šŸˆ Buckeyes Defeat Notre Dame to Capture First Title in a Decade

Ohio State won its first national championship in 10 years, defeating Notre Dame 34-23 in the College Football Playoff title game. The Buckeyes built an early lead, but the Irish rallied late before Ohio State secured the win with a key deep pass and a final field goal. The victory was redemption for head coach Ryan Day after a tough loss to Michigan earlier in the season. Quarterback Will Howard led the way with 231 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Quinshon Judkins and Jeremiah Smith played key roles. Notre Dameā€™s Riley Leonard threw for 255 yards and two scores in the loss. The win solidified Ohio Stateā€™s place atop college football and gave the Big Ten consecutive national titles.

šŸ”Œ Common Home Electrical Issues and How to Fix Them

Experiencing electrical issues at home can be daunting, but some common problems have simple solutions. Hereā€™s a look at a few frequent electrical concerns and what you can do before calling a professional.

Light Switch Not Working

If a light switch stops working, start by checking the bulbā€”it may simply need replacing. If the switch feels loose, warm to the touch, or makes buzzing noises, the mechanism could be faulty and should be replaced. Additionally, a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse can prevent a switch from working. Resetting the breaker or replacing the fuse may resolve the issue, but if it keeps happening, a licensed electrician should inspect the wiring for potential short circuits.

Flickering Lights

Flickering lights can signal a bigger electrical problem. First, ensure the bulb is securely screwed in. Older dimmer switches may not be compatible with modern LED bulbs, so check the ratings to confirm they match. Loose or faulty wiring in switches or outlets can also cause flickering, and in some cases, may result in small shocks or sparks. If that happens, replacing the component is necessary, but always turn off the power at the breaker before doing any electrical work.

High Energy Bills

Unexpectedly high electricity bills can result from appliances drawing power even when turned off. Consider using power strips and switching them off when devices arenā€™t in use. Additionally, running dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers only when fully loaded helps reduce energy consumption. Aging appliances, especially refrigerators with worn-out seals, also contribute to energy waste as they require more power to function efficiently.

Power Surges and Brownouts

Both power surges and brownouts can be caused by external factors like lightning or fallen power lines. Investing in surge protectors or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can help safeguard appliances. Internal issues, such as overloaded circuits or faulty wiring, can also trigger these events. To prevent electrical overloads, large appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners should be on separate circuits. If power issues persist, a licensed electrician can assess your homeā€™s wiring condition.

Donā€™t Ignore Electrical Problems

While some electrical issues are easy to fix, they can also be warning signs of more serious problems. Addressing them promptly can prevent safety hazards and potential damage to your home.

šŸ€ Mentor Boys Explosive Third Quarter Fuels 84-66 Victory Over Cornerstone

Mentor's boys basketball team found itself in a tight battle against Cornerstone Christian on Jan. 20, leading by just one point with under a minute left in the first half. Freshman Jack Kennedy provided the spark they needed, scoring a key layup before halftime and sinking back-to-back three-pointers to open the third quarter. That momentum fueled a dominant 32-point third frame, propelling the Cardinals to an 84-66 victory.

Mentor improved to 8-4 on the season, while Cornerstone dropped to 9-6.

The Cardinals started slow, struggling to find a shooting rhythm early. However, they controlled the boards, racking up 50 rebounds, with Kobe Frasure-Azzano leading the way with 13. Ayo Olulami and Peter Kennedy also contributed on the glass, helping Mentor establish a presence inside.

Cornerstone responded well in the second quarter, breaking through Mentorā€™s press with quick ball movement and briefly reclaiming the lead. Quinn Kwasniak was instrumental in that effort, scoring 17 first-half points, including four three-pointers. However, Mentor's fast-paced third quarter proved too much to handle.

Jack Kennedy finished with 13 points, while Tony Katava led the Cardinals with 16, including eight from the free-throw line. Olulami also reached double figures, and in total, 13 different Cardinals scored. Mentorā€™s deep roster and ability to balance inside play with perimeter shooting made a significant impact.

The Cardinals knocked down 10 three-pointers, with seven different players connecting from beyond the arc. Despite that success, Coach Bob Krizancic emphasized the need for continued improvement from long range, especially with key conference rematches ahead.

Cornerstone faced foul trouble throughout the game, with multiple players picking up early fouls. Kwasniak and Carter Sims both fouled out in the third quarter, limiting the Patriotsā€™ ability to stay competitive down the stretch. Kwasniak finished with 17 points, all in the first half, while Hudson Funk added 16 and Asiah West chipped in 14.

Looking ahead, Cornerstone will try to end its two-game losing streak with a matchup against Dalton on Jan. 25. Mentor returns to Greater Cleveland Conference play on Jan. 24 when it hosts Euclid.

šŸ€ Mentor Girls Basketball Overpowers Cornerstone Christian in Blowout Win

Mentor Girls Basketball Dominates Cornerstone Christian with 40-7 Run After nine days of intense practices, the Mentor girls basketball team proved their preparation paid off with a dominant performance on Jan. 20. Following a brief second-quarter deficit, the Cardinals erupted on a 40-7 scoring surge to secure a commanding 53-24 victory over visiting Cornerstone Christian.

The game featured several momentum swings early on. Mentor jumped to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter, but Cornerstone responded with an 11-0 run to go ahead 17-16. However, that was the Patriots' final highlight as Mentor completely took over. The Cardinals outscored their opponents 18-2 in the third quarter, effectively sealing the game before the final frame.

Nina Rodriguez led the charge with 17 points, including eight in the decisive third quarter. Alex Ferritto and Sophie Stouffer contributed nine points each, while Hailey Wilson and Addi Keeper added five apiece. In total, ten Cardinals found their way onto the scoreboard.

For Cornerstone, Hope Murphy led with eight points, while Dā€™Asia Davis and Maya Taylor each chipped in four. The Patriots struggled to match Mentorā€™s relentless pace and pressure, ultimately falling out of contention in the second half.

With this emphatic victory, Mentor showcased its depth, conditioning, and ability to capitalize on defensive intensity. The team looks to carry this momentum forward as the season continues.
