🎾 Mentor Recreation Center Adding New Basketball Court, Upgrading Tennis Facilities

City of Mentor

The Mentor Community Recreation Center has announced plans to enhance its facility by adding an additional indoor basketball court and making improvements to its tennis area. As part of these updates, Tennis Court 1 will be removed to make space for the new court, with the goal of increasing programming opportunities and maximizing the center’s usability.

The expansion will also bring improvements to the tennis experience, including the installation of a new reflective ceiling liner system. This upgrade is designed to enhance lighting, improve the overall appearance of the space, and minimize acoustical distractions, creating a more comfortable environment for players.

Work on the facility changes will begin on Monday, March 31, 2025, with the removal of Tennis Court 1. Tennis Court 2 will also be temporarily closed during this time and will remain unavailable until the basketball court is completed. Construction on the new court is set to start on Monday, April 7, with an expected completion date of Monday, April 14. The ceiling upgrade for the tennis courts is scheduled for late spring.

For more information, community members can contact Facility Manager Nick Standering at [email protected] or (440) 205-3608 ext. 7901.

🍲 March for Meals Returns to Great Lakes Mall to Support Senior Nutrition

The Lake County Council on Aging will host its annual March for Meals fundraiser on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Great Lakes Mall in Mentor. This event aims to raise awareness and funds for Meals on Wheels, which provides nutritious meals to homebound seniors struggling with food insecurity.

The event kicks off at 8:00 a.m. with registration at the mall’s Food Court, and the walk runs until 10:00 a.m. Funds raised will support five nutrition sites in Lake County that serve Meals on Wheels recipients.

Participants can register as walkers, form teams, purchase t-shirts, and enter a raffle with prizes drawn on March 31. The walker fee is $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, with coffee and light snacks available. Additional raffle prizes will be drawn live on March 29. The Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging is the event’s top sponsor, alongside more than 70 other contributors.

CEO Joe Tomsick emphasized that the event not only raises funds but also brings attention to the daily struggles of senior hunger and isolation in the community. More details and registration can be found at march4meals.org.

📰 Mentor High Seniors Compete in Real-World Money Challenge for Scholarships

Photo: Mentor High School seniors

Mentor High School seniors put their financial skills to the test on March 6 during the Mad City Money scholarship competition, an interactive event designed to prepare students for real-world money management.

The 90-minute simulation required teams to navigate a futuristic "Mad City," where they balanced jobs, income, and expenses while making financial decisions on housing, transportation, food, childcare, and more. Their goal was to maintain an average balance of $100 by the end of the competition, with the top teams earning scholarships.

Up to $5,000 in scholarship funds were available per school, with first-place winners receiving $2,250, second-place teams earning $1,500, and third-place teams securing $1,200. Cardinal Credit Union employees evaluated students’ budgets based on accuracy and financial planning skills.

Joe Glavan, director of workforce development at Mentor Public Schools, highlighted the importance of hands-on financial education, emphasizing that the event equips students with critical money management skills before they enter adulthood.

Mad City Money competitions will continue at several area high schools throughout March and April, culminating in a total of $25,000 in scholarship awards across all five participating schools. Cardinal Credit Union, which has sponsored the program for 15 years, remains committed to financial education in Northeast Ohio.

🦙 Paws-itively Hilarious: Pets Making Headlines Worldwide!

Funny Pet News From Around the Globe

Pets worldwide are providing plenty of laughs, surprises, and even some head-scratching moments this month.

In Australia, a mischievous cockatoo named Percy has been banned from a café after repeatedly stealing packets of sugar. Despite stern warnings, Percy seems unrepentant, now sneaking in disguised with leaves on his head!

Meanwhile, a brave (but overly curious) cat in Japan made headlines after climbing into a vending machine and getting stuck behind the snack shelves. The feline, named Momo, was safely rescued—and yes, the machine still dispenses snacks, fur-free!

In France, a clever dog named Gaston is gaining fame for boarding a public bus daily—all by himself—to visit his favorite bakery. Bus drivers now affectionately greet Gaston with treats, ensuring he arrives on time for his croissant.

A llama named Kevin has caused a sensation in the UK by photobombing tourists' selfies at a local farm. His goofy grin and impeccable timing have turned him into an internet celebrity, sparking a surge in llama-adoption inquiries.

Lastly, in Canada, a parrot named Mango created confusion during a video conference by mimicking his owner’s voice and repeatedly shouting "You're muted!" Mango’s comedic timing ensured the meeting went viral, leaving coworkers amused and slightly embarrassed.

Pets may not rule the world (yet), but they're certainly winning hearts—and laughs—everywhere!

🏀 DeRozan Leads Short-Handed Kings Past Cavs

DeMar DeRozan's 27-point performance powered the Sacramento Kings to a 123-119 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night, marking Cleveland’s third straight loss. Despite missing key players Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine, the Kings secured their second consecutive win after a recent four-game skid.

Sacramento overcame a slow start, rallying from a 13-point deficit with contributions from Malik Monk (20 points) and rookie Devin Carter, who notched a season-high 16 points. A pivotal 7-0 fourth-quarter run, including a game-tying three-pointer from DeRozan and a key steal and dunk from Carter, helped the Kings take control late.

Cleveland’s Evan Mobley delivered an impressive 31-point effort, scoring 22 in the final 15 minutes. He briefly brought the Cavs back from an 11-point deficit, but the late surge wasn’t enough. Donovan Mitchell added 26 points as Cleveland matched its longest losing streak of the season following their recent 16-game winning stretch.

Sacramento looks to keep rolling when they host Chicago on Thursday, while Cleveland will try to snap its slump in Phoenix on Friday.
