🦉 Snowy Owls Return to Northeast Ohio After Two-Year Hiatus

After a two-year absence, snowy owls have returned to Northeast Ohio, delighting bird enthusiasts. These majestic Arctic visitors, known for their striking appearance and mysterious allure, have been spotted along the Lake Erie coast in Lake and Ashtabula counties since early December.

In Fairport Harbor, two snowy owls have been seen frequenting fields near Fairport Nursery Road, while workers at industrial docks in Ashtabula Harbor have also reported sightings. During the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count, two snowy owls were observed at Conneaut Harbor’s break wall.

Snowy owls, weighing up to 5 pounds and boasting wingspans of up to 4.5 feet, are breathtaking to witness. Adult males are pure white, while females and juveniles feature black speckling. Despite their cuddly appearance, snowy owls are efficient hunters, capable of taking down rodents and birds with their powerful talons.

Experts note the owls’ winter migrations depend heavily on summer lemming populations in the Arctic. A robust lemming population leads to higher survival rates among juvenile snowy owls, resulting in more of the birds traveling south during the colder months. This year’s migration, while modest, is an improvement over the previous two winters with no sightings at all.

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of a snowy owl, Fairport Harbor and the surrounding areas offer the best chances. However, experts suggest keeping an eye on other potential sites closer to Cleveland before the birds depart in March. Other sightings this winter have included Pymatuning Reservoir, South Bass Island, and parts of northwest Ohio.

🎣 Lake Erie Fishing Outlook: Strong Perch Numbers, Robust Walleye Population

Recent surveys by the Ohio Division of Wildlife (ODOW) showed below-average walleye hatches but strong yellow perch results in most regions of Lake Erie. Thanks to robust walleye hatches from 2018 to 2023, anglers can still anticipate excellent fishing for years.

Western basin surveys recorded 19 young-of-year walleye per hectare, below the 37-year average of 58. Central basin results showed 7 young walleye per hectare, slightly under the average of 7.6. With walleye maturing in about two years, fishing prospects remain strong.

Yellow perch hatches were above average in the western basin, with a survey index of 673 young perch per hectare, ranking seventh in 37 years. The central zone reported solid results, while the east zone was below average. Despite this variability, anglers enjoyed excellent perch fishing in 2024, with strong opportunities expected in 2025.

Lake Erie’s fish populations are closely monitored, with hatch success influenced by regional weather and spawning conditions. Visit wildohio.gov or download the HuntFish OH app for more information.
