Camps held at the Mentor Community Recreation Center (MCRC) follow a specific schedule: MCRC members can register starting February 6, while non-members can register starting February 10.

The department offers a diverse selection of camps designed to engage children in physical activities, foster new skills, and promote friendship in a safe, enjoyable environment. Highlights include middle school adventures, preschool play camps, and themed programs like science challenges and theater workshops.

Safety and Quality Standards

Convenient Registration Options
Registration can be completed online, by phone, or in person. If registering online, the city encourages parents to set up their accounts in advance to avoid delays. Registration generally closes one week before each camp begins to allow time for staff preparations.

🚨 Man Sentenced to 24 Years for Role in Fatal Mentor Overdose

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison following a fatal overdose incident in Mentor last year.

Skyler Keaveney-Padamonsky received the sentence on January 24 in Lake County Common Pleas Court after being convicted on multiple charges, including drug trafficking, corrupting another with drugs, possession of criminal tools, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault.

The case stemmed from a 2023 investigation by Mentor Police narcotics detectives after a 24-year-old local man died from an overdose. During Keaveney-Padamonsky’s arrest, he attempted to flee by ramming his vehicle into detectives’ cars, further escalating the charges against him.

💥 SUV Pulled from Icy Pond After Driver Escapes

A driver managed to escape from a sinking SUV after accidentally driving into a pond in Painesville Township, according to officials.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene on Callendar Boulevard to find the vehicle quickly submerging beneath the icy water. The driver was able to break a window and escape before the SUV went under. Authorities reported that the individual sustained only minor injuries.

On Sunday, dive teams from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Mentor Fire Department collaborated with a local towing company to cut through the ice and retrieve the submerged SUV. Officials noted that the water temperature was 33 degrees, with the pond reaching depths of up to 12 feet.

Investigators confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident, though the cause remains under review. Local firefighters have recently emphasized the dangers of icy waters, warning that no ice should be considered completely safe.

🏘️ 15 Silent Signs Your Roof May Be Damaged

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home, but damage can often go unnoticed until it becomes a serious problem. Here are 15 subtle signs that indicate your roof may need repairs.

1. Damaged Plumbing Vent Boots

Cracked plastic bases, broken metal seams, or a deteriorated rubber boot around the pipe can lead to leaks. If the boot is in good condition but nails are missing, replacing them with rubber-washered screws can help secure it.

2. Ceiling Water Stains

Water stains on ceilings or walls often point to a leaking roof. Even small leaks can lead to mold growth, rotted framing, and insulation damage if not addressed promptly.

3. Frosted Nails (Shiners)

If nails in your attic appear white or frosted on cold nights, it could mean moisture is escaping into the attic and condensing on them. When the frost melts, it can drip onto the insulation and cause damage over time.

4. Damaged Shingles

Cracked or missing shingles expose your roof to water infiltration. Replacing damaged shingles quickly can help prevent further deterioration.

5. Clogged or Dirty Soffits

Blocked soffit vents can trap moisture in the attic, leading to mold growth. Keeping them clean helps maintain proper ventilation.

6. Mold Where the Roof Meets the Wall

If water flows down a sidewall due to missing kick-out flashing, it can seep behind trim and cause hidden rot over time.

7. Rusted Gutters

Rust spots or seams that have separated can cause leaks. Applying gutter repair tape after cleaning off rust can help extend their lifespan.

8. Cracked or Broken Roof Vents

Plastic vents can crack, and metal vents may develop broken seams. Instead of using caulk as a temporary fix, replacing damaged vents is the best solution.

9. Loose Step Flashing

Step flashing along walls that intersect the roof can come loose or rust, allowing water to seep into the house. Ensuring flashing is securely in place helps prevent leaks.

10. Mold on Exterior Walls

Mold growth on an exterior wall could indicate a hidden roof leak. Checking the area above for possible entry points can help identify the source.

🏀 Myles Garrett Requests Trade from Browns, Cites Super Bowl Aspirations

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has officially requested a trade, citing his desire to compete for a Super Bowl as the driving force behind his decision. The six-time Pro Bowler, who has spent his entire eight-year career in Cleveland, released a statement expressing his appreciation for the city and its fans but made it clear that his ultimate goal is winning a championship.

Garrett, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, emphasized that his priority is chasing a title rather than individual accolades. He reaffirmed that his ambition goes beyond securing a Hall of Fame legacy—he wants to play on the sport’s biggest stage and hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

The Browns, however, appear unwilling to part ways with their star defender. General manager Andrew Berry recently stated that the organization had no intention of trading Garrett and was instead focused on securing a contract extension. Despite Garrett’s public stance, reports indicate that the Browns remain firm in their decision to keep him in Cleveland.

Garrett, who signed a five-year, $125 million extension in 2020, is coming off another dominant season, recording 14 sacks and a career-high 40 solo tackles. He is also a finalist for the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year award. While his request adds uncertainty to Cleveland’s offseason, the team has yet to signal any willingness to move on from their defensive cornerstone.
