📰 Ohio Launches Adult Day Services Resource for Seniors and Caregivers

City of Mentor

Older adults in Ohio now have access to a new resource that helps them explore adult day services as a cost-effective alternative to long-term care facilities. The website, AdultDayOhio.org, provides valuable information for caregivers, health care providers, and those seeking services, offering a comprehensive directory of adult day centers across the state.

Adult day services allow older adults to receive support while continuing to live at home, promoting independence and improving quality of life. The website features frequently asked questions, guidance on choosing the right program, and referral assistance for those considering this option.

This initiative is the result of a partnership between the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) and LeadingAge Ohio, both committed to expanding access to affordable care solutions for aging residents.

📰 Laketran’s 50th Anniversary Inspires 2025 Student Art Contest

Laketran

Lake County students have the opportunity to showcase their creativity in Laketran’s annual Design a Bus Wrap student art contest, now open for entries. Middle and high school students from the county, including those enrolled in local schools or homeschooled, are invited to participate.

This year’s theme celebrates Laketran’s 50th Anniversary, and students will design a full bus wrap—essentially a moving billboard—highlighting public transit, Lake County, or five decades of service. Participants can include a short slogan as part of their design.

No graphic design experience is required, making this a great opportunity for all artistic skill levels. Entries must be submitted individually by Friday, March 7, 2025, by 5:00 p.m. Submissions can be made online, by mail, or in person at Laketran’s office. Full contest details and entry forms are available on Laketran’s website.

🐶 Lake County Dog Owners Urged to Renew Licenses Before Fees Double

Lake County dog owners can now purchase their 2024 dog licenses, available through January 31. Licenses can be conveniently bought online at lakecountyohio.docupet.com.

Beyond serving as identification, dog licenses provide 24/7 protection for pets and help fund essential care—such as food, shelter, and medical attention—for homeless dogs at the Lake County Dog Shelter.

Ohio law requires dog owners to renew licenses annually, and fees double for those who purchase after the January 31 deadline. For more information, visit the website or call 877-239-6072.

🐺 330 animals rescued from a neglected fur farm in Ashtabula County.

Hundreds of animals have been rescued from deplorable conditions at a fur farm in Ashtabula County following the owner's death last month. Over several weeks, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) worked to remove 330 animals from the Grand River Fur Exchange in Hartsgrove Township.

Rescuers found animals confined to cramped wire cages, many covered in layers of waste, fur, and debris. The facility housed a variety of species, including foxes, raccoons, coyotes, dog-wolf hybrids, opossums, and skunks, with little to no protection from the weather.

State records show that authorities had previously removed dangerous wild animals from the property in 2014, and in 2006, a bear from the farm escaped. The recent rescue operation, completed on January 25, ensured that the surviving animals were relocated to wildlife rehabilitation centers and sanctuaries, where they are now recovering.

Animal welfare advocates say the case highlights weaknesses in Ohio's regulations on such facilities. The HSUS is pushing for stronger laws to prevent similar cases of neglect in the future.

Summary:

  • 330 animals rescued from a neglected fur farm in Ashtabula County.

  • Rescue followed the owner’s death last month.

  • Animals found in filthy, cramped cages with no shelter from the elements.

  • Species included foxes, raccoons, coyotes, dog-wolf hybrids, skunks, and opossums.

  • Past incidents: State officials removed dangerous animals in 2014; a bear escaped in 2006.

  • Animals are now recovering at wildlife sanctuaries.

  • Advocates call for stronger regulations to prevent future neglect cases.

🏀 Mitchell Shines as Cavaliers Cruise Past Heat 126-106

The Cleveland Cavaliers cruised past the Miami Heat with a decisive 126-106 victory on Wednesday night, never trailing throughout the game. Donovan Mitchell led the way with 34 points, marking his 14th 30-point game of the season and his fifth in the last seven outings.

Ty Jerome provided a spark off the bench with 20 points, while Evan Mobley contributed a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Georges Niang added 13 points, and Jarrett Allen posted 12 points and 10 rebounds.

For Miami, Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier each scored 22 points, while Bam Adebayo finished with 21. Duncan Robinson chipped in 13 points, but the Heat struggled on the boards, getting outrebounded 47-35.

Cleveland maintained control despite a third-quarter surge from Miami, in which the Heat posted 43 points to cut the deficit to 94-84. However, a quick 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter, capped by a Mitchell three-pointer, extended the Cavs' lead back to 15, sealing the win.

The victory improved Cleveland's record to 29-2 when holding opponents under 116 points and 33-0 when leading after three quarters. It also marked the Cavs' first wire-to-wire win on the road this season.

Cleveland will return home to face the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday, while Miami begins a four-game road trip on Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.

🏀 Lake Catholic Girls Basketball Secures Conference Victory Over Beaumont

In a key conference matchup, the Lake Catholic Cougars girls basketball team earned a decisive 38-23 victory over the Beaumont Blue Streaks on Wednesday night in Mentor. The win improves the Cougars' overall record to 12-8 and their conference standing to 4-5.

Leading the charge for Lake Catholic was Carmella Sowers, who posted a game-high 19 points. Avery Budrys Rini contributed 13 points to help secure the win. The Cougars' strong defensive effort held Beaumont to just 23 points, controlling the pace throughout the game.

Lake Catholic will look to build on this momentum when they host Elyria Catholic next Wednesday night.
