🧑‍🚒 Chief Robert Searles Bids Farewell to Mentor Fire Department Following Distinguished Career

The city of Mentor has announced that Fire Chief Robert Searles will officially retire on October 3, 2024, marking the end of his distinguished 37-year career with the Mentor Fire Department. Searles, who began his public safety career as a police officer in 1982, joined Mentor's fire department in 1987 as a part-time firefighter/paramedic before going full-time in 1988. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, ultimately being appointed Fire Chief in 2014.

In addition to his role as Fire Chief, Searles has been an influential figure in fire safety across Lake County. He served as the Lake County Fire Coordinator and President of the Lake County Fire Chiefs' Association, participating in multiple committees and advocating for improvements in fire safety. His efforts to enhance school safety were particularly notable. He successfully lobbied for changes to the state building and fire code, testifying before the Board of Building Standards and serving on the Ohio Attorney General’s School Safety Task Force. He ensured that fire and emergency services played a key role in school safety planning, a move that has influenced training across northeast Ohio.

Under Searles' leadership, the Mentor Fire Department has been a regional leader in incident response and Rescue Task Force training. His work in Incident Command and Hazard Zone Management has also been instrumental in shaping safety protocols in Lake County. Searles has been recognized for his achievements throughout his career, including being named Firefighter of the Year in 2014 and receiving the Pennant of Gratitude in 2021 from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. He was also a key figure in the organization of Lake County’s H1N1 and COVID-19 vaccination clinics, which gained recognition at the national level.

Mentor City Manager and Safety Director Kenneth Filipiak praised Searles, calling him a "consummate public servant" whose leadership will be greatly missed. Deputy Chief Ronald Zak has been appointed as Acting Fire Chief while the city searches for a permanent replacement.

📰 City Clarifies Rules for Political Yard Signs Ahead of Election Season

cityofmentor.com

As election season picks up, the City of Mentor has been fielding numerous questions regarding regulations for political yard signs. According to the City’s sign ordinances, residents are allowed one permanent ground sign per property, which can be displayed year-round. However, during election periods, additional signs are allowed, with a limit based on the number of candidates or issues a voter in the City can vote on.

There are also a few specific rules about the size and placement of yard signs. The maximum size for any yard sign is 15 square feet, and they cannot be illuminated. It is also prohibited to place signs in public areas, such as tree lawns, or within 15 feet of a side lot line. Additionally, commercial properties with existing ground signs cannot display temporary signs.

The City emphasizes that all sign content is protected by the First Amendment, which ensures the right to free speech, even if a message is disagreeable to some. Signs are considered personal property, and tampering with or stealing them is a punishable offense.

As a reminder, residents are encouraged to respect both free speech rights and each other's property during the election season. For any questions about these rules or to report a sign that doesn’t comply with regulations, residents can reach out to the Code Enforcement Department.

📱 Four Michigan Men Arrested After Phone Fraud Scheme Hits Mentor & Mayfield Heights Best Buy Stores

Four Michigan men have been arrested and charged with felonies after attempting a cell phone deception scheme at Best Buy locations in Northeast Ohio. The suspects were found exchanging counterfeit Apple watches and Samsung cellphones for genuine devices, targeting several stores, including those in Mentor and Mayfield Heights.

On September 23, Mentor police were called to investigate suspicious activity at the Best Buy in Mentor. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that the men had been exchanging fake electronics for real ones across multiple locations. In one instance, a suspect purchased a $1,400 phone from the Mayfield Heights Best Buy, only to return it minutes later after swapping out the real device for a fake. He even received a $129 refund for the price difference during the fraudulent exchange.

The investigation revealed that the same individuals likely attempted similar deceptions in both Mayfield Heights and Mentor. Mentor police, in cooperation with other agencies, apprehended all four men involved in the theft scheme. They now face felony charges for unlawful use of telecommunications devices.

🐶 Top 10 Dog Grooming Tips for a Shiny, Healthy Coat

Regular grooming is essential for keeping your dog’s coat shiny, clean, and healthy. Whether you have a short-haired breed or a fluffy, long-haired companion, these grooming tips will help maintain their coat and keep them comfortable year-round.

  1. Brush Regularly
Brushing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your dog’s coat looking great. For short-haired dogs, brushing 1-2 times a week is sufficient, while longer-haired breeds may need daily attention.

  2. Use the Right Tools
Choose the correct brush for your dog’s coat type. Slicker brushes work well for dogs with long hair, while bristle brushes are better for short-haired breeds.

  3. Bathe as Needed
Dogs should be bathed every 4-6 weeks depending on their level and coat type. Use a mild, dog-specific shampoo to avoid irritating their skin and stripping natural oils.

  4. Check for Tangles
Regularly check for tangles or mats, especially in long-haired dogs. Gently work through knots using a detangling spray or conditioner to avoid discomfort.

  5. Trim Excess Hair
Some breeds grow hair around the paws, ears, or eyes, which may need trimming. Be careful when doing this, or consult a professional groomer to prevent accidental injury.

  6. Monitor Skin Health
Keep an eye on your dog’s skin. Redness, dry patches, or flakiness could be signs of allergies, parasites, or other skin conditions, which may require veterinary attention.

  7. Keep Nails Trimmed
Long nails can lead to discomfort and even affect your dog’s gait. Regular nail trims are essential for their overall health, and it's best to trim nails every few weeks.

  8. Clean Ears
Check and clean your dog’s ears to prevent infections. Use a dog-specific ear cleaning solution and a soft cloth or cotton ball—never insert anything into the ear canal.

  9. Brush Teeth
Oral hygiene is part of overall grooming. Regular tooth brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste helps prevent tartar buildup and keeps their breath fresh.

  10. Feed a Healthy Diet
A healthy coat starts from within. Ensure your dog’s diet is balanced and full of nutrients, especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which contribute to shiny, healthy fur.

By following these tips, you’ll not only help your dog look their best but also promote their health and happiness.
