❄️ Advisory Issued: Icy Conditions Could Impact Travel Saturday

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the entire region from Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning. Residents should prepare for possible hazardous conditions as untreated roads and surfaces are expected to become slick during the afternoon and evening hours on today.

Travelers should exercise caution and allow extra time for travel. Icy spots and reduced traction may develop, especially on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads.

🚨 Police Video Reveals Details of Fight Involving Mentor Councilman

Newly released police reports and body camera footage shed light on how Mentor Councilman Scott Marn ended up in a violent altercation outside Buffalo Wild Wings last September. The incident, involving a confrontation over parking lot driving speeds, escalated into a physical fight with 26-year-old Tony Jackson-Davis.

Witnesses claim the fight began when Marn and his wife, Wendy, confronted Jackson-Davis about his driving. According to police records, Wendy admitted that Marn used a racial slur during the argument, which escalated tensions. Body camera footage captured Jackson-Davis shouting at Marn after the fight, saying, “You know what you did. You’re a racist. He spit in my face.”

Marn, however, denies using the slur. “I said, ‘I’m not calling you that, but you’re acting like one,’” Marn told reporters, insisting that he tried to de-escalate the situation before it turned violent.

The altercation ended with Marn on the ground, injured. Jackson-Davis later admitted to punching Marn and was sentenced to 4–6 years for felonious assault.

This incident follows another controversy surrounding Marn. A recent lawsuit accuses him and other Mentor council members of enabling a hostile work environment. The lawsuit also alleges Marn sponsored a themed event called the “Pimps and Hos Poker Run”.

Mentor City officials stated that Marn was not acting in an official capacity during the Buffalo Wild Wings altercation and that the matter would be resolved through the legal system.

“It’s just an unfortunate situation,” Marn said. “I wish it never happened.”

🎉 Score Big with These Easy & Affordable Super Bowl Party Snacks

Photo: foodnetwork.com

For many, the Super Bowl is about more than football—it’s a feast of food, fun, and festivities. From nachos to pizza, the spread at a Super Bowl watch party is almost as important as the game itself. But for college students hosting their first party, it can be a pricey undertaking. According to recent estimates, preparing a Super Bowl menu for 10 guests costs around $139, a sum that could easily rival your coffee budget for the month. Fortunately, there are ways to create a delicious menu without breaking the bank.

Joan Salge Blake, a clinical professor of nutrition at Boston University’s Sargent College, shares her tips for budget-friendly Super Bowl snacks that are also nutritious. Timing is key, she advises—serve the main meal at kickoff instead of halftime, and keep it simple with affordable, wholesome options.

Here are five winning ideas for your Super Bowl menu:

1. Shrimp Cocktail

Think shrimp is only for fancy cocktail parties? Think again. Frozen shrimp is often cheaper than fresh but still packed with nutrients, including heart-healthy Omega-3s. To prepare, defrost pre-cooked shrimp and serve with cocktail sauce. If using raw shrimp, boil them until pink with a bay leaf, peppercorns, and lemon for added flavor. Chill before serving.

2. Veggie Pizza

Instead of ordering expensive delivery, grab a frozen pizza and dress it up. Top it with defrosted roasted peppers and onions from Trader Joe’s or fresh veggies of your choice. For the ambitious cook, whip up a homemade version with whole wheat crust, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and mozzarella for a healthier twist.

3. Salsa-Boosted Guacamole

Avocados are pricey this year, but you can stretch your guacamole by mixing it with salsa. This trick adds flavor while keeping costs down, and it’s an easy way to sneak extra vegetables onto the plate. Look for premade salsa on sale to keep things even more affordable.

4. Turkey Chili

Chili is a hearty, crowd-pleasing dish that can easily be made on a budget. By increasing the amount of beans and using less meat, you can stretch your ingredients while boosting fiber and protein. Salge Blake’s turkey chili recipe combines lean ground turkey, beans, vegetables, and spices for a flavorful, filling meal. Make extra to serve as leftovers the next day.

5. Veggie Platters and Homemade Hummus

Fresh veggie platters can be surprisingly expensive if you’re not careful. Save money by cutting whole carrots instead of buying baby carrots and checking grocery flyers for discounted produce. Pair your veggies with hummus, a fiber-rich and affordable dip you can make at home with chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. For a crunchy side, swap greasy chips for baked pita chips or whole grain options.

Salge Blake’s golden rule for hosting: If most of your menu is healthy, there’s no need to stress over a few indulgent treats. With a little creativity and smart shopping, you can keep your guests well-fed, your wallet intact, and your party a hit.

🏀 Cardinals Spoil Cleveland Heights’ Streak in 67-62 Victory

Mentor's boys basketball team pulled off a 67-62 comeback win over Cleveland Heights on Feb. 7, ending the Tigers’ hopes of sharing the Greater Cleveland Conference title. Jack Kennedy led the Cardinals with 20 points, while Bernard Gnjatic and Dominic Baroni made key plays in the second half to help seal the victory. The win pushes Mentor to 12-5 on the season and eliminates Cleveland Heights (12-9) from title contention, clinching the GCC championship for Brunswick.

The Cardinals dominated early, forcing six turnovers in the first quarter and shooting 4-for-6 from three to take a 22-12 lead. However, they went cold in the second quarter, missing eight straight threes and scoring only 10 points, which allowed Cleveland Heights to close the gap to 32-27 at halftime.

Cleveland Heights surged in the third quarter to take a 43-37 lead before Mentor’s young players took control. Bernard Gnjatic hit a key three-pointer, and Kennedy found Baroni in transition to turn the tide. Mentor ended the quarter on a run, with Gnjatic and Baroni sinking back-to-back threes for a 50-44 lead.

Kobe Frasure-Azzano added 14 points for Mentor, while Baroni contributed 11 and three blocks. Cleveland Heights was led by Carter Armstrong’s double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds).

Mentor hosts Lutheran East on Feb. 11, while Cleveland Heights travels to Euclid on Feb. 14.

🏀 Mentor Girls Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Cleveland Heights

Mentor’s girls basketball team made Senior Night memorable on Feb. 7 with a 53-37 victory over Cleveland Heights. Kayleigh Bittinger led the Cardinals with a career-high 12 points, including four 3-pointers, while fellow senior Sophia Stouffer added 10 points.

The win improved Mentor to 14-6 overall and 7-4 in the Greater Cleveland Conference.

Coach James Hrusovsky started all six seniors—Stouffer, Bittinger, Brooke Meinke, Grace Kiggins, Alex Ferritto, and Hailey Watson—taking a technical foul for having too many players on the floor. Heights converted the free throws to take an early 2-0 lead, but Mentor quickly erased the deficit with a 9-0 run.

Bittinger and Watson hit key 3-pointers in the second quarter, giving the Cardinals a 21-13 lead at halftime. After Heights cut the gap to 28-22 in the third, Mentor went on a decisive 10-0 run, fueled by defensive stops and transition buckets from Nina Rodriguez and Addison Keeper.

Rodriguez finished with eight points, while Watson and Ferritto added seven and six, respectively. Mentor hosts Lakewood on Feb. 12 before opening tournament play against Stow-Munroe Falls on Feb. 19.

🏀 Mitchell, Mobley Lead Cavs Past Wizards in High-Scoring Affair

The Cleveland Cavaliers outlasted the Washington Wizards 134-124 on Friday night, with Donovan Mitchell scoring 33 points and Evan Mobley adding 27. Jordan Poole had a career-high 45 points for Washington, which fell short in its bid for a four-game winning streak. The Cavaliers, despite being short-handed due to a recent trade, secured their sixth win in seven games.
