Police Search for Suspect After CVS Robbery in Mentor

A late-morning robbery at a CVS Pharmacy in Mentor triggered a police search and brief lockdowns at nearby schools on Tuesday, May 13.

Around 10:53 a.m., Mentor police responded to the CVS at 9040 Mentor Avenue after a report of a robbery. According to early findings, a man wearing khaki pants and a gray hoodie handed a note to a cashier demanding money. He gestured toward his waistband to suggest he had a weapon, then took an undetermined amount of cash from the register before fleeing on foot, heading south on Hopkins Road.

Police quickly established a perimeter and deployed K-9 and drone units in an attempt to locate the suspect. Despite the swift response, the man was not found.

As a safety measure, Mentor Memorial Junior High and Hopkins Elementary enacted a ā€œshelter in placeā€ protocol. This precaution meant that normal operations continued inside the schools, but entry and exit were temporarily restricted. School resource officers were alerted to the nearby police activity.

The Mentor Police Department continues to investigate the incident. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Officer Zevnik at 440-974-5789, referencing report number 25-13288.

šŸ“° UC Davis Study Links Early Neutering to Health Risks in Large Dog Breeds

New research from the University of California, Davis is prompting a reexamination of the long-standing practice of spaying and neutering dogs—especially for large breeds—highlighting potential long-term health risks linked to the timing and method of these surgeries.

Drs. Benjamin and Lynette Hart, professors emeriti at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, have led comprehensive studies based on tens of thousands of cases from the university’s teaching hospital. Their work, initially focused on Golden Retrievers, uncovered a significant increase in joint problems and cancer risk among dogs neutered at any age.

Golden Retrievers were particularly vulnerable. The removal of sex hormones before full physical maturity appears to delay bone growth plate closure, resulting in a fourfold increase in joint issues like hip dysplasia and ligament tears. Additionally, spayed females showed higher rates of serious cancers, including lymphosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, and mast cell tumors.

The Harts now advise against early spaying and neutering for female Goldens and suggest hormone-sparing alternatives, though these are often more expensive and less commonly performed. Their data also shows delayed surgery—until at least 24 months—benefits other large breeds like Mastiffs, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Standard Poodles, and large mixed breeds. Dobermans and Sheepdogs also showed higher risks of cancer and urinary issues when altered early.

In contrast, smaller breeds such as Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, and Pugs were largely unaffected by the timing of neutering, suggesting that size plays a critical role in how dogs respond to these procedures.

This evolving understanding is now being shared by the American Kennel Club and further explored in the Harts’ new book The Perfect Puppy, a guide for veterinarians and dog owners, including those training service animals like German Shepherds and Labradors.

While not discouraging spaying or neutering altogether, the researchers emphasize a more tailored approach, recommending delayed procedures or hormone-preserving surgeries for certain breeds to better support long-term health.

⚾ RamĆrez’s Late Homer Not Enough as Brewers Take Finale

The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a series sweep with a 9-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, fueled by a standout performance from Rhys Hoskins. The slugger tallied four hits and drove in five runs, including a go-ahead single in the sixth, a two-run homer in the seventh, and a two-run single in the ninth.

Jake Bauers contributed with an RBI double in the second and a run-scoring single in the sixth. After being shut out in the first two games of the series, Milwaukee’s offense came alive with its highest run output since April 22.

Rookie Logan Henderson earned the win in his second MLB start, allowing two runs and striking out seven over five innings. He gave up a solo homer to Kyle Manzardo in the second.

Cleveland made a late push with a three-run homer from JosĆ© RamĆrez in the eighth, trimming the deficit to 7-5. Nolan Jones added two hits and an RBI, but the Guardians couldn’t complete the rally.

The key moment came in the sixth when Milwaukee broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run outburst, capped by a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

Before the game, Milwaukee placed Jose Quintana on the injured list with a shoulder issue. Tobias Myers was recalled but did not join the team.

⚾ Cougars and Lions Split Series as Lake Catholic Bounces Back with 4-1 Win

Lake Catholic came up short in a tightly contested matchup against NDCL on Monday, May 12, falling 5-3 in a possible postseason preview between the district’s top two seeds.

The Cougars tied the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly from AJ Trobenter and kept the pressure on with key hits, but NDCL’s three-run homer in the fourth proved decisive. Lake Catholic chipped away with late runs — one in the sixth and another in the seventh — but couldn’t close the gap before NDCL sealed the win.

Despite the loss, the Cougars showed resilience at the plate and solid defensive moments, including a laser throw from Nick Dietrich to stop a run at home in the third.

Lake Catholic bounced back in a big way on Tuesday, defeating NDCL 4-1 in their rematch. The Cougars took control early with a run in the first inning and added three more in the third to build a lead they held the rest of the way.

Brayden Mann and Micah Nytrae each went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while AJ Trobenter contributed a double, a sac fly, and two RBIs in a strong offensive showing despite just six total hits.

On the mound, Patrick Radigan delivered a dominant complete game. He allowed only four hits and one run, walking three and striking out 13 to secure the win.

With the victory, Lake Catholic improves to 17-4 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Cougars next travel to face 19-3 Perry on Friday, May 16, in what promises to be a key late-season matchup.

šŸ„Mentor Girls Outpaced by Beavers in First-Round Showdown

Mentor's girls lacrosse team fought hard but couldn’t keep up with Riverside’s fast-paced start in a Division I first-round playoff game on May 14.

The Cardinals gave early resistance, with Ella Predina scoring twice to bring the score to 3-2 by the end of the first quarter. But Riverside responded immediately, scoring just 21 seconds into the second and pulling away with a dominant offensive showing to lead 10-3 at halftime.

Mentor struggled to contain the Beavers’ speed and precision. Riverside opened each quarter with a goal and used quick, decisive attacks to stretch Mentor’s defense. Despite adjustments, the Cardinals couldn’t fully recover.

A late five-goal surge in the final minutes, led by Ava Lee with three goals and support from Predina and Abby Harps, showed the Cardinals’ resilience. But it wasn’t enough to erase Riverside’s lead, and Mentor fell, 16-8.

Though the season ends here, the Cardinals’ strong finish and leadership from key players offer hope for the future.
