📰 Mentor to Honor Veterans in Ceremony Featuring Advocate for Wounded Warriors

City of Mentor
The City of Mentor will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, November 11, at precisely 11:11 a.m., at the Mentor Municipal Cemetery memorial promenade, located at 6881 Hopkins Road. The observance will pay tribute to all U.S. veterans for their dedication and service to the country, continuing a tradition that began as Armistice Day in 1919 and later evolved into Veterans Day in 1954.
This year’s keynote speaker is Cindy Parsons from the Wounded Warrior Project, who brings personal insight into the sacrifices and challenges faced by military families. Cindy’s son, Shane, suffered severe injuries during combat in Iraq in 2006, prompting her to leave her nursing career to become his full-time caregiver for over a decade. Her experiences fueled her advocacy work, including her support for the Caregiver and Veteran Omnibus Health Service Act of 2010, which expanded resources for caregivers of injured service members.
The ceremony is open to the public, and veterans' groups are encouraged to participate. For those who cannot attend, the event will be recorded and later broadcast on the Mentor Channel. In case of bad weather, the ceremony will move to the Mentor Senior Center at 8484 Munson Road.

🦢 Tundra Swans Begin Annual Migration: Ohioans Encouraged to Watch the Skies

Credit ODNR
Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers in Ohio, take note—tundra swans are migrating south as winter closes in on their Arctic breeding grounds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently posted images of these large, majestic birds in flight, marking the beginning of their annual journey. As northern lakes and rivers begin to freeze, tundra swans make their way southward, flying in pairs or small groups that occasionally form larger flocks during migration stops.
Ohio lies directly within the swans' migratory path, providing locals with an excellent chance to witness their passage between mid-November and December. According to Bird Watcher’s Digest, while it’s rare, some have reported seeing flocks in the thousands. More typically, though, groups of 20 to 50 tundra swans are spotted at a time. Their signature "oo-oo-whoo" calls, often heard before they are seen, make their presence unmistakable—a sound evocative of wild northern landscapes.
Last winter, residents near Ohio’s Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge captured images of these migrating flocks resting in fields and wetlands. These sightings, especially near State Route 2, generated excitement and hundreds of shares on social media. Observers reported seeing the swans in open fields, particularly cornfields, although the birds also forage in wetland areas.
The tundra swans will return northward in the spring, offering another chance for Ohioans to witness these impressive birds.

🐕 Simple Ways to Keep Your Pet Fit and Healthy Through Exercise

Keeping our pets happy and healthy is a priority for every pet owner, and one key aspect of that is making sure they get the right amount of exercise. Just like us, pets need regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight, stimulate their minds, and curb unwanted behaviors. Here are five simple, effective tips to ensure your furry friend gets the exercise they need.
Daily Walks and Playtime: For dogs, a daily walk is essential. It provides physical exercise, mental stimulation, and a chance to explore. For indoor pets like cats, interactive play sessions with toys or laser pointers can help them get moving.
Consider Your Pet’s Breed and Age: Different pets have different exercise needs. High-energy breeds or younger animals may need more active play, while older pets or lower-energy breeds might do well with shorter, gentle activities. Tailoring exercise to your pet’s unique needs is crucial.
Set a Routine: Pets thrive on consistency. Establishing a regular schedule for walks, play sessions, or other activities helps set expectations and keeps exercise part of their daily life. Consistency also strengthens your bond.
Get Creative Indoors: Bad weather doesn’t mean skipping exercise. Indoor games like fetch down a hallway, hide-and-seek, or agility-style obstacle courses using household items can be fun and effective.
Track Progress: Keeping a journal or using an app to track your pet’s exercise helps you stay on top of their activity levels. Regular vet checkups will also help ensure that your pet is maintaining a healthy weight and energy level.
By following these steps, you can be confident that your pet is getting the exercise they need to stay happy, healthy, and well-behaved. A little activity each day goes a long way in boosting their quality of life.
