📰 Mentor to Honor Veterans with Ceremony on November 11

City of Mentor
The City of Mentor will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, November 11, 2024, at precisely 11:11 AM to honor the service and sacrifices of military veterans. This annual event is a chance for the community to come together and recognize the bravery and dedication of those who have served in the armed forces.
Veterans Day has a rich history, originally observed as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the first anniversary of World War I’s end. The observance evolved into Veterans Day in 1954, becoming a national holiday that celebrates all veterans.
This year's ceremony will take place at the Mentor Municipal Cemetery’s memorial promenade, located at 6881 Hopkins Road. The event will feature keynote speaker Cindy Parsons from the Wounded Warrior Project. Cindy's son, Shane, was severely injured in Iraq in 2006, and she became his primary caregiver for a decade, facing the challenges that many families of wounded veterans endure. Her experience inspired her to advocate for support services for other caregivers, and in 2009, she played a significant role in helping the Wounded Warrior Project lobby Congress for the passage of the Caregiver and Veteran Omnibus Health Service Act of 2010.
The public is encouraged to attend, and local veteran groups are warmly invited to participate in this meaningful tribute. Those interested in joining the event can reach out to Kevin Cindric, Recreation Coordinator, at (440) 974-5720 or via email at [email protected] for more information.
For those who cannot attend in person, the ceremony will be recorded and later aired on the Mentor Channel. Should inclement weather occur, the event will be moved indoors to the Mentor Senior Center at 8484 Munson Road.
📰 Pulpo Beer Company Announces Closure of Willoughby Brewery
The Pulpo Beer Company has announced that it will be closing its Willoughby brewery, with its last day of operation set for September 29. This marks the end of a four-year journey for the brewery, which has been a cherished part of the local community.
In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Pulpo Beer Company expressed gratitude to its supporters, acknowledging that the decision to close was not made lightly. The company thanked customers who became like family and appreciated the memories shared over the years. Rising operational costs contributed to the decision to close the location at 3941 Erie St.
The brewery faced challenges earlier this year, including a temporary closure due to a burst water line. Despite these obstacles, Pulpo Beer Company was actively rebranding its related ventures, Hola Tacos and Barroco, and even introduced the Kraken Room, a rooftop cocktail bar, over the summer. Unfortunately, the cocktail bar will also close permanently.
Pulpo Beer Company is part of a family legacy that began 13 years ago when Paola Valbuena’s brother founded Barroco in Lakewood, aiming to introduce Colombian cuisine to the area. In 2019, the family expanded their culinary offerings with Hola Tacos, inspired by Mexican street food. In 2020, they discovered the Erie Street location, which was once an unused brewery, and transformed it into the Pulpo Beer Company.
The brewery is inviting customers to visit one last time and enjoy a final beer this week to support the staff. Those with gift cards can still redeem them at Pulpo Beer Company's Crocker Park taproom.
🍺 16th Annual Cleveland Beer Week Brings Tastings, Cruises, and More
Cleveland Beer Week is back for its 16th annual celebration, running from October 4th to 13th, bringing together local, regional, and national craft beer enthusiasts for a week of tastings, special events, and community fun.

On October 9th, the Off Shore Pour event sets sail on the Lady Caroline for a three-hour cruise on Lake Erie, featuring music, dancing, and beer tastings. Tickets are $55 per person, providing access to 20 beer samples, and must be purchased in advance.
The excitement continues on October 11th with another Neighborhood Crawl, this time in Cleveland Heights along Lee Road. Attendees can sample special beer releases and unique collaboration brews at different stops, with check-in at Boss Dog Brewery. Tickets are $25 per person or $100 for a group of five, with advanced purchase preferred.
For fans of barrel-aged brews, the Barrel Aged Bash 4.0 takes place on October 12th at Butcher and the Brewer. This event will feature ten brewers offering barrel-aged beer and spirits, along with live music from Thor Platter. Tickets are $50 and include ten beer samples and ten paired spirit samples.
Throughout the week, there will be even more beer-themed events happening across town, making it a great time for craft beer enthusiasts.
Cleveland Beer Week, established in 2009, aims to raise awareness and support for the craft beer industry while promoting local bars and restaurants. Over the years, the nonprofit organization has donated more than $215,000 to charities, including the Malone Scholarship Fund. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Cuyahoga County Animal Center and Rec2Connect.

🏈 Mentor Defense Shines in 47-21 Victory Over River Rouge

Mentor High School’s football team capitalized on a dominant defensive performance to secure a 47-21 victory over visiting River Rouge (Mich.) in a Saturday afternoon matchup on Sept. 28 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. The Cardinals’ defense stepped up with five crucial stops, including two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and two turnovers on downs, setting the stage for an offensive showcase.
Every defensive stop led directly to a touchdown for Mentor, turning potential momentum shifts into game-defining moments. The Cardinals wasted no time after their first defensive stand, converting it into a seven-play drive capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Scotty Fox to Dominic Baroni.
Shortly after, Cameron Taylor intercepted a River Rouge pass, and Mentor quickly took advantage. Three plays later, Fox connected with Justen Hodge for a 31-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0. River Rouge managed to score, reducing the deficit to 14-7, but Mentor's defense held firm, stopping the Panthers on downs once more in the second quarter. Fox guided another scoring drive, with Hodge carrying the ball on a jet-sweep for a 20-7 lead.
Mentor’s defense continued to disrupt River Rouge's rhythm, with Gavin Briggs grabbing an interception and setting up the offense at the 10-yard line. Dominic Burns powered in from the 2-yard line, giving Mentor a comfortable 27-7 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Fox threw his third touchdown of the day, hitting Marcus Sierputowski on a 3-yard slant. This score was set up by a River Rouge error on a punt, extending the Cardinals' advantage to 34-7. Despite River Rouge's two quick touchdowns to narrow the gap to 34-21, Mentor’s offense sealed the win with a late score by Burns, who punched it in from the 1-yard line.
With this victory, Mentor improved to 6-0 on the season. Next week Mentor returns to Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) play against Shaker Heights.
⚾ Ramirez Hits 39th Home Run and Double in Guardians' 4-3 Loss to Astros
The Cleveland Guardians' third baseman, Jose Ramirez, is on the brink of achieving one of baseball's rarest feats: a 40/40/40 season. As the Guardians faced off against the Houston Astros on Saturday night, Ramirez's chase for this milestone continued but remained just out of reach.
Currently, Ramirez sits with 39 home runs and 39 doubles, needing just one more in each category to secure his place in history. If successful, he would be only the seventh player to achieve a 40/40 season, and only the second ever to reach 40 home runs, 40 stolen bases, and 40 doubles in a single year, joining Alfonso Soriano, who accomplished this in 2006.
Saturday Night's Game Recap
The Guardians narrowly lost to the Astros, 4-3, in their second-to-last game of the regular season. Ramirez had several key moments during the game. In the bottom of the first inning, he launched his 39th home run, a two-run shot off Astros' pitcher Justin Verlander, putting him one step closer to the 40/40 milestone. Later in the game, in the eighth inning, Ramirez delivered his 39th double, lacing a ball into the right-center gap against Astros closer Ryan Pressly. With this double, Ramirez now needs just one more in each category to make history.
During his final opportunity as the tying run on third base, Ramirez attempted to score on a ground ball by teammate Lane Thomas but was tagged out in a rundown, cutting short a potential game-tying play. The Guardians were unable to capitalize further, and the game ended with Ramirez still chasing his elusive 40/40/40 goal.
Ben Lively's Struggles on the Mound
Starting pitcher Ben Lively had a tough outing for the Guardians, struggling with control and getting little help from his defense. The Astros capitalized with a three-run second inning, which ultimately provided them with a lead they would never relinquish. Lively's struggles were highlighted by an error on a routine ground ball by shortstop Brayan Rocchio, allowing two unearned runs to score. Despite these difficulties, the Guardians managed to keep the game close but couldn't complete the comeback.
