🚨 Mentor Woman Loses $663K in Crypto Scam as Federal Agents Seek Recovery

Federal investigators are working to recover the life savings of a Mentor woman who was among 33 victims scammed out of millions in a cryptocurrency fraud scheme.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, the woman was targeted in November 2023 after responding to a text from an unknown number. The scammer gained her trust before convincing her to open a cryptocurrency account and transfer funds to a fake investment platform. Promised high returns, she continued investing until she had lost over $663,000. When she could no longer pay, the scammer issued threats against her loved ones.

She reported the fraud in June 2024, leading to an FBI investigation that identified $4.9 million in total losses. Some stolen funds were converted into USDT (a type of cryptocurrency) and transferred to multiple addresses. In November, law enforcement seized over 8.2 million USDT with assistance from Tether Limited, Inc.

On Thursday, federal prosecutors filed a civil complaint to forfeit and return the recovered funds. Officials urge the public to stay alert for financial scams and report suspected fraud by calling 1-833-FRAUD-11.

🛣️ Ohio’s Strangest Landmarks: 9 Must-See Oddities Across the State

Ohio, known as "The Heart of It All," is home to some of the most unique and offbeat landmarks in the country. From massive sculptures to historical oddities, these nine attractions showcase the quirky side of the Buckeye State.

1. Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument – Cleveland

Located in Cleveland’s Public Square, this towering Civil War memorial was designed by Levi T. Scofield and completed in 1894. The monument features a 125-foot column topped by the Goddess of Freedom, along with bronze battle sculptures and a Memorial Room honoring Cuyahoga County veterans.

2. World’s Largest Basket – Dresden

Once the headquarters of the Longaberger Basket Company, this massive picnic basket-shaped building stands as a testament to the area's basket-weaving heritage. Dedicated in 1980 and recognized by Guinness World Records, it remains a must-see roadside attraction.

3. Guardians of Traffic – Cleveland

The Hope Memorial Bridge in Cleveland is guarded by four towering Art Deco sandstone sculptures, each holding a different vehicle, from a covered wagon to a modern truck. Designed in 1932, these figures symbolize the city's transportation history.

4. Leatherlips Statue – Dublin

This striking 12-foot limestone sculpture in Scioto Park honors Wyandot Chief Leatherlips, who was executed in 1810. The detailed artwork, created in 1990, is a tribute to the Native American leader’s legacy.

⚾ Strong Pitching and Veteran Leadership Fuel Mentor’s 2025 Baseball Hopes

The Mentor Cardinals, reigning Greater Cleveland Conference champions, are gearing up for the 2025 baseball season with a solid foundation of experience. With five returning starters and nine letter winners from last year’s 20-5 campaign (8-2 in conference play), the team enters the season with high expectations.

Head coach Jeff Haase is optimistic about the team's defensive strength, depth in the bullpen, and an improved offensive lineup featuring more power than in recent years. However, he acknowledges that younger players will need to step up quickly to provide the necessary depth.

The Cardinals will rely on a talented and experienced pitching staff, led by senior Pete Kennedy (Grove City commit), Jake Gunvalsen (John Carroll commit), Paddy Collins, and Adam Adkins. Offensively, the lineup is anchored by seven seniors, including first baseman Jake McCartney and third baseman Brayden Bortnick, both committed to Tri-C. Other key contributors include catcher Josh Weiland, outfielders Pat Collins, Tyson Cendrowski, and Austin VanHuss, as well as designated hitter Timmy Poszgai (Lakeland commit).

The infield features a mix of senior leadership and junior talent, with Tyler Black at second base and Jack Vanhimbergen at shortstop.

With a mix of experience and young talent, the Cardinals aim to compete in every game and make a deep postseason run. Haase emphasizes the importance of staying consistent, learning from mistakes, and taking the season one game at a time.
