š§ Lake Erie Nearly Frozen Over as Cold Snap Grips Great Lakes
After a stretch of bitterly cold weather, ice has rapidly formed across the Great Lakes, with Lake Erie nearing complete freeze-over. As of January 23, 2025, ice coverage across the Great Lakes had reached nearly 26%, a dramatic increase from last winter's historic low levels.
Lake Erie, the shallowest of the five lakes, saw the most significant ice accumulation, with more than 85% of its surface frozen. The sudden ice surge even trapped a Canadian freighter near Buffalo, requiring assistance from U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers.
This marks a stark contrast to February 2024, when ice coverage hit a record low of just 2.7% due to unseasonably warm winter temperatures. Historically, ice coverage peaks between mid-February and early March, with deeper lakes like Superior and Michigan taking longer to reach their maximum freeze.
While this yearās ice levels are higher than last year, they remain well below the record set in 1979, when the Great Lakes were nearly 95% covered in ice. Individual records vary by lake, with Lake Superior freezing completely only once since 1973, in 1996.
In contrast, some of the lowest ice years were recorded in 2002 and 2012, with coverage dipping as low as 1.9% for Lake Ontario in 2012.
With cold temperatures persisting, ice coverage could continue to expand, potentially impacting winter navigation and weather patterns across the region.
