šŸ“° Mentor Alum Breaks Historic Hits Mark, Eyes Even Bigger Legacy

Hal Walker has been a consistent force at the plate from a young age, making his mark at every level of baseball. After helping Mentor reach the state finals in 2019, he continued his success at Hiram College, becoming a four-year starter.

Entering his senior season with 135 hits, Walker shattered Hiram’s all-time record, surpassing the previous mark of 182 hits during a doubleheader against Oberlin. He now stands at 189 career hits with eight games left in the season.

In his career, Walker has started 128 of 131 games, scoring 159 runs with only 59 strikeouts. Despite a challenging season marked by close losses, Walker and his teammates continue to push forward. His teammate Evan Fairbanks also set a new home run record for the Terriers during the same series.

Currently, Hiram holds a 12-18-1 record, and Walker is aiming for the team’s first .500 season since 2005. Hitting .417 this year and ranking 49th nationally, Walker remains determined to leave a lasting legacy, targeting an ambitious milestone of 220 career hits before the season closes.

Walker’s career at Hiram is poised to be remembered for years to come.

šŸ›£ļø Where Legends Played: League Park Preserves Baseball’s Golden Era

OhioMagazine.com

Tucked away at the corner of East 66th Street and Lexington Avenue in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood, League Park remains a historic treasure for sports fans. Once the site of pivotal athletic events during the early 20th century, its legacy continues to draw visitors eager to experience a piece of baseball history.

ā€œPeople familiar with baseball might have heard of League Park, but when they visit, they’re amazed to see it firsthand,ā€ says Bob Zimmer, founder of the Baseball Heritage Museum, now housed in the former League Park team and ticket office built in 1909.

Following a $6.3 million restoration, the field reopened in 2014 with artificial turf but preserved its original configuration and dimensions from its days as the Cleveland Indians’ home field between 1901 and 1932. (The Indians later split their games between League Park and Cleveland Municipal Stadium through the late 1930s and 1940s.) League Park originally opened on May 1, 1891, with legendary pitcher Cy Young taking the mound for the Cleveland Spiders before 9,000 fans.

Today, the Baseball Heritage Museum welcomes visitors year-round, and the field can be reserved through the city of Cleveland. When not in use, guests can roam the outfield like Tris Speaker, pitch from the same rubber as Bob Feller, or step up to the plate where Babe Ruth once smashed 46 of his 714 career home runs.

šŸ›£ļø Tunnels, Taverns, and Legends: Exploring Over-the-Rhine’s Past

OhioMagazine.com

Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, rich with Italianate, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne architecture, has been revitalized into a vibrant district of restaurants, bars, and shops. Known for its German immigrant roots and brewing history, the area once boasted 1,841 drinking establishments within seven square miles by 1890.

American Legacy Tours offers the Queen City Underground Tour, attracting 30,000 visitors annually to explore the historic brewing tunnels beneath the old John Kauffman Brewing Co. Building renovations in the 1990s uncovered the intact, arched lager tunnels, where temperatures stay a steady 58 degrees year-round.

Above ground, landmarks like Wielert’s Beer Gardens — a former political hub nicknamed "Second City Hall" — and the People’s Theatre, where sharpshooter Annie Oakley performed, showcase the neighborhood’s colorful past. St. Francis Seraph Church, dating to 1859, also features a crypt housing Revolutionary War veteran Joel Green, honored with a full ceremonial tribute in 2014.

Over-the-Rhine offers a unique glimpse into Cincinnati’s brewing, political, and cultural heritage, blending preserved history with modern energy.

šŸˆ Cleveland Takes a Low-Risk Shot on Sanders, But Questions Remain

The Cleveland Browns made a bold move by trading up to select Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the NFL Draft—a decision that, on the surface, looks like a smart, low-risk gamble. Sanders' surprising fall made him an attractive option for a team seeking value without major commitment.

General Manager Andrew Berry emphasized that Sanders was undervalued, and that the acquisition cost was minimal. Rather than chasing a quarterback early, Cleveland focused on securing Kenny Pickett via trade and re-signing Joe Flacco, adding Sanders as a developmental piece.

Despite his talent, Sanders enters Cleveland as a project who may not see immediate game action. The Browns' draft strategy overall felt disjointed, ending with seven picks instead of 10 and focusing heavily on quarterbacks and running backs. Strong selections like Quinshon Judkins, Harold Fannin Jr., and Mason Graham were offset by the confusing additions of Dillon Gabriel and Sanders.

While Sanders' traits—accuracy, ball protection, sufficient arm strength—fit Kevin Stefanski’s system, concerns linger over his tendency to take sacks. Still, Sanders has approached the opportunity with professionalism, pledging to earn his place through hard work.

However, Sanders brings national media attention unusual for a fifth-round pick, which could complicate team dynamics. Cleveland, still needing help at wide receiver, safety, and edge rusher, left the draft with more questions than answers.

If Sanders develops into a steal, the Browns will look smart. If not, this will be remembered as part of a chaotic draft weekend when Cleveland needed certainty more than gambles.

⚾ Guardians Fall Short of Sweep as Red Sox Find Their Spark

Jarren Duran delivered a highlight-reel moment by stealing home, helping the Boston Red Sox defeat the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 and earn a split of Saturday’s doubleheader. It was Boston’s first straight steal of home since Jacoby Ellsbury’s in 2009, and Duran’s third such steal in his career.

After tripling in the third inning, Duran broke for home as Cleveland’s Doug Nikhazy, making his major league debut, went into his windup. Sliding headfirst, Duran touched the plate just ahead of Bo Naylor’s tag, and the safe call was confirmed after review. Duran finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Rafael Devers and rookie Kristian Campbell added two hits each to help snap Boston’s three-game losing streak.

The Red Sox quickly built a 6-0 lead as Nikhazy struggled, walking six and giving up six runs across 90 pitches. Rob Refsnyder’s bases-loaded walk in the second inning extended Boston’s early advantage. Walker Buehler earned his third consecutive win, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

For Cleveland, Jhonkensy Noel hit a two-run homer, his first since last year’s ALCS, and Angel MartĆnez added an RBI single and a stolen base. Despite the loss, the Guardians have won six of their last eight games, though they missed a chance at their first doubleheader sweep since 2022. Their record in twin-bills since 2023 now stands at 2-16.

Earlier in the day, the Guardians won the opener 5-4, with Steven Kwan driving in the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Boston's Brayan Bello (1-0, 1.80 ERA) is set to face Cleveland’s Logan Allen (1-1, 2.11 ERA) in Sunday’s series finale.

šŸ€ Cavaliers Crush Heat, Take Commanding 3-0 Series Lead

Despite an off night from Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland sidelined by injury, the Cleveland Cavaliers dominated the Miami Heat 124-87 on Saturday, moving one win away from the second round of the playoffs.

Jarrett Allen scored 22 points, De’Andre Hunter added 21, and the Cavaliers overwhelmed Miami with a 33-5 first-half run, winning the rebounding battle 46-29 and outscoring the Heat 60-30 in the paint. Coach Kenny Atkinson credited the team’s focus on rebounding and strong defensive execution.

Evan Mobley chipped in 19 points, Max Strus added 18, and Ty Jerome delivered 13 points and 11 assists in 22 minutes, posting a plus-33 rating. Mitchell, despite shooting 4-for-14, finished with 13 points, though Cleveland hardly needed his usual production to take control.

Bam Adebayo led Miami with 22 points and Davion Mitchell scored 16, but the Heat struggled from early on. After a fast start, Miami was buried by Cleveland’s explosive 33-5 surge, where the Cavaliers hit 13 of 17 shots, including five straight three-pointers in a two-minute span.

Cleveland led 62-42 at halftime, and even after missing their first eight shots of the second half, Miami couldn’t capitalize. The Cavs stretched the lead to 88-64 by the end of the third, cruising from there to hand Miami its worst playoff loss in franchise history.

Cleveland now holds a 3-0 series lead — a position from which no NBA team has ever lost — and will look to complete the sweep in Game 4 on Monday.
