❄️ Spotty Snow Showers Continue, Next Weather System Hits Monday

Snow showers will persist but with reduced coverage and intensity. Travel caution remains crucial as Lake-Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are still active in parts of the region. Temperatures will reach the only the mid-20s on Saturday afternoon and then drop below 20 degrees overnight.

Sunday offers a brief respite from the snow, with only light flurries in the snowbelt and partial clearing farther west. The chill continues, with highs staying in the 20s.

On Monday, a new system may bring snow along and south of US 30, with a few inches possible. Areas farther north may see minimal impacts, but shifts in the storm’s track could change the forecast.

The cold air will persist throughout the week, with highs in the 20s and lows dipping to the teens. Additional snow showers are possible on Wednesday and late Friday.

📰 Scout-Led Effort Introduces Flag Retirement Boxes at Admin Center

LakeCountyOhio.gov

Residents of Painesville, Ohio, now have a convenient and respectful way to retire worn or damaged American flags, thanks to a new community initiative. Flag Retirement Boxes have been installed in the lobby of the Administrative Center at 105 Main St., as part of an Eagle Scout project led by local student Paul Bernardo.

Paul, a 9th grader and member of Scout Troop 165 affiliated with Zion Lutheran Church, spearheaded the project to offer an accessible solution for properly disposing of unserviceable flags. This initiative highlights his dedication to community service and upholds the values of respect and patriotism.

The boxes, designed to follow official flag disposal protocols, provide a simple yet meaningful opportunity for residents to honor their national symbol. By placing the boxes in a central, publicly accessible location, the community is encouraged to participate in maintaining this tradition of respect.

🏀 Cavaliers Crush Mavericks, Extend Dominance Over Western Conference

Evan Mobley powered the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 134-122 win over the short-handed Dallas Mavericks on Friday, marking their ninth straight victory. Mobley tallied 34 points and 10 rebounds as Cleveland improved to 30-4, completing a perfect four-game Western Conference road trip. The Cavaliers also remain unbeaten against Western teams this season at 10-0.

The Mavericks, without Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, struggled despite Quentin Grimes’ 26-point effort and contributions from Jaden Hardy (17) and Klay Thompson (16). Cleveland seized control with a 20-point run early in the game, building a lead that grew to 27 points. Caris LeVert added 17 points off the bench for the Cavaliers.

Key moments included a five-point burst by Cleveland late in the first half, capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from LeVert. The Cavaliers dominated turnover points, outscoring Dallas 18-0 in the first half, while committing only two turnovers during that stretch.

Cleveland next hosts Charlotte on Sunday, while Dallas visits Memphis on Monday.

🏀 Sierputowski Shines, but Mentor Boys Stumble Late in Loss to Heights

Mentor faced a tough challenge in their Greater Cleveland Conference matchup at Cleveland Heights on Jan. 3, falling 78-70 despite a spirited second-half comeback. After losing leading scorer Kobe Frasure-Azzano to an injury in the first half and second-leading scorer Ayo Olulami to fouls in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals (6-2, 2-1 GCC) showed resilience but couldn’t overcome the Tigers’ athleticism.

Cleveland Heights (6-5, 3-1 GCC) built a 14-point halftime lead, powered by 6-foot-7 senior Jayquan Stubbs, who scored a game-high 31 points. Mentor clawed back within two points late in the fourth quarter, led by Marcus Sierputowski’s all-around performance with 20 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and five assists. Peter Kennedy (15 points) and Tony Katava (20 points) also contributed, but Cleveland Heights sealed the game at the free-throw line.

The Tigers benefited from balanced scoring, with Charles Butler, Noah Blue, and Carter Armstrong all reaching double figures. Mentor struggled from beyond the arc (6-of-30) and at the free-throw line (4-of-12), key factors in the loss.

Mentor will look to rebound with upcoming games against Strongsville on Jan. 7 and Brunswick on Jan. 10.
