📰 Mentor High EMT Program Saves Lives: Student Hero Steps Up in Crisis

Yoson Porter

This story just coming to light.. the EMT training program at Mentor High School is yielding incredible results, as demonstrated by the heroic actions of 19-year-old Yoson Porter, a student of the program. Porter’s quick thinking and life-saving skills were put to the test in July when he happened upon the scene of a hit-and-run in Euclid, where motorcyclist Chris Ford was gravely injured.

Porter acted immediately, using items from his car to fashion a makeshift tourniquet that slowed Ford's life-threatening bleeding. Minutes later, Euclid Police Officer Tanner Doenges arrived and applied a second tourniquet, further stabilizing the victim. Ford credits Porter’s training and composure with saving his life, calling him “an angel.”

Porter is one of 16 students enrolled in the EMT program launched at Mentor High School through an $81,000 state grant from the Innovative Workforce Incentive Program (I-WIP). The program aims to combat a national shortage of first responders by preparing young people for careers in public safety.

State leaders, including Lt. Governor Jon Husted, have highlighted the importance of such initiatives, which address critical workforce gaps while offering students a pathway to meaningful careers. Mentor High School’s program equips participants with essential skills, providing hands-on training that prepares them to act decisively in emergencies.

Program instructor Jerry Craddock emphasized the value of the initiative, noting that it not only meets community needs but also positions students like Porter for a promising future in public safety. For Porter, the experience has been transformative, solidifying his desire to pursue a career as a first responder.

Chris Ford’s story underscores the impact of this training, demonstrating how initiatives like Mentor High School’s EMT program can save lives and inspire the next generation of public safety professionals.
