📰 Should the Buckeye Trail Become a National Scenic Trail? Mentor Wants Your Input!

Buckeye Trail - City of Mentor
The City of Mentor is encouraging residents to share their opinions on whether the Buckeye Trail should be designated as a National Scenic Trail. Currently, the National Park Service (NPS) is conducting a feasibility study to assess the trail’s potential for this prestigious designation.
As a proud Buckeye Trail Town, Mentor is part of the Bedford Section, which leads to the trail’s Northeast Terminus at Headlands Beach State Park—home to Ohio’s longest natural beach. The Buckeye Trail, a 1,444-mile loop through Ohio’s diverse landscapes, could gain national recognition if the study determines it meets the necessary criteria.
While public meetings have already taken place, residents still have an opportunity to provide input. Comments will be accepted until February 19, 2025. The city urges community members to review the available presentation materials and submit their feedback to the NPS team.
For more details, residents can access Newsletter, FAQ, the Public Meeting Presentation, and submit your comments here.
Key Dates & How to Participate

Why It Matters
If designated as a National Scenic Trail, the Buckeye Trail could receive increased federal support, enhanced preservation efforts, and greater national recognition—benefiting both local communities and outdoor enthusiasts.

🥚 Egg Shortage Worsens? 100,000 Eggs Stolen from PA Distributor
In a sign of the times, authorities in Pennsylvania are investigating a large-scale egg theft after 100,000 eggs were allegedly stolen from a distribution facility in Franklin County. State police responded to Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Antrim Township on the evening of February 1, where the eggs were reported missing from the back of a distribution trailer. The stolen goods are estimated to be worth $40,000 at retail.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics confirmed their cooperation with law enforcement but declined to provide further details due to the ongoing investigation. As of Tuesday, police had not identified any suspects.
The theft comes at a time when egg prices are climbing nationwide due to bird flu outbreaks that have forced farmers to cull millions of chickens, leading to supply shortages. With demand expected to rise ahead of Easter, some businesses are already adjusting prices. Waffle House, for example, recently announced a 50-cent surcharge per egg to offset increasing costs.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price for a dozen Grade A large eggs in U.S. cities reached $4.15 in December 2024—double the price from two years earlier. While prices remain below the January 2023 peak of $4.82, they could continue to rise in the coming months.

🚶♂️Stay Active: 7 Exercises That Won’t Stress Your Feet and Ankles
If you're recovering from an injury or managing conditions like obesity, avoiding weight-bearing activities is often necessary. However, staying active is still important for overall health. The good news? There are plenty of exercises that provide a great workout without putting stress on your feet and ankles.
Here are seven low-impact activities to keep you moving safely:
Swimming – Water exercises are ideal because they eliminate pressure on your feet while providing resistance for a full-body workout. Try swimming, water aerobics, or even running in water.
Yoga – Many yoga poses can be modified to avoid foot and ankle strain while improving flexibility and balance. A yoga instructor can help tailor poses to your needs.
Cycling – Whether you choose a stationary or traditional bicycle, cycling is a great way to boost cardiovascular health without impacting your feet. Aim for at least 150 minutes per week for optimal benefits.
Range of Motion Exercises – These gentle movements help maintain flexibility, reduce stiffness, and promote mobility—especially useful for those recovering from injuries.
Seated Weightlifting – Using weights or resistance bands while seated strengthens the upper body and contributes to overall fitness.
Isometric Exercises – These involve engaging and contracting muscles without movement. A simple example is tightening and releasing muscles in your thighs or glutes.
Elliptical or Rowing Machine – Both machines provide an effective, low-impact workout while minimizing stress on your lower limbs.
By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you can maintain strength and fitness without risking further injury to your feet and ankles.

🏀 Growing Pains: Young Mentor Squad Falls to Veteran Strongsville
The final buzzer at Strongsville High School on Sunday night signaled more than just a 76-53 defeat for the Mentor Cardinals. It marked a moment of transition for a team that had claimed the Greater Cleveland Conference crown for six straight years.
In the fourth quarter, Strongsville's veteran squad pulled away with a decisive 31-14 run, highlighting the challenges facing this year's unusually young Cardinals team. With five freshmen and three sophomores on the varsity roster, Mentor finds itself in a season of development as Brunswick sets the conference pace.
The numbers reveal this season's primary hurdle: 4-for-30 from beyond the arc, part of a season-long shooting challenge that has seen the Cardinals converting less than 25% of their three-point attempts. Yet remarkably, this developing squad had managed to win 11 of 16 games before Sunday's setback.
The contest remained competitive until midway through the third quarter when senior Kobe Frasure-Azzano's fourth foul forced him to the bench, sparking a Strongsville surge that the young Cardinals couldn't contain. Junior Tony Katava's 13 points led Mentor, but it wasn't enough to overcome their cold shooting night.
As Mentor faces upcoming tests against Cleveland Heights on Friday night (2/7) and Brunswick, Mentor’s Coach Krizancic remains focused on his young team's growth and development.
🏀 NDCL Completes Season Sweep of Lake Catholic with Comeback Victory
Toughness and perseverance defined Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s performance on Feb. 4 as the Lions mounted a late-game comeback to defeat rival Lake Catholic, 66-59.
Facing a nine-point deficit in the third quarter, NDCL found its rhythm and clawed back to tie the game in the fourth. Key defensive plays in the final minutes, including a crucial steal and an and-1 finish, sealed the victory.
The win secured a season sweep of Lake Catholic and improved NDCL’s record to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the North Coast Conference, while also snapping a two-game losing streak.
Senior Angelo Tamburrino led the charge with 22 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Junior Luke Keep contributed 12 points, while senior Connor Hernan’s clutch shot tied the game at 45-45 early in the fourth quarter.
Lake Catholic (11-7, 4-4 NCC) started strong behind senior Ace Peterlin’s 12 first-quarter points, helping the Cougars to a 32-28 halftime lead. The Cougars extended their advantage to 39-30 before NDCL’s resilience took over.
After a back-and-forth fourth quarter, NDCL held a slim 61-59 lead in the final minute. A defensive rebound and free throws by junior Mason Pesho extended the lead, and a final steal-and-score sequence from Tamburrino cemented the win.
Lake Catholic, despite the loss, remains competitive, having won five of its last seven games. The Cougars will seek to rebound in upcoming matchups against CVCA and Perry.
