šŸ“° City of Mentor Launches Long-Term Development Plan with Focus on Community Input

The City of Mentor took its first major step toward shaping its future with the official kickoff of the 2025 Comprehensive Land Use Plan, held on May 14 at Springbrook Gardens Park. City staff, joined by representatives from urban planning firm Stantec, welcomed residents to the outdoor meeting to learn about the upcoming process and share their thoughts.

This event marks the beginning of a series of community meetings intended to inform and involve the public as the city crafts a new 20-year land use vision. The previous plan, adopted in 2011, served as a foundation for city planning and development. The 2025 update aims to go further—preserving valued aspects of the community, addressing current needs, and identifying new opportunities for growth.

A major focus of the new plan is the evaluation of Mentor’s commercial and industrial zones. Insights from the recently completed 2024 Housing Study will also play a key role. Together, these elements will inform practical policy updates and zoning strategies tailored to future development trends and the city's evolving economic landscape.

Public involvement is central to the plan’s success. Residents and business owners will have multiple opportunities to engage—from attending open houses to participating in online surveys. A steering committee made up of community leaders and stakeholders has been assembled to guide the planning process and ensure a wide range of perspectives are included.

The city has launched a dedicated platform, HelpShapeMentor.com, where residents can follow the project’s progress, view meeting schedules, and access related documents. Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. has been selected to support the city in this long-term planning effort.

Those seeking additional details or wishing to get involved can contact the City of Mentor’s Planning Department at (440) 974-5740 or via email at [email protected].

šŸ“° Mentor School Board Backs Full Fair School Funding, Opposes State Restrictions

The Mentor School Board passed a resolution supporting the full implementation of the Fair School Funding Plan and opposing state-imposed limits on district reserves. While three board members backed the resolution, two abstained over concerns with its language. The resolution argues the current state budget underfunds Mentor Schools and threatens local control. A pre-meeting rally emphasized community support for adequate public school funding.

⚾ Reds Outslug Guardians Early, Hold On for 5–4 Victory

The Cincinnati Reds held off a late push from the Cleveland Guardians to secure a 5-4 win on Friday night, fueled by early home runs and solid bullpen work.

Will Benson delivered the game's biggest blow with a three-run shot in the second inning, giving the Reds an early cushion. Austin Hays followed with a solo homer in the third, extending the lead to 5-0. Both homers came off Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee, who allowed four earned runs and 10 hits across six innings.

Reds starter Brady Singer picked up his fifth win of the season, giving up three runs on three hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked one. Emilio PagƔn closed out the game with a perfect ninth, notching his 10th save.

Cleveland mounted a steady comeback. Carlos Santana’s two-run single in the fourth put the Guardians on the board, followed by solo home runs from Bo Naylor in the fifth and JosĆ© RamĆrez in the eighth, trimming the deficit to just one run.

A crucial defensive play by Cleveland’s Will Brennan helped limit further damage when he threw out Gavin Lux at home plate in the third, preventing the Reds from scoring a sixth run.

Despite the loss, the Guardians have already clinched the season series against their Ohio rivals, retaining the ā€œOhio Cupā€ for an 11th straight year.

Looking ahead, the Reds will send Chase Petty to the mound on Saturday, while Slade Cecconi is set to return from the injured list to start for Cleveland.

⚾ Mentor’s Winning Streak Snapped by Fast-Starting Wildcats

In a clash between two of Ohio’s top baseball teams, Mentor fell 5-2 to St. Ignatius on Friday night. The Wildcats got their revenge after a loss to the Cardinals in May 2024, ending Mentor’s three-game winning streak.

Mentor starter Dom Luvison allowed three earned runs in the first inning but settled in to finish with four hits allowed over three innings. Will Link followed with another steady outing, giving up one earned run and two hits across three frames. Link has now allowed two hits or fewer in four straight games.

The Cardinals scattered seven hits among seven players. Jack Vanhimbergen went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Tyson Cendrowski added an RBI, going 1-for-3. Despite solid contact, Mentor couldn’t generate the offense needed to rally.

St. Ignatius secured its fourth straight win, improving to 11-4. Mentor, now 16-5, travels to face Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy on Monday at 5:00 p.m.
