🔥 Tragic Fire on Trillium Court: One Pet Saved, Another Lost

Mentor Fire Department

Firefighters responded to a house fire on Trillium Court at 2:14 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, marking their second fire call of the day. The homeowners were not present at the time, and concerned neighbors alerted emergency services after noticing the flames. Before crews arrived, neighbors managed to rescue one of the family's dogs.

Upon arrival, firefighters entered the home and successfully retrieved a second dog, administering life-saving measures before transporting the pet to an emergency veterinary clinic. Fortunately, the dog made a full recovery.

Tragically, the family’s cat did not survive the fire. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

🤼‍♀️ Mentor Girls Wrestling Team Thrives as Sport Gains Popularity

Spectrum News 1

Girls wrestling is on the rise in Ohio, and Mentor High School is embracing the sport’s rapid growth. Since becoming an officially sanctioned varsity sport in the 2022-2023 school year, girls wrestling has seen a surge in participation, giving young athletes new opportunities to compete and build confidence.

Mentor’s girls wrestling program began in 2019, and in just a few years, the sport has expanded significantly both at the school and across the state. Head coach AJ Carl has witnessed this firsthand, noting that the number of female wrestlers in Ohio has skyrocketed from just 200 athletes in 2019 to over 5,000 today.

The team includes athletes like Julia Marshall, who was drawn to wrestling for the physical and mental strength it builds. For senior Dlorrah Harrold, the sport’s rapid growth has been exciting to watch, and she credits wrestling with helping her develop self-confidence and resilience.

Beyond competition, the athletes emphasize the personal growth and empowerment that wrestling provides. They see the sport as more than just wins and losses—it's about self-improvement, perseverance, and breaking barriers.

Coach Carl is committed to fostering an inclusive program, encouraging anyone interested to give wrestling a try. He pushes back against outdated notions that wrestling is only for boys, emphasizing that the sport is for everyone.

With increasing participation and a growing support system, Mentor’s girls wrestling team is helping lead the charge for the sport’s future in Ohio.

🏀 Cavaliers Overwhelmed by Thunder in Lopsided 134-114 Loss

The Cleveland Cavaliers endured a tough night on the road, falling 134-114 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a game that was decided early. After Cleveland’s victory over the Thunder last week, Oklahoma City responded in dominant fashion, handing the Cavs one of their most lopsided losses of the season.

The Cavaliers found themselves overwhelmed from the start, as Oklahoma City jumped out to a commanding 32-14 lead in the first quarter, fueled by a 22-2 scoring run. By halftime, Cleveland trailed 75-49, with turnovers and defensive lapses proving costly. The gap widened in the third quarter, reaching 38 points before the Cavs managed to trim the deficit in the final frame.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the charge for Oklahoma City, scoring 40 points with eight assists and three rebounds. Luguentz Dort added 22 points, knocking down six three-pointers, while Jalen Williams contributed 19 points. The Thunder capitalized on Cleveland’s mistakes, scoring 22 points off turnovers in the first half alone.

Darius Garland paced the Cavaliers with 20 points, but the team struggled offensively. Donovan Mitchell, who had been instrumental in last week's win over OKC, was held to just eight points in limited minutes. Evan Mobley finished with only five points, while Cleveland’s defense had no answers for the Thunder's relentless attack.

Both teams now sit at 34-6, tied for the best record in the NBA. The Cavaliers will look to bounce back when they face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday.
