đ° Local Hero: Lake County Officer Saves Choking Infant, Will Receive Life Saving Medal
A Lake County corrections officer is being recognized for his swift and heroic actions after saving the life of an infant in a medical emergency earlier this month.
On the morning of March 9, 2025, Correction Officer Wytavious Stanford of the Lake County Sheriffâs Office received a frantic call from a neighbor whose 8-month-old son had stopped breathing and was turning blue. Without hesitation, Stanford ran to the home and immediately took the infant into his arms.
Relying on the CPR training he received during his time at the sheriffâs academy, Stanford first attempted to clear the babyâs airway by turning him upside down. When that method didnât work, he repositioned the child into a recovery position and performed a manual sweep of the baby's mouth. He located an object lodged deep in the infantâs throat and successfully removed it, allowing the baby to begin breathing again.
Stanford later described the moment as surreal, saying that while he had never faced such a crisis before, his training kicked in instinctively and guided him through the lifesaving steps. He has served with the Lake County Sheriffâs Office since 2022.
In recognition of his quick thinking and calm response under pressure, Stanford will be awarded the Life Saving Medal at a ceremony in April. The department praised his professionalism and service, calling his actions a true example of dedication in a time of crisis.

đł Untraceable and Unforgiving: Scammers Exploit Gift Cards in Local Fraud Surge

City of Mentor
Scams targeting seniors are rising rapidly, causing significant emotional and financial harm to local residents. In Mentor, police detectives report receiving two to three scam-related complaints each week, though the true scope of the issue is believed to be much larger. Experts estimate that up to 87% of these incidents go unreported, largely due to the shame and embarrassment many victims feel after being deceived.
Criminals continue to favor gift cards as their primary method for extracting money from victims. These cards are particularly attractive to scammers because they are difficult to trace. Once a cardâs number and PIN are handed over, the funds can be spent immediately, leaving no recourse for the victim to recover their money. Unlike traditional financial transactions via banks or credit cards, gift card purchases offer little to no protection. Officials urge residents to stay vigilant.
No reputable organization, government agency, or utility provider will ever demand payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency. Such requests are strong indicators of fraud.
The best course of action when something feels suspicious is to end the interaction immediately. Residents are encouraged to speak with a trusted family member or contact the Mentor Police Department at 440-255-1234 if they suspect theyâve been targeted.
Authorities stress that gift cards should only be used for their intended purpose: as a thoughtful gift for someone you know â never as a form of payment.

đż Water Pressure Fluctuations Expected as Aqua Begins System Maintenance

City of Mentor
Aqua will began its annual hydrant flushing program on Monday, March 24, 2025, as part of routine maintenance to ensure the continued quality and reliability of the local water system.
While this process wonât disrupt water service, residents may notice brief fluctuations in water pressure or slight discoloration in their tap water. These temporary effects are normal and expected during flushing.
To avoid any inconvenience, customers are encouraged to hold off on doing laundry while flushing is taking place in their area, as discolored water can lead to fabric staining. If tap water appears discolored, running several cold-water faucets simultaneously can help clear the system more quickly. Simply allow the water to run until it returns to normal.
This annual maintenance is essential for maintaining water clarity and system performance throughout the year.

đ° Lake County Emergency Drill Exceeds Expectations at Mentor High

Lake County General Health District
On Friday, the Lake County General Health District led a successful emergency preparedness exercise at Mentor High School, conducting a Point of Dispensing (POD) setup and dispensing drill. The event was a collaborative effort, bringing together key partners including the Mentor Fire Department, Mentor Public Schools, the Lake County Medical Reserve Corps, Lake County Volunteer Network, the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood, the Lake County Council on Aging, Perry High Schoolâs Service Learning program, and the Lakeland Community College EMT Program.
The purpose of the drill was to simulate a scenario in which essential supplies or medications must be rapidly distributed to the public during a health emergency. The team exceeded expectations, serving 125% of the target population in just half the allotted time. In addition to this success, the drill also highlighted areas for improvement, which will be used to refine response strategies moving forward.
This type of preparedness is essential to ensuring Lake County is ready to act swiftly and efficiently in the event of a public health crisis. Organizers expressed gratitude to all participating agencies and volunteers for their dedication and teamwork.

âď¸ Summer-Ready HVAC: 5 Essential Maintenance Tips
Beat the Heat: 5 HVAC Maintenance Tips for Peak Performance
Summer heat can strain your HVAC system. Here are five expert-approved tips to ensure your system runs efficiently and reliably all summer long:
1. Change Your Air Filters
Dirty filters force your HVAC to work harder, increasing energy use and reducing system lifespan. Replace filters monthly during peak use for optimal airflow and efficiency.
2. Clean the Outdoor Condenser Unit
Debris around your outdoor unit restricts airflow, causing overheating. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, and dirt, and gently rinse fins with a garden hose.
3. Inspect Refrigerant Levels
Proper refrigerant levels are vital for efficient cooling. Have a professional technician check levels annually, and address leaks promptly to prevent costly system damage.
4. Check Thermostat Functionality
Ensure your thermostat accurately controls temperature by performing a simple test. Consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat to enhance comfort and save energy.
5. Schedule a Professional Tune-up
Annual maintenance by an HVAC expert helps identify minor issues before they become major problems, saving you money in the long run. Professional inspections include checking belts, lubrication, electrical connections, and overall system efficiency.
Taking these five simple steps now will not only keep your HVAC running smoothly but also improve indoor comfort, reduce energy bills, and extend your systemâs lifespan. Get ahead of the heatâyour comfort and wallet will thank you this summer!

âž Cleveland Guardians Clarify Nolan Jonesâ Role After Trade
The Cleveland Guardians have solidified their plan for newly acquired Nolan Jones, providing clarity after the surprising offseason trade with the Colorado Rockies.
When the trade was first announced, it raised plenty of questions about how Jones would fit into the Guardiansâ existing roster. Now, following recent roster decisions and remarks from team president Chris Antonetti, the teamâs vision for Jones is coming into focus.
Jones is expected to secure a spot on the Opening Day (Thursday March 27) roster, with most of his playing time coming in right field. Heâll primarily be used against right-handed pitchers, maximizing his offensive strengths. Throughout his career, Jones has consistently delivered power from the left side of the plate, maintaining a .266 batting average and an .820 OPS against right-handed pitching.
He will likely form a right field platoon alongside Jhonkensy Noel, creating a power-packedâbut strikeout-proneâduo. This pairing signals a strategic push for more offensive punch from the outfield, even if it comes with some swing-and-miss risk.
While Jones originally came up through Clevelandâs system as a third baseman and has seen time at first base, his defensive versatility appears to be a secondary asset. For now, the Guardians are locking him into a right field role, though his flexibility could be useful in late-game adjustments.
With the lineup shaping up, Cleveland fans can now look forward to seeing how Jones fits into the broader picture once the season begins.
