📰 Riverside High Honors Student Lost in Early Morning Accident

Courtesy; Riverside High School

A tragic crash in Geauga County early Saturday morning claimed the life of 15-year-old Ben Grisard, a sophomore at Riverside High School in Painesville Township.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred just before 1 a.m. when 19-year-old Noah Leininger of Burton lost control of a pickup truck on a sharp curve along Burton Heights Boulevard in Newbury Township. The vehicle struck a tree. Troopers said excessive speed was a factor and none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Two passengers—19-year-old Martin Grisard and 18-year-old Autumn Ellerson—suffered minor injuries. Ben Grisard, Martin’s younger brother, was killed in the crash. Leininger was not injured.

At Riverside High School, grief has settled over the student body and staff. Ben was known as a dedicated member of the marching band, where he played tuba, and a promising athlete on the track team. Teachers and coaches described him as a passionate, loyal, and principled young man.

Grief counseling is available at the school, and several tributes are planned. The Riverside Band Boosters launched a fundraiser in Ben’s name to fund a protective shell for the band bleachers. A banner honoring Ben will also be placed at the stadium—an honor typically reserved for seniors.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Riverside High School Field House.

👮‍♂️ Mentor Police Receive Over $18K in Federal Funding for Traffic Safety Enforcement

The Mentor Police Department has been awarded a federal traffic safety grant totaling $18,626.30 from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. The funding, distributed through the Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will support enhanced enforcement of traffic laws throughout the city.

The grant aims to reduce dangerous driving behaviors by targeting speed violations, distracted driving, and operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI) offenses. These enforcement efforts will contribute to improving overall roadway safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

As part of the initiative, the Mentor Police Department is reminding residents to make safe choices behind the wheel. Drivers are urged to always wear seatbelts, avoid texting while driving, and never drive under the influence. Those planning to drink should arrange for a sober driver or alternative transportation.

🗓️ Mentor City Council Cancels April 1 Meeting Due to No Pending Business

The City of Mentor has announced the cancellation of its upcoming City Council meeting originally scheduled for April 1, 2025. According to Council President Blake, the decision was made due to the absence of any pressing business or legislative items requiring action.

As a result, the regular meeting will not take place. The Council is expected to resume its usual schedule at the next regularly planned session.

Residents are encouraged to check the city’s website for updates and future meeting agendas.

🍠 Raw Dog Food Debate: Homemade vs Store-Bought—Which Is Better for Your Pup?

Photo by Hendo Wang on Unsplash

For dog owners exploring natural diets, raw feeding is increasingly favored for its health benefits over traditional kibble. But once committed, a key question remains: should you prepare raw meals at home or opt for store-bought options?

Homemade Raw: Control and Customization

Preparing your own raw dog food offers complete control over ingredients, making it ideal for pets with sensitivities or health issues. It’s also generally more budget-friendly than pre-packaged options.

But raw feeding is more complex than just serving meat. A balanced diet includes muscle meat, organs, bones, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. One recommended formula includes:

  • 50% muscle meat

  • 10% organ meat

  • 15% raw bone

  • 20% vegetables

  • 5% fruit

  • Essential fatty acids (like coconut or hemp oil)

  • Recreational bones 2–3 times a week

You don’t need to balance every meal—variety over time is what matters. Meals can be made fresh or in batches to freeze. This approach also allows for tailoring diets to specific needs, such as lower protein for senior dogs or adding gut-healing bone broth.

Store-Bought Raw: Convenient and Balanced

If handling raw meat or calculating nutrients isn’t ideal, store-bought raw meals offer convenience. These frozen meals come pre-mixed with the correct ratios—just thaw and serve.

Pre-made options are helpful for dogs with allergies thanks to clear labels and a variety of protein choices, including rabbit or venison.

However, some products use synthetic vitamins, often sourced from countries with lax regulations. Look for foods that rely on whole food ingredients for nutrition, not added chemical supplements.

Also, many store-bought raw foods are treated with High Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) to eliminate bacteria. While it increases safety, HPP can compromise nutritional value and may introduce chemicals from packaging. For dogs with immune issues, lightly cooking raw food at home might be safer.

Cost and Storage Concerns

Store-bought raw food is costly—a 6-pound bag, around $35, may last a large dog just a week. Additionally, improper transport can lead to thawing and refreezing, which risks spoilage. Avoid puffy bags, a sign the product may have gone bad.

Finding the Right Fit

Both homemade and store-bought raw diets offer significant health benefits over kibble. Choosing between them comes down to lifestyle and comfort level. A hybrid approach—mixing store-bought meals with homemade—can offer flexibility, cost savings, and variety.

The bottom line: any amount of raw feeding is better than none. Your dog will benefit from even a few raw meals a week.

🥍 Mentor Girls Lacrosse Falls to Cleveland Heights in Season Opener, 15-6

The Mentor Cardinals girls lacrosse team faced a tough start to their season, falling to the Cleveland Heights Tigers with a final score of 15-6. Despite a determined effort, the Cardinals were unable to keep pace with the Tigers’ high-powered offense.

Mentor saw standout performances from several key players. Ava Lee made her presence felt with two goals on three shots, while Ella Predina matched that effort, also netting two goals from four attempts. Sydney Fink added another goal, leading the team in offensive pressure with six shots on goal.

However, the Tigers' relentless attack proved too strong, overpowering Mentor's defensive line and goaltenders throughout the game. With the loss, the Cardinals begin their season 0-1.

Mentor won’t have to wait long for redemption, as they return to the field today for another home game against Lakewood.
