of 6-5. Iván Herrera and Jordan Walker each hit crucial home runs, driving the Cardinals to victory after the Guardians had already secured the AL Central title earlier that day.
For Cleveland, José Ramírez and Bo Naylor added to the scoreboard with their home runs, marking Cleveland's 12th division title since 1995. Miles Mikolas delivered an impressive performance, pitching six innings and allowing only one run on four hits, earning his first win since July 21. This win improves his record to 9-11.
Ryan Helsley closed the game by pitching a scoreless ninth inning, achieving his 46th save in 50 opportunities, tying him with Emmanuel Clase for the major league lead. On the mound for Cleveland, Matthew Boyd struggled, allowing two runs over four innings before being replaced.
Key moments included Andrés Giménez’s RBI double and Herrera’s fourth home run of the season. Bo Naylor’s 13th homer of the year and Walker’s fifth also played significant roles in the tight contest.
