🦉 Fallen Owlets Rescued in Mentor-on-the-Lake, Headed for Rehabilitation

Baby owls (Credit: Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department)

Two baby screech owls were rescued in Mentor-on-the-Lake on Friday after falling from a tree, thanks to the quick action of a concerned local resident. The incident began when someone spotted the tiny owls on the ground and reached out to local authorities.

Mentor-on-the-Lake Police responded and found the owlets near the tree, with one dangerously hiding beneath a parked vehicle. Officers carefully moved the young birds to a safer location nearby, where they waited for several hours in hopes that the mother owl would return.

When it became clear the mother wasn’t coming back, officials from Lake Metroparks were called in to assist. The baby owls were then transported to Penitentiary Glen, a wildlife facility known for its rehabilitation programs.

Though the owlets showed no visible signs of injury, they were unable to fly, prompting their relocation for specialized care. Authorities are optimistic that the young birds will eventually be strong enough to return to the wild.

🏘️ Ohio AG Approves Petition to Eliminate Property Taxes

The Ohio Attorney General's Office has approved the title and summary of a proposed constitutional amendment that seeks to eliminate property taxes across the state. Submitted on May 1 under the title “Abolishment of Taxes on Real Property,” the proposal has passed an initial legal hurdle, with the AG’s office deeming its language fair and accurate.

The next phase in the amendment process shifts to the Ohio Ballot Board, which will evaluate whether the petition represents a single constitutional change or multiple amendments bundled together. This determination is crucial for deciding how the proposal will proceed.

Should the Ballot Board give its certification, supporters of the initiative will need to gather signatures from Ohio voters. Specifically, the number must total at least 10% of the votes cast in the most recent gubernatorial election. Furthermore, the signatures must come from at least 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties, with each of those counties contributing a minimum equal to 5% of its gubernatorial vote total.

If the required number of verified signatures is submitted at least 65 days before an election, the amendment could appear on the ballot in the next general election occurring more than 125 days after the petition's submission.

This proposal, if ultimately approved by voters, could drastically reshape Ohio’s approach to funding public services and education, which are traditionally supported by property tax revenue.

✈️ Reimagining the USA: 4 Ways to Explore America Anew in 2025

The United States is ever-evolving, and 2025 brings a wealth of new experiences for travelers eager to explore fresh corners of the country. Whether it’s a scenic rail journey, a deep dive into civil rights history, or a roaring return to the Jazz Age, this year's lineup offers something for every kind of adventurer. Here are four standout ways to rediscover America in 2025 — with many more across all 50 states waiting to be explored.

Ride the Revived Gulf Coast Train

After two decades out of service due to Hurricane Katrina, Amtrak’s Gulf Coast train will return in spring 2025. The route connects New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama, winding through Louisiana’s Cajun country and Mississippi’s charming coastal towns. Travelers can expect scenic views, Southern cuisine in the dining car, and easy access to white-sand beaches, seafood spots, and walkable communities along the way.

Explore Pittsburgh’s POP District

Pittsburgh continues to honor its most famous art icon, Andy Warhol, with the final phase of its emerging POP District opening this year. Centered around the Andy Warhol Museum, the six-block district now includes the Factory Creative Arts Center, a 32,000-square-foot hub for performances, exhibitions, and community events, further cementing the city’s artistic revival.

Trace Malcolm X’s Boston Legacy

Boston will begin commemorating Malcolm X’s birthday as an annual holiday starting this May, marking 100 years since the civil rights leader’s birth. Visitors can walk the city’s 1.6-mile Black Heritage Trail in Beacon Hill, visit the Museum of African-American History, and explore Roxbury, where Malcolm X spent formative years — with plans underway to extend the heritage trail there.

Relive Gatsby-Era New York

In celebration of The Great Gatsby’s 100th anniversary, New York is embracing its Jazz Age roots. Visitors can step into speakeasies, stay in a Gatsby-themed suite at The Plaza, or venture to Long Island’s historic mansions like Oheka Castle — believed to have inspired settings in both the novel and its film adaptation — many of which are now open for tours and garden strolls.

These four experiences are just a sampling of 25 new and enriching ways to experience the U.S. in 2025 — offering a dynamic blend of culture, history, and adventure.

⚾ Suárez Shines in Seven-Scoreless as Phillies Top Guardians 7-1

Ranger Suárez bounced back in a big way Saturday, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians with seven shutout innings. After a rough season debut, Suárez looked sharp, mixing his pitches effectively and allowing no runners past second base until the seventh.

He leaned on his fastball for 30% of his pitches, earning eight called strikes, while his curveball and changeup each produced three whiffs. He capped his outing by striking out Kyle Manzardo with a slider to end Cleveland’s only real scoring threat.

The Phillies opened the scoring with an RBI single from Kyle Schwarber, who extended his on-base streak to 45 games — tying the longest in MLB since 2022. Schwarber went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Philadelphia pulled away in the eighth, scoring six runs with two outs. Bryce Harper smashed a two-run homer, followed by a two-run double from Max Kepler as they capitalized on shaky relief pitching from Cleveland.

With Suárez in form and the offense surging, the Phillies head into their upcoming homestand with confidence — and a Zack Wheeler bobblehead night on May 16.

🥍 Lake Catholic Girls Lacrosse Rolls Past Shaker Heights, 17-7

The Lake Catholic Cougars girls lacrosse team delivered a commanding performance on Saturday, defeating the Shaker Heights Red Raiders 17-7. With a well-rounded effort on both offense and defense, the Cougars improved their season record to 12-3.

Lilly Doolan led the offensive charge with five goals, showcasing her scoring prowess. Claire Gibbons and Megan Joy each added three goals, helping to build and maintain a dominant lead. On the defensive end, Maddie Gibbons stood out with five ground balls and two caused turnovers, disrupting Shaker Heights' possession throughout the game.

Megan Joy also contributed significantly in the midfield with four draw controls, giving Lake Catholic consistent possession and momentum. In goal, Morgan Davis faced 16 shots and made nine saves, earning the win for the Cougars.

Lake Catholic will look to keep their momentum going in their next matchup on Monday when they host Boardman at 6:30 p.m.
