๐ฐ Extreme Cold Shuts Down Hundreds of Northeast Ohio Schools
For the second consecutive day, hundreds of school districts across Northeast Ohio have canceled classes due to dangerously low temperatures. With closures affecting over 300 schools, including Mentor public schools, students are experiencing an extended break following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The region is currently facing some of the coldest temperatures seen in years, prompting officials to prioritize safety. The frigid conditions have made travel difficult and increased concerns about frostbite and hypothermia. Schools will continue to monitor weather conditions before making decisions about reopening.

Located at 8484 Munson Road, the center will provide a warm, safe space for residents in need of relief from the freezing temperatures. Those seeking more information can contact the Senior Center at (440) 974-5725 or email [email protected].
๐ฟ Aqua Ohio Shares Winter Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes
As temperatures drop, Aqua Ohio is urging customers to take precautions to prevent frozen pipes in their homes. The company recommends several proactive steps to avoid costly damage during extreme cold.
Homeowners should first locate and clearly mark their master water valve, ensuring everyone in the household knows how to turn off the water in case of a pipe burst. Outdoor meter pits should also be checked for missing or broken lids. To reduce drafts in unheated areas like basements and crawl spaces, residents should replace broken windows and seal gaps.
Aqua Ohio suggests keeping essential supplies on hand, including heat tape, pipe insulation, space heaters, and hairdryers. Pipes in unheated areas should be wrapped with insulation or heat tape, and indoor water meters can be covered with blankets for added protection.
For plumbing on exterior walls, such as under kitchen sinks, heat tape is recommended, along with leaving cabinet doors open to allow warm air circulation. If temperatures drop below 10ยฐF, allowing a small stream of water to run from the farthest tap can help prevent freezing, which is more cost-effective than repairing burst pipes.
If pipes do freeze, using a hairdryer or heat tape can help thaw them safely. However, open flames or heat guns should never be used.
For more information on winter pipe protection, residents can visit www.AquaAmerica.com.

๐ฅ Stay Strong Against Winter Bugs: Nutrition, Exercise, and Hygiene Tips
Winter brings chilly temperatures and shorter days, but it also increases the risk of colds, flu, and other seasonal illnesses. Taking proactive steps to protect your health can help you stay strong and avoid getting sick. Hereโs how to keep your immune system in top shape during the colder months.
How Winter Affects Your Health
Cold weather, shorter daylight hours, and dry indoor air can weaken your immune system, making it easier for viruses to spread. Flu season peaks during winter, along with common colds and respiratory infections.
Nutrition for a Strong Immune System
Eating the right foods can help strengthen your immunity. Key nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and zinc are essential for fighting off infections. Include immune-boosting foods such as:
Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruits)
Leafy greens (spinach, kale)
Nuts and seeds (almonds, sunflower seeds)
Yogurt and probiotics to support gut health
The Importance of Hydration and Rest
Even in colder weather, staying hydrated is crucial. Drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and warm soups to keep your body functioning properly. Quality sleep is also essential, as your body repairs and strengthens the immune system while you rest.
Staying Active in the Winter Months
Regular exercise helps boost immunity and improve mood, even in cold weather. If going outside isnโt ideal, try indoor workouts like yoga, dance routines, or home exercise programs to stay active.
Managing Stress for Better Health
Chronic stress can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. Reduce stress through deep breathing, meditation, reading, or relaxing baths to keep your body and mind in balance.
Preventing Illness with Good Hygiene
To avoid catching and spreading germs, follow these simple steps:
Wash hands frequently with soap and water
Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow
Keep frequently-touched surfaces clean
Ensure proper ventilation in your home to reduce indoor air contamination
By following these practical health tips, you can enjoy the winter season while staying strong and illness-free.
