📰 Mentor City Council Meeting Tonight: Public Encouraged to Attend

Mentor City Council

The Mentor City Council will hold its regular meeting tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mentor Municipal Center, located at 8500 Civic Center Boulevard. Meetings are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend.

Mentor has operated under its own Charter since 1962, utilizing a Council-Manager form of government. The seven-member council is elected on a non-partisan basis, with three members serving At-Large and four representing individual Wards. Every two years, the council selects a president from among its members, and they are responsible for appointing a City Manager to oversee daily municipal operations.

For those interested in reviewing the agenda and meeting packets before attending, documents are available online at cityofmentor.com. Councilman Scott Marn has been under pressure by his peers and some in the community to resign.

🧹 Spring Cleanup: Tips to Keep Stormwater and Lake Erie Clean

Spring Cleanup Tips to Protect Local Waterways

As the snow melts and the busy season begins, various types of waste can emerge from sidewalks, driveways, and lawns. Instead of letting rainwater wash debris into storm drains, residents are encouraged to take simple steps to keep runoff clean and protect local waterways.

To prevent pollution:

  • Sweep up leftover salt, dirt, litter, and pet waste, disposing of it properly in the trash.

  • Lightly rake lawns to remove compacted grass and snow mold caused by excess moisture.

  • Consider a soil test before applying fertilizers to avoid overuse and save both time and money. The OSU Cooperative Extension Office offers guidance at lake.osu.edu.

  • Manage yard waste by starting a compost pile with early grass clippings, while leaving later clippings on the lawn as a natural fertilizer.

  • Always pick up pet waste and dispose of it in the trash—never near streams or storm drains—to prevent bacteria and parasites from contaminating local water sources.

Unlike household wastewater, stormwater runoff does not go to a treatment plant. Instead, it flows directly into nearby streams and Lake Erie, untreated. By following these steps, residents can help keep the community’s waterways clean.

This information is provided by the Lake County General Health District.

🚨 Scammers Targeting Seniors in Mentor as Fraud Losses Soar

Scammers Targeting Seniors in Mentor, Costing Billions Nationwide

Reports of scams targeting older adults continue to rise, with Mentor detectives handling two to three cases every week. However, experts warn that these numbers only scratch the surface. According to the Federal Trade Commission, seniors reported losing over $1.9 billion to fraud in 2023, though unreported cases could push the actual losses as high as $61.5 billion.

Scammers have become increasingly bold and sophisticated, often impersonating government officials, bank representatives, or law enforcement officers to gain victims' trust. They typically start with small requests before escalating their demands, using intimidation and urgency to pressure their targets into compliance.

Officials say the best defense is to hang up immediately if something feels suspicious. Common red flags include urgent demands for money, threats of legal action, or promises that seem too good to be true. If unsure, individuals should consult a trusted friend or family member before taking action.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam can contact the Mentor Police Department at 440-255-1234 for assistance.

🚨 Authorities Seek Ohio Fugitive Wanted for Probation Violation

Valerie Wyatt is currently evading authorities, prompting the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force to offer a reward for any information that leads to her capture. Officials believe she frequently visits areas in Lake and Cuyahoga counties.

Anyone with details on her whereabouts can provide tips anonymously by calling 1-866-4WANTED or submitting information through the U.S. Marshals’ website at www.usmarshals.gov.

🛋️ How to Clean Your Couch the Right Way: Tips from Experts

The couch is the centerpiece of relaxation in most homes, serving as a spot for movie nights, family game sessions, and even the occasional snack break. With so much daily use, it's no surprise that crumbs, spills, and pet hair tend to accumulate over time. However, many people don’t know the best way to clean their couch properly.

Cleaning experts recommend regular maintenance, including vacuuming once a month and addressing stains as soon as they appear to prevent them from setting in. A deeper cleaning, either with a portable upholstery cleaner or by hand, should be done at least once or twice a year, depending on usage.

Understanding Your Couch’s Care Label

Before starting any cleaning process, it’s essential to check the couch's care label for proper cleaning instructions:

  • W – Water-based cleaners are safe to use.

  • W/S – Both water- and solvent-based cleaners are acceptable.

  • S – Only solvent-based cleaners should be used.

  • X – Vacuum or brush only; avoid using water or solvents.

How to Deep Clean Fabric and Microfiber Couches

To deep clean a fabric or microfiber couch, start by vacuuming thoroughly, making sure to reach seams, crevices, and beneath the cushions. If available, use a handheld steamer or steam iron to eliminate dust mites and loosen dirt. For stains, apply an enzyme-based cleaner or a mild dish soap solution on water-safe fabrics, while solvent-only fabrics require a dry-cleaning product. High-contact areas like armrests and headrests may need a portable extraction cleaner for a deeper clean. Finally, once the couch is dry, use a fabric sanitizing spray to kill bacteria and remove lingering odors, leaving your furniture fresh and clean.

Eliminating Unwanted Odors

To keep your couch smelling fresh, sprinkle baking soda over the fabric and let it sit before vacuuming, or use a fabric refresher spray designed to eliminate odors instead of masking them.

By following these simple yet effective steps, you can ensure that your couch remains a comfortable and clean spot for relaxation in your home.

⚾ Predicting Cleveland’s Roster Ahead of the 2025 Season

Predicting the Guardians' Opening Day Roster for 2025

With Opening Day approaching, the Cleveland Guardians are finalizing their roster for the start of the 2025 season. While changes are still possible before March 27, here’s a projection of how the team could shape up when they take the field in Kansas City.

Catcher (2): Bo Naylor, Austin Hedges

Naylor is expected to take another step forward in his development, with Hedges returning to provide veteran leadership and defensive stability.

First Base (2): Carlos Santana, Kyle Manzardo

Santana is likely to get most of the starts at first base, while Manzardo could rotate between first and the designated hitter spot.

Second Base (1): Gabriel Arias

Arias has the most experience among the team’s second base options and is out of Minor League options, making him the likely starter. Prospects Juan Brito and Angel Martinez may begin the season in Triple-A to get consistent playing time.

Shortstop (1): Brayan Rocchio

After the Guardians traded Andrés Giménez, Rocchio is set to take over the shortstop role full-time.

Third Base (1): José Ramírez

No surprises here—Ramírez remains a cornerstone of Cleveland’s lineup.

Outfield (4): Steven Kwan, Lane Thomas, Will Brennan, Jhonkensy Noel

Kwan will play left field, Thomas is expected to start in center, and Brennan and Noel will split time in right. Chase DeLauter, one of Cleveland’s top prospects, could join the team later in the season once he recovers from core muscle surgery.

Bench/Utility (2): Tyler Freeman, Daniel Schneemann

Freeman and Schneemann provide valuable versatility, capable of playing multiple infield and outfield positions.

Starting Rotation (5): Tanner Bibee, Luis Ortiz, Gavin Williams, Ben Lively, Triston McKenzie

McKenzie will need to prove he’s back to form after last season’s struggles. Ortiz and Williams are expected to play key roles, while the Guardians have additional depth in the minors with Joey Cantillo, Logan Allen, and others.

Bullpen (8): Emmanuel Clase, Hunter Gaddis, Cade Smith, Tim Herrin, Paul Sewald, Jakob Junis, Andrew Walters, Kolby Allard

Clase remains the Guardians’ dominant closer, while Sewald, Junis, and Smith provide strong late-inning options. Walters impressed late last season, but if he needs extra time to ramp up, other relievers could step in. Left-handed depth is an area to watch, with Erik Sabrowski likely starting the season on the injured list.

As spring training continues, the Guardians will finalize their roster, but this projection offers a strong preview of how the team might line up on Opening Day.
