🎉 End of an Era: Fairport Harbor Mardi Gras Bids Farewell After 85 Years

Fairport Harbor Mardi Gras

Fairport Harbor will say goodbye to a cherished tradition in 2025 as the 85th and final Fairport Mardi Gras takes place on Saturday, July 5. What began in 1939 as a small block festival has grown into a beloved, volunteer-run event spanning generations. However, due to ongoing challenges—including difficulty securing mechanical rides, dwindling volunteer numbers, and logistical hurdles—the organizers have made the tough decision to bring the annual festival to a close.

The one-day farewell event will begin at 5 PM with the annual parade, where children are invited to lead the procession by decorating their bikes. After the parade, the final Fairport Mardi Gras Queen will be crowned at the Lighthouse Amphitheater. Festivities will continue from 6–10 PM, featuring entertainment and food vendors on Lighthouse Hill and the Metroparks roundabout as part of the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse’s 200th anniversary. The night will conclude with a fireworks display at dusk.

A 50/50 raffle will be held, with all proceeds supporting the Fairport High School scholarship program. More details will be announced in the coming months, but organizers encourage the community to come together one last time to celebrate and reflect on 85 years of Mardi Gras memories.

🏀 Mentor Girls Fall Short in Second-Half Comeback Against Medina

The Mentor girls basketball team battled hard but came up short in a 45-36 loss to Medina on Wednesday in a Greater Cleveland Conference showdown. Despite a strong second-half push, the Cardinals couldn't overcome a tough Medina squad on their home court.

Mentor (13-5, 6-3 GCC) struggled offensively in the first half, trailing 22-13 at the break. However, the Cardinals came out strong in the third quarter, going on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to just one. The momentum shift forced Medina to regroup, and they responded with a 9-2 run of their own to regain control.

Senior Keira Coleman led Mentor with eight points, while Nina Rodriguez and Alex Ferritto each contributed six. Sophia Stouffer and Lyla Willis added five apiece, as the Cardinals fought to stay in the game. Rodriguez also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to help keep Medina off the glass.

Heading into the final quarter, Mentor trailed by just three, but Medina's Olivia Klanac (27 points, 9 rebounds) proved to be too much, scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter to help secure the win for the Bees.

Despite the loss, Mentor continues to compete at a high level in the GCC standings, sitting at 6-3 in conference play. The Cardinals will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they aim to finish the season strong.

🏒 Mentor Cardinals Cruise Past Hudson 5-1 in Non-Conference Clash

Mentor Cardinals Dominate Hudson Explorers 5-1 in Non-Conference Victory

The Mentor Cardinals secured a commanding 5-1 win over the Hudson Explorers on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup. The Cardinals took control early, leading 2-1 after the first period and extending their advantage to 3-1 by the second. They sealed the game with two more goals in the final period.

Jack Mackey led the offensive charge with two goals, while Dominic Trem, Ruslan Sherstiuk, and Hayden Vallance each added one. Vallance not only scored the game-winning goal but also contributed an assist in the game. Joe Mackey played a key role as well, assisting on two of the Cardinals' goals.

Goaltender Ryan Wilkinson had an impressive performance, stopping 21 of 22 shots to secure the win. With this victory, Mentor improves to an 18-9-2 record. The Cardinals now prepare for a challenging GCHSHL Red Division matchup against the Rocky River Pirates (15-8-5) this evening at home at 6pm.

🏀 Cavs Crush Hawks, Extend Hot Streak with 137-115 Win

The Cleveland Cavaliers kept their momentum rolling Thursday night, securing a decisive 137-115 win over the Atlanta Hawks at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. After snapping a three-game losing streak earlier in the week, the Cavs avenged another previous loss, this time against Atlanta, which had beaten them twice this season.

The Hawks, missing key players Jalen Johnson and Clint Capela, leaned on Trae Young to carry the offense. However, Young struggled, scoring just 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting while adding 10 assists. He managed only one field goal in the second half as Cleveland’s defense tightened.

Fouling was a first-half issue for the Cavs, who committed 14 personal fouls and sent Atlanta to the line 20 times. However, they cleaned up their defense in the third quarter, limiting the Hawks to just five free throws while outscoring them 39-21.

Cleveland’s All-Star trio of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley combined for 66 points, leading an offense that thrived on ball movement. Seven Cavs players scored in double figures, demonstrating the team's depth despite missing Dean Wade, Caris LeVert, and Isaac Okoro.

The Cavs’ dominant two-way performance solidifies their growing confidence as they continue their homestand against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.
