A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for several counties in Northeast Ohio, effective from 4 a.m. Thursday through 4 a.m. Friday. This system will bring widespread snow starting Thursday morning, making travel hazardous due to cold temperatures and accumulating snow. ❄️ Mentor Fire Rescue Warns: No Ice Is Safe This Winter
The city of Mentor, with its abundance of natural and man-made water features—including over 240 ponds, Lake Erie, and the Mentor Lagoons—offers stunning winter scenery. However, this beauty comes with a serious safety warning.
As temperatures drop and ice forms on local water bodies, the Mentor Fire Rescue is issuing an important reminder: no ice is completely safe. A single misstep on unstable or thin ice can quickly turn a peaceful winter outing into a dangerous situation.
Residents are urged to enjoy the winter views from a safe distance and avoid venturing onto ice-covered water unless it has been officially deemed safe, which is rare. The fire rescue team emphasizes the importance of staying vigilant and prioritizing safety during the colder months.

🐕🦺 How Pets Improve Physical and Mental Well-Being in Seniors
Owning a pet brings much more than just companionship and love—it also provides a variety of physical and mental health benefits, especially for older adults. From boosting fitness to relieving loneliness, pets offer unique advantages that can significantly improve well-being.
Studies reveal that pets encourage more exercise, better social connections, and even improved cognitive function for seniors. Pet ownership is linked to reduced blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while also lowering stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. Recognizing these benefits, organizations like Cigna and Nationwide have launched initiatives to promote pet ownership among older Americans.
Here are six ways pets positively impact the health and well-being of seniors:
Feeling Needed and Purposeful
Caring for a pet provides a sense of responsibility and routine, which can help older adults feel needed and add structure to their daily lives. This mutual bond is a proven stress reliever and gives pet owners a renewed sense of purpose.Fostering Social Connections
Pets can act as social bridges, helping their owners connect with others. Walking a dog or discussing pet stories with neighbors is a great way to build relationships, which research shows can boost health and happiness.Easing Loneliness
Many older adults live alone, which can contribute to feelings of isolation. Pets offer constant companionship and emotional support, helping reduce loneliness. Research shows that seniors with pets are significantly less likely to report feeling lonely compared to those without pets.Promoting Mindfulness
Spending time with pets encourages mindfulness—the ability to live in the moment. Whether cuddling or playing, being with a pet can help individuals let go of worries about the past or future, leading to a greater sense of relaxation and presence.Aiding Recovery from Illness
Pets can accelerate recovery after illness or injury by improving mood and providing emotional comfort. Many hospitals and rehabilitation centers recognize the healing power of animals, incorporating pet visitation programs to support recovery.Encouraging Fitness
Dog owners, in particular, are more likely to stay active, as pets require regular exercise. A daily walk—even for just 20 minutes—can significantly improve heart health, reduce stress, and enhance overall fitness levels.
For seniors, pets are more than companions—they are key contributors to a healthier, happier lifestyle. Whether it's a wagging tail or a gentle purr, the love and care of a pet can profoundly improve quality of life.
