📰 Mentor Increases Yard Waste Limit for Fall Collection

cityofmentor.com

The City of Mentor's Yard Waste Program is in full swing, running from the first full week of April through the second full week of December. This Fall, homeowners can take advantage of an increased yard waste allowance, with the weekly limit rising from 12 to 25 units between October 21 and December 14, 2024. Each unit can be a bag, bundle, or container of yard waste.

Residents are reminded of a few key requirements:

  • Each unit must weigh less than 35 pounds.

  • Branches should be no more than three inches in diameter, cut into 4-foot lengths, and tied into bundles.

  • Only biodegradable paper yard waste bags are permitted; plastic bags will not be accepted.

  • Waste can also be placed in reusable containers up to 32 gallons, with holes drilled near the bottom for drainage. These containers should be left without lids and clearly marked with "YW."

Due to the increased yard waste during the Fall, Waste Management is deploying additional trucks and employees, which means collection times may vary. To avoid missed pickups, residents are encouraged to set out their waste the night before their scheduled collection day.

For more information, visit the Waste Removal and Recycling page or contact the Public Works Department at 440-974-5781. Please note, there was an error in the Mentor Special Edition Newsletter, which incorrectly listed the Fall collection start date as October 1.

🏠 Roofing Warranties Explained: What Homeowners Need to Know

When investing in a new roof, a warranty offers peace of mind, ensuring that your investment is protected against potential issues. But not all roofing warranties are created equal, and understanding what they cover is crucial when making your decision.

Roofing warranties generally come in three main types.

  1. The manufacturer's warranty focuses on defects in the roofing materials, such as faulty shingles or underlayment. These warranties can range from 20 years to a lifetime, but they often cover only the cost of materials, not the labor.

  2. Then there’s the workmanship warranty, which is issued by the contractor and covers the quality of the installation itself. This type of warranty is typically shorter, ranging from 1 to 10 years, and protects against problems that result from improper installation.

  3. Finally, there’s the full-system warranty—the most comprehensive option. This warranty covers both materials and installation, offering the highest level of protection but usually coming with a higher price tag.

When evaluating roofing warranties, the coverage period is one of the most important factors to consider. Warranties can be either prorated or non-prorated. A prorated warranty means the coverage decreases over time, while non-prorated warranties maintain their full value throughout the term. Another key aspect is transferability; if you plan to sell your home, a transferable warranty can be a valuable selling point. However, some warranties require a fee for transferring ownership or limit the number of times it can be transferred.

Exclusions are another critical element to pay attention to. Many warranties won’t cover damage from weather events, improper maintenance, or any alterations made to the roof. Understanding these exclusions can help prevent unpleasant surprises down the road. Additionally, consider the claim process. Make sure it’s straightforward and won’t burden you with excessive paperwork or delays in receiving service.

As for what roofing warranties typically cover, material defects are at the forefront. For instance, if shingles crack, curl, or lose granules prematurely, a manufacturer’s warranty should address these issues. Workmanship warranties, on the other hand, cover errors made during the installation process. Comprehensive warranties may even cover leaks and water damage stemming from defective materials or poor installation, but they usually won’t cover leaks caused by external factors like storms.

By understanding these key elements, you can select a roofing warranty that provides the best protection for your home and ensures a lasting investment.
