📰 Mentor Voters to Decide on Observation Tower at Lagoons Preserve

City of Mentor

Mentor residents will have the opportunity to vote on Issue 4 in the upcoming May 6, 2025 election, which seeks approval for the construction of an observation tower at the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. Under the city's charter, any capital improvement within the preserve requires voter approval.

The proposed tower would stand 92 feet tall and be located approximately 1,000 feet north of the main trailhead entrance. Designed to provide panoramic views of the marsh, uplands, and Lake Erie, the structure would feature a 25’ x 25’ top deck along with an ADA-accessible elevated platform.

If approved, construction would begin in summer 2025, utilizing $450,000 in grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). However, if voters reject the issue, the project will be indefinitely tabled, and the grant funding will be rescinded.

Residents with questions about the project can contact the Mentor Public Information Office at [email protected]. A sample ballot will be available once released by the Lake County Board of Elections.

🏋️ Fitness Coach Reveals 3 Easy Tips for Quick Weight Loss by Summer

Three Simple Ways to Lose Weight Before Summer

According to fitness coach, Jenna Rizzo, with summer just around the corner, many people are looking for simple ways to shed extra pounds. Rizzo, based in Georgia, shares three easy steps to kickstart weight loss without drastic lifestyle changes: gamifying activity, following the “one-scoop rule,” and prioritizing sleep.

  1. Gamify Your Activity

Rizzo encourages making exercise more engaging by turning it into a personal challenge. Whether it's a daily step goal or 30 minutes of movement, rewarding yourself with small incentives—like a pedicure or relaxing bath—can help maintain motivation. Health experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, such as brisk walking, along with strength training exercises twice a week.

  2. Follow the ‘One-Scoop Rule’

Rather than overhauling your diet all at once, Rizzo suggests a gradual approach by adding a scoop of fruits or vegetables to meals. Over time, this small change can lead to healthier eating habits. The American Heart Association recommends consuming at least four servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables daily for optimal health.

  3. Prioritize Sleep

Getting at least seven hours of sleep each night is essential for weight management. Lack of sleep can disrupt hormones, leading to cravings and mood swings, which may hinder weight loss efforts. Studies show that adequate rest supports the body’s natural fat-burning process, making it a crucial factor in achieving fitness goals.

By incorporating these simple habits, Rizzo believes individuals can see progress without feeling overwhelmed.

🏈 Coach Rodriguez Sees 'Great Future' for WVU's Young Quarterback from Mentor

WVU Athletics Communication

Freshman Quarterback Scott Fox Jr. Impresses Early at WVU

West Virginia University’s quarterback competition is heating up, but one young player is already making an impression. True freshman Scott Fox Jr., an early enrollee from Mentor, Ohio, has caught the attention of head coach Rich Rodriguez despite the primary battle being among veteran players.

While Nicco Marchiol, Jaylen Henderson, and Max Brown are the frontrunners for the starting role, Rodriguez took a moment to highlight Fox’s potential, stating that he has a "great future" at WVU. The dual-threat quarterback had an impressive high school career, throwing for nearly 2,800 yards and 33 touchdowns in his senior season while also adding 329 rushing yards and seven scores.

Fox, a three-star prospect, chose West Virginia over offers from several schools, including Michigan State, Kentucky, and Minnesota. With time to develop behind the more experienced quarterbacks, he could be in line to compete for the starting job in a couple of years.

A scouting report on Fox describes him as a pass-first quarterback with strong awareness. He has a smooth, repeatable throwing motion and demonstrates the ability to evade pressure while keeping his focus downfield. If his development continues on the right track, he could play a significant role in WVU’s future.

🏀 Cavaliers Rally Late to Extend Win Streak to 15 Games

Despite missing key players, the Cleveland Cavaliers once again proved their resilience, overcoming a sluggish start to defeat the Brooklyn Nets 109-104. The win marks their 15th straight victory, as they continue to find ways to close out games strong.

Shorthanded without Donovan Mitchell (groin), De’Andre Hunter (illness), and Ty Jerome (rest), the Cavs struggled early, allowing Brooklyn to build an 18-point lead in the third quarter. However, a near-midcourt buzzer-beater from Craig Porter Jr. cut the deficit to single digits heading into the fourth quarter, setting the stage for another dramatic comeback.

Darius Garland, who had been in a shooting slump, came alive in the final frame, scoring 18 of his 30 points and leading Cleveland’s charge. The Cavs outscored Brooklyn 31-18 in the fourth, using their defense to generate transition opportunities and ultimately secure the win.

Jarrett Allen was a steady force throughout, finishing with 20 points and keeping the team afloat during the early struggles. Head coach Kenny Atkinson credited Allen as the game’s key player.

Cleveland’s recent habit of slow starts followed by dominant finishes has become a pattern. While their ability to fight back is commendable, their inconsistency early in games could be a concern as the postseason approaches. With a grueling schedule ahead, the Cavs will need to find ways to stay focused for a full 48 minutes.

The victory also guarantees the Cavs homecourt advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. Now, they'll aim to continue their winning streak and secure the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, ensuring homecourt advantage throughout the entire postseason.

Next up, Cleveland travels to face the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday before returning home Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Orlando Magic.
