📰 Lake County Secures $2.27 Million in State Grants for Environmental Cleanup
The Lake County Land Bank recently received two state grants for brownfield remediation projects. These grants, totaling nearly $2.27 million, come from Ohio’s Brownfield Remediation Program and Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program.
One of the grants, worth $300,000, will be used to clean up a 20-acre industrial site on Blackbrook Road in Painesville Township. This land, previously part of the oil and gas industry, has environmental risks including storage ponds and above-ground tanks. The cleanup aims to make the area safer for potential economic use while protecting the community's health.
In addition, $1.97 million has been allocated for the demolition of 13 properties throughout Lake County. These include sites in several communities: Concord, Fairport Harbor, Madison Village, Willowick, Mentor, and Painesville. Overall, Lake County has secured $8.07 million in grants over six funding rounds to tackle various remediation projects.

🏘️ September Sees 14-Year Low in U.S. Home Sales Amid High Mortgage Rates

In September, U.S. home sales fell to their slowest annual pace in nearly 14 years, despite a modest easing in mortgage rates and a rise in available properties. Existing home sales dropped 1% from August, hitting an annual rate of 3.84 million — the lowest since October 2010, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This marks the second consecutive monthly decline and was below the 3.9 million rate expected by economists.
Sales declined in the Northeast, South, and Midwest but rose slightly in the West. Overall, sales were down 3.5% compared to last year. Meanwhile, the national median home price increased 3% to $404,500, the 15th month in a row of year-over-year gains. Over the past five years, median home prices have risen 49%, outpacing wage growth, which increased 25%.
The slowdown began in 2022 as mortgage rates climbed from pandemic lows. Last year, existing home sales hit a nearly 30-year low as the 30-year mortgage rate peaked near 8%. Although rates have since eased, potential buyers are hesitant, waiting for further reductions or the upcoming election.
The inventory of unsold homes rose by 1.5% from August and 23% from last year, reaching 1.39 million by the end of September. Homes now take longer to sell, averaging 28 days on the market, compared to 21 days a year ago. Current inventory equates to a 4.3-month supply, still short of the balanced 5- to 6-month level.
Fewer homes are attracting multiple bids, easing pressure on buyers. In September, only 20% of homes sold above their list price, down from 26% a year earlier. First-time buyers continue to struggle, representing just 26% of sales, while cash buyers made up 30%, a slight increase from last year.

🏈 Winston Shines as Browns Notch First Home Victory of the Season

The Cleveland Browns captured their first home and divisional win of the season in Week 8, defeating the Baltimore Ravens 29-24 in a thrilling finish. It marked several firsts for the team: Jameis Winston’s debut as starting quarterback, offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey's first game calling plays, and the team's first 300-yard passing game of the season.
The Browns' offense, led by Winston, surpassed 20 points for the first time this season. Winston threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns, including a game-winning 38-yard pass to Cedric Tillman with under a minute left. Tillman’s catch capped off his breakout performance, finishing with seven receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown.
The defense also played a crucial role, holding firm when it mattered most. After the Browns took the lead late, Baltimore quickly advanced to the Cleveland 24-yard line. The Browns' defense tightened, forcing three consecutive incompletions from Lamar Jackson to seal the victory. Jackson, despite throwing for 263 yards and two touchdowns, was sacked three times, and RB Derrick Henry was limited to 73 rushing yards.
Key performances included WR Jerry Jeudy’s 30-yard catch, TE David Njoku’s 100th career game featuring a spectacular touchdown catch, and Nick Chubb’s milestone, moving into third place for the most rushing yards in Browns history.
In a game that showcased resilience and playmaking, the Browns celebrated their first home win with Huntington Bank Field roaring in approval as the final whistle blew.
