šŸ“° Lake County Breaks Ground on $205M Public Safety Center

Gilbane Building Co. photo

Lake County has started construction on a $205 million Sheriff’s Office and Public Safety Center in Painesville to replace its outdated and overcrowded jail. The new facility, set to open in summer 2027, will be located just north of the current jail and include over 500 beds across three-and-a-half floors.

Spanning 250,000 square feet, the center is designed to serve the county's needs for the next 40 years. It prioritizes rehabilitation, offering enhanced medical and mental health services, including exam rooms, a pharmacy, and therapy spaces.

Modern security features will include expanded surveillance, video arraignment, and outdoor recreation areas attached to housing units. Advanced technology such as body scanners and secure perimeters aim to improve safety and reduce inmate movement.

The center will also support law enforcement with expanded facilities for evidence storage, SWAT, training, and interviews.

Site preparation involved demolishing nearby structures and extensive excavation. Construction will peak with 250 workers on-site daily, and the project includes heavy machinery and advanced stormwater systems.

šŸ˜€ 5 Everyday Habits to Overcome Anxiety and Burnout

Here are several practical strategies that anyone can start using today to protect, improve and even overcome feelings of anxiety, depression and burnout:

1. Build a Daily Self-Care Routine

  • Prioritize sleep. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality rest each night. Establish a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, and wind down without screens for at least 30 minutes before bed.

  • Move your body. Even 20–30 minutes of brisk walking, stretching or home workouts boosts endorphins and clears mental fog. If cardio feels daunting, start with light yoga or a daily stroll.

  • Nourish your mind and body. Eat regular, balanced meals (lean protein + healthy fats + fiber‐rich carbs) and stay hydrated. Limit caffeine and alcohol, which can exacerbate anxiety and disrupt sleep.

2. Practice Mindfulness and Stress-Reduction Techniques

  • Mindful breathing. Take short ā€œmicro-breaksā€ throughout your day—pause, close your eyes, inhale deeply for 4 counts and exhale for 6. Even 2 minutes can reset your stress response.

  • Prayer and/or Guided meditation or apps. Tools like Headspace, Calm or free YouTube sessions can help you develop a regular meditation habit in just 5–10 minutes a day.

3. Strengthen Social Connections

  • Schedule check-ins. Block out weekly time—virtual or in-person—with a friend or family member. Sharing your feelings helps you feel seen and relieves isolation.

  • Join a group. Look for low-pressure community meetups, book clubs, sports teams or volunteer opportunities. Being part of something bigger fosters purpose and belonging.

4. Set Boundaries—At Work and Home

  • Define ā€œoffā€ time. Turn off work email or notifications after hours. Communicate clear start/stop times to colleagues.

  • Learn to say no. It’s okay to decline extra projects or social commitments when you’re already stretched thin. Guarding your energy is a form of self-respect.

5. Leverage Professional and Digital Supports

  • Therapy and counseling. A licensed therapist can teach you evidence-based techniques (like cognitive behavioral therapy) tailored to your challenges. Many offer sliding-scale fees or virtual sessions.

  • Digital mental-health tools. Platforms such as BetterHelp or Talkspace connect you with counselors online, often more affordably than traditional in-person therapy.

  • Employee assistance programs (EAPs). If your workplace offers an EAP, use it—they typically include confidential counseling and referrals at no cost to you.

By weaving these small but powerful habits into your life—consistently getting enough rest, moving regularly, connecting authentically, setting clear boundaries, and seeking support when needed—you can turn the tide on stress, stave off burnout, and build lasting resilience. Remember: progress may feel slow at first, but every mindful breath, every honest conversation, and every kind choice you make for yourself compounds into stronger mental well-being over time.

⚾ Mentor Cardinals Rally Late to Defeat Kenston 12-5

The Mentor Cardinals boys varsity baseball team secured a commanding 12-5 road victory over the Kenston Bombers on Tuesday, thanks to a late-game offensive surge.

Trailing 5-4 entering the sixth inning, Mentor flipped the script by tallying three runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to pull away for the win. Despite the offensive explosion, the Cardinals relied mostly on base hits, recording just two extra-base knocks — both doubles — by Austin Vanhuss and Jack Vanhimbergen.

Vanhimbergen led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Vanhuss also collected two hits and drove in three runs. Brayden Bortnick matched Vanhimbergen’s production with a 3-for-4 performance and crossed the plate twice. Jake McCartney and Vanhuss also chipped in with two hits each to round out Mentor’s offensive effort.

On the mound, freshman Rylee Bair earned the win after tossing a single inning with a walk and a strikeout. Jacob Gunvelson notched the save, closing the door with two scoreless innings while allowing just one walk and striking out one. Dom Luvison added two scoreless frames, giving up two hits and a walk with a strikeout. Starter Dom Valeri ran into early trouble, allowing five runs (four earned) over two innings, despite striking out two.

With this victory, the Cardinals improve to 9-2 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 5-0. They'll look to keep their momentum going when they return home to face Brunswick (3-5) on Thursday at 5 p.m.

⚾ Lake Catholic Stays Perfect with Comeback Win Over Mayfield

The Lake Catholic Cougars remained perfect on the season, earning a 6-4 road win over the Mayfield Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon. A clutch three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Cougars overcame a mid-game deficit to notch their tenth consecutive victory.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the sixth, Lake Catholic strung together timely hits and capitalized on key opportunities to surge ahead. The offense was powered by three doubles, while consistent contributions at the plate kept pressure on the Wildcats throughout the game.

Patrick Radigan led the way, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Brayden Mann also recorded three hits and scored a run, while Pete Malchesky added two RBIs and crossed the plate once himself.

On the mound, Quinn Stayer picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing four hits with one walk and a strikeout. Josh Howman closed things out for the save, pitching the final 1.1 innings with two walks and one strikeout. Danny Locker handled the middle innings, giving up four runs on three hits over three frames, while walking two and striking out two.

With the win, Lake Catholic improves to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Cougars face a big test today as they travel to take on unbeaten Gilmour Academy (7-0) at 4:30 p.m.

⚾ Guardians Rally to Edge Yankees 3-2, Extend Win Streak to Five

Tanner Bibee overcame a rough start to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night, extending the team’s win streak to five and securing the series.

Bibee gave up a leadoff homer to Ben Rice on his first pitch but settled down to allow just two runs over six innings, improving to 2-2. Despite Aaron Judge going 4-for-4 and raising his league-leading average to .411, New York couldn't maintain its early edge.

The Yankees led 2-0 after five behind starter Will Warren, who allowed just one hit before being pulled in the sixth after giving up two singles. Cleveland’s rally began with an attempted double steal. Steven Kwan sprinted home when a pitch skipped past catcher J.C. Escarra, making it 2-1. Kyle Manzardo followed with an RBI double, and Angel Martinez gave Cleveland the lead with an infield single that slipped past shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Cade Smith closed the ninth with just four pitches to earn his second save in as many nights. Judge also flashed leather with a lunging catch in right to rob Brayan Rocchio in the fifth.

The Guardians improve to 7-1 at home and will go for the sweep Wednesday afternoon, sending Luis Ortiz to the mound against New York’s Carlos Rodón.
