✈️ Mentor Man Takes Flight: RJ Serger Lives His Dream as Guest Pilot

Deepwood Foundation

Mentor resident RJ Serger, 36, recently fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a guest pilot through a special program organized by the Deepwood Foundation. Serger, who has developmental disabilities and receives services from the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood, participated in the “Living the Dream with RJ” event on March 23 in Willoughby.

As part of his experience, Serger trained on a flight simulator at Vector Aviation and later joined pilot Bill Martin in a Bonanza G-36 airplane for a ground taxi ride at Lake County Executive Airport. The opportunity was made possible by Deepwood Foundation Program Administrator Tana Habat, who worked with the Martins—Pam, a board member, and Bill, a longtime pilot—to turn Serger’s dream into reality.

The celebration included a limousine arrival, a video screening of his pilot experience, and aviation-themed activities like flight simulators and paper airplane contests.

This event is part of the Foundation’s ongoing “Living the Dream” series, which helps individuals with developmental disabilities experience dream roles.

🏘️ Housing Sector Braces for Impact as Executive Orders Shift Federal Role

In a series of executive actions this month, President Donald Trump introduced sweeping policy changes with the potential to reshape the U.S. housing market. From agency rollbacks to changes in labor and loan forgiveness programs, these moves are expected to impact a wide range of housing stakeholders.

Streamlining the Federal Bureaucracy

On March 14, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at reducing the size of the federal government. The order targets several federal entities for elimination or downsizing, including the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) and the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund).

These cuts could create challenges for homeless assistance programs that rely on federal coordination and for community lenders that finance affordable housing in underserved areas. While critics warn of increased burdens on local governments and nonprofits, proponents argue that reducing federal involvement could empower states to manage resources more efficiently and eliminate bureaucratic redundancies.

Rolling Back Worker Protections for Federal Contractors

Another order signed the same day reversed a previous mandate that raised the minimum wage for federal contractors. The revocation affects workers and contractors tied to housing-related federal projects, particularly in construction and maintenance roles.

Lowering wage requirements may reduce project costs and potentially allow for broader hiring. However, housing advocates caution that lower wages could drive down job quality, reduce retention, and affect project outcomes. Supporters of the rollback say the change will spur job creation and lower federal spending.

Restricting Public Service Loan Forgiveness Access

Earlier in the month, on March 7, the administration also modified the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The changes disqualify employees of organizations that the government deems to have a “substantial illegal purpose,” potentially impacting workers in certain housing-related nonprofits or public agencies.

This shift could discourage professionals from entering or remaining in public service roles within the housing sector, exacerbating staffing shortages in programs serving vulnerable populations. The administration defended the policy as a safeguard to ensure taxpayer funds support only legitimate public interest work.

Looking Ahead

These executive actions underscore a broader realignment of federal priorities in housing and labor. With potential consequences for affordable housing development, homelessness assistance, and the public sector workforce, the changes are expected to reverberate across the industry.

Housing professionals, developers, and policymakers are encouraged to stay vigilant, engage in dialogue, and prepare adaptive strategies as the federal housing landscape continues to evolve.

🏀 Cavs Dominate Jazz Behind Balanced Scoring and Lockdown Defense

The Cleveland Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak in dominant fashion on Sunday, overpowering the Utah Jazz 120-91 in Salt Lake City. Jarrett Allen led the charge with 18 points, while Donovan Mitchell chipped in 16 to help Cleveland regain momentum.

Evan Mobley turned in a strong all-around performance, tallying a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, alongside three blocks. In total, six Cavaliers reached double figures, showcasing a balanced offensive effort.

Utah briefly took the lead midway through the second quarter after overcoming an early deficit. However, Cleveland regained control just before halftime and never looked back. A pull-up jumper from Mitchell with just over two minutes left in the half gave the Cavaliers a lead they would hold the rest of the way.

The turning point came early in the third quarter, when Cleveland shut out the Jazz for more than six minutes while unleashing a 15-0 run. Allen scored the first and last baskets of the surge, extending the lead to 66-45.

Utah struggled to keep up, plagued by 18 turnovers that led to 25 Cleveland points. Kyle Filipowski led the Jazz with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Walker Kessler added 13 boards and three blocks.

Cleveland capitalized on Utah’s defensive lapses in transition, outpacing the Jazz 22-9 in fastbreak points and dominating inside with a 60-30 edge in the paint.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, with Cleveland wrapping up a five-game road trip in Portland.
