š° Ohio Moves to Eliminate E-Check Pending EPA Approval
Ohio is one step closer to ending its vehicle emissions testing program, known as E-Check, following the passage of the E-Check Ease Act. With the legislation signed by Governor Mike DeWine, the only remaining hurdle is approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The E-Check program, in place for three decades across seven Northeast Ohio counties, has faced growing criticism for being costly and outdated. The state spends roughly $11 to $12 million annually on the program, which was initially launched to comply with the federal Clean Air Act. With the rise of cleaner vehicles and reduced industrial pollution, lawmakers argue the program is no longer necessary.
Under the new plan, E-Check testing stations would be replaced with an alternative emissions certificate system. Vehicle owners would attest that their cars meet emissions standards in order to comply with both state and federal regulations.
Ohio lawmakers are optimistic about gaining EPA approval, pointing to the stateās current compliance with clean air standards and recent federal deregulation trends.
E-Check is currently required in Cuyahoga, Summit, Geauga, Medina, Lake, Lorain, and Portage counties for vehicles at least four years old, with testing every other year.

ā¾ Cleveland Offense Erupts, Bullpen Survives Late Push From Pirates
Luis Ortizās first start against his former team ended on a high note, as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-7, Friday night at PNC Park.
Ortiz, traded from Pittsburgh in December, gave up a leadoff homer to OāNeil Cruz but recovered quickly. He struck out eight and allowed just one more run over five innings, improving to 2-1 on the season.
Clevelandās bats broke out for a season-high 10 runs and 14 hits. Bo Naylor, previously mired in a slump, led the way with a home run, double, and three RBI. Kyle Manzardo added an RBI double in the third to give the Guardians a 2-1 lead. Pittsburgh tied it briefly in the bottom half, but Cleveland surged ahead again in the fourth on Naylorās two-run double.
JosĆ© RamĆrez added a fifth run in the fifth with a double, steal, and run scored on an infield chopper. A five-run seventh inning, powered by doubles from Jhonkensy Noel, Gabriel Arias, and Steven Kwan, gave the Guardians a commanding 10-2 lead.
Manager Stephen Vogt made lineup changes, sliding RamĆrez to the No. 3 spot and batting Lane Thomas second. The top of the order responded with six hits.
Clevelandās bullpen was tested late as the Pirates scored five runs across the final three innings. Kwan made a crucial throw from left field to cut down a runner at third in the ninth, helping preserve the lead. Emmanuel Clase recorded the final out for his third save.
The Guardians improved to 10-9 and return to action Saturday against the Pirates.

ā¾ Mentor Baseball Moves to 8-1 With Convincing Win Over Cleveland Heights
It was all Cardinals on Friday afternoon as Mentor cruised past Cleveland Heights, 11-2, in a one-sided matchup. The win marked Mentorās fourth straight victory over the Tigers, continuing their recent dominance in the series.
The Cardinals found a rhythm both at the plate and on the mound, with Pat Collins leading the way in both areas. The right-hander delivered five solid innings, allowing just one earned and one unearned run on five hits. It was another strong outing for Collins, who hasnāt surrendered more than one earned run in any of his last four appearances. At the plate, he chipped in with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
Johnny Prentice took over pitching duties for the final two innings, locking things down without allowing a hit or an earned run.
Offensively, Tyson Cendrowski made his mark with a 2-for-3 performance that included his first home run of the season, driving in three runs and crossing the plate twice. Austin Vanhuss also came up big, going 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored.
Mentor now stands at 8-1 on the season, while Cleveland Heights has dropped three straight to fall to 1-3.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to play in front of their home fans. Mentor will host red-hot Lake Catholic at 4:30 p.m. Monday, with the Cougars riding a seven-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Cleveland Heights will look to regroup at noon on Saturday when they welcome Riverside, a team that has increased its scoring output in each of its last three games.
