š£ļø Step Inside Shawshank: A Tour of The Ohio State Reformatory
If you're looking for a day trip with a little history, a touch of movie magic, and a whole lot of charm, Mansfield, Ohio should be at the top of your list. This underrated destination, located in Richland County, offers a mix of unique experiences that make it well worth the short drive from Mentor. Whether youāre a movie buff or a history enthusiast, thereās something for everyone. Here are some of the highlights you wonāt want to miss!
The Ohio State Reformatory: A Film Buffās Dream
One of the most iconic attractions in Mansfield is The Ohio State Reformatory, famously known as the filming location for The Shawshank Redemption. This historic prison, which served as a correctional facility until 1990, is a must-see for anyone who loves the film. The building, rich in history, has maintained much of its original charm, and the crumbling, Gothic architecture makes it the perfect backdrop for the movie that captured the hearts of millions.
During the tour, youāll not only get a look at the prisonās eerie cells but also learn about its fascinating past, from its grand opening in 1896 to its eventual decline. The prisonās role in Shawshank gives the tour an added layer of excitement, as youāll get to stand in the very spots where some of the filmās most famous scenes were shot.
While self-guided tours are available, we highly recommend booking a guided tour for a deeper, more immersive experience. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, providing not only details about the Reformatoryās history but also fun behind-the-scenes movie trivia.
Pro tip: If you're visiting during the summer or winter, make sure to dress in layers. The lack of climate control in the cell blocks means it can get pretty hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter.
Mansfieldās Rich History Awaits
The Ohio State Reformatory is just the beginning of what Mansfield has to offer. Whether you have time to explore one or two sites or spend the whole day discovering new places, Mansfield is full of hidden gems thatāll make for an unforgettable trip.
Stay tuned for more recommendations on things to do in this charming Ohio city in upcoming newsletters. Youāll be surprised by whatās waiting just down the road!
