📰 PACE Lives On: Jack Sawyer’s Legacy Uplifts Mentor’s Class of 2025

News5Cleveland.com

After the loss of their 17-year-old son, Jack Sawyer, to Ewing sarcoma in November 2023, Dawn and Matt Sawyer have dedicated themselves to honoring his legacy in their hometown of Mentor, Ohio. Jack lived by the motto “PACE: Positive Attitude Changes Everything,” a message that now fuels a scholarship fund and inspires his community.

At what would have been Jack’s senior year, his parents awarded five $2,000 scholarships at Mentor High School. Students applied by writing about the impact of music or the influence of PACE in their lives — themes close to Jack’s heart. The scholarship idea was Jack’s own, funded from his personal savings to give back to the community he loved.

Beyond scholarships, the Sawyers hosted a senior breakfast to support Jack’s classmates and maintain his uplifting spirit. “JBS Strong” became a local movement during Jack’s illness, even resonating with namesake and Ohio State football player Jack Sawyer, who plans to honor the message in the NFL.

The second annual Jack B. Sawyer Memorial Golf Outing will be held on June 21 at St. Denis Golf Club, continuing Jack’s impact through scholarship fundraising — a lasting legacy of hope, generosity, and the power of positivity.

📰 Lake County Sheriff’s New Crime Unit Makes Over 260 Arrests in Nine Months

A new Lake County Sheriff’s unit is making a strong impact with over 260 arrests and major drug seizures since its launch last year. The four-person team focuses on fugitives, illegal drugs, and firearms as part of a proactive policing strategy.

In the past nine months, deputies have made 261 warrant arrests and 30 drug arrests. Their workload has grown steadily, handling 687 calls in February, 713 in March, and 903 in April. Recent traffic stops led to the seizure of nearly three pounds of methamphetamine, packaged for local distribution.

Sheriff Frank Leonbrunno credits the unit’s success to targeted enforcement. The team also assists other agencies and responds to varied situations including narcotics detection and missing person searches.

Deputies Matt Arko and Brandon Savage, along with K9 partner Ryker, are key to the operation. Ryker’s advanced scent detection is critical in identifying drugs and locating discarded items.

The Sheriff’s Office views the unit as an essential part of its mission to enhance safety and reduce crime throughout Lake County.

📰 Mentor Police Join National “Click It or Ticket” Campaign Ahead of Memorial Day

The Mentor Police Department will join law enforcement agencies nationwide in the Click It or Ticket campaign from May 19 to June 1, 2025, a high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Coinciding with the busy Memorial Day travel period, the campaign aims to reduce traffic fatalities by increasing seat belt use. Officers will take a no-excuses approach, issuing citations both day and night to drivers and passengers who aren’t buckled up.

Although national daytime seat belt use reached 91.9% in 2023, the remaining 8.1% still account for a large number of crash deaths. Nighttime enforcement is a priority, as unbelted fatalities are more common after dark. NHTSA data from 2023 shows 53% of male and 41% of female crash victims were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Mentor Police stress that buckling up is not just a safety measure — it’s the law. Officers want drivers to remember that taking two seconds to click a seat belt can mean the difference between life and death.

🗺️7 Must-See Great Lakes Getaways for Nature Lovers and Adventurers (Michigan and West)

The Great Lakes region offers an unexpected escape into natural beauty, with dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and charming harbor towns that rival coastal getaways. Often referred to as America’s “Third Coast,” this area is a dream destination for outdoor lovers seeking unique, uncrowded adventures. From Michigan’s sandy dunes to Wisconsin’s rugged sea caves, these ten destinations showcase the very best the Great Lakes have to offer.

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan

Perched on the edge of Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features sweeping sandscapes, panoramic views, and tranquil swimming spots. North Bar Lake Beach provides easy access for families, while hikers can explore stunning overlooks like Pyramid Point. Though amenities are sparse, campsites like DH Day and Platte River Campground offer excellent bases for exploring the area.

2. Leland, Michigan

Located on the Leelanau Peninsula, Leland combines natural beauty with rustic charm. The historic Fishtown district, with its weathered shanties and riverside docks, is ideal for a picnic or leisurely stroll. Nearby trails and the Clay Cliffs offer peaceful hikes with striking lake views. Peak season brings crowds, but fall offers a quieter, equally picturesque visit.

3. Traverse City, Michigan

Nestled along Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City is a vibrant hub for exploring northern Michigan. Visitors can bike along the waterfront, indulge in local brews, and day trip to nearby gems like Sleeping Bear Dunes or Torch Lake. Sunset at the Mission Point Lighthouse is a must-see after a day of hiking or paddling.

4. Torch Lake, Michigan

Known for its Caribbean-blue water, Torch Lake is a favorite for swimming and boating. The southern sandbar is a hotspot for shallow-water fun, while surrounding lakes like Elk Lake and Lake Skegemog offer peaceful alternatives. Public access is available via Torch River, and nearby Bellaire is a great stop for food, paddling, and craft beer.

5. Bayfield, Wisconsin

A quiet harbor town on Lake Superior, Bayfield is ideal for kayaking, hiking, and island hopping. Visitors can explore the Apostle Islands from here or take a ferry to Madeline Island for cliff jumping and coastal trails. Family-friendly hikes, such as the one to Lost Creek Falls, round out the experience.

6. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Wisconsin

Made up of 21 wild islands, the Apostle Islands offer solitude and adventure on the open waters of Lake Superior. Sea kayaking reveals intricate sea caves and remote beaches, while overnight trips to islands like Stockton deliver an unforgettable wilderness experience. Paddlers should be experienced or consider guided tours due to changing lake conditions.

7. Two Harbors, Minnesota

On Minnesota’s stretch of the Lake Superior shoreline, Two Harbors serves as a launchpad to natural wonders. Nearby, Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse offer iconic views, easy hiking, and picnic spots. The town itself features a working lighthouse and cozy local spots like Castle Danger Brewery.

⚾ Guardians’ Bats Go Quiet in 4–1 Loss to Cincinnati

The Cleveland Guardians fell 4–1 to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night, despite a strong first start from right-hander Slade Cecconi.

Making his team debut after recovering from a spring oblique injury, Cecconi struck out eight over five innings without issuing a walk—becoming just the third pitcher in franchise history to do so in their first start, joining Tanner Bibee (2023) and Floyd Weaver (1962).

Cleveland took a 1–0 lead in the fifth when Daniel Schneemann hit his sixth home run of the season. The Reds answered quickly as former Guardian Will Benson tied it with a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning—his third in three games.

Cincinnati took control in the sixth. TJ Friedl doubled and scored on a surprise RBI single from Santiago Espinal, who then scored on a double by Austin Hays. The Reds extended their lead to 4–1 in the seventh with a solo homer from Rece Hinds off Jakob Junis.

Cleveland’s offense was limited to four hits. After Brent Suter’s three scoreless innings, five Reds relievers held the Guardians to a single run, with Luis Mey (1–0) earning the win and Emilio Pagán closing the door for his 11th save.

⚾ Lake Catholic Rallies Late, Stuns Perry in Extra-Inning Thriller

Lake Catholic, playing without senior shortstop Patrick Radigan, staged a late rally to defeat Perry, 7–4, in extra innings at Classic Park on May 16 in the Captains Charities Classic.

Trailing 3–2 in the seventh, Brayden Mann tied the game with an RBI single and later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Perry answered in the bottom half to force extras, but the Cougars broke through again. Danny Locker led off the eighth with a single and scored on Pete Malchesky’s pinch-hit RBI. AJ Trobenter followed with a two-run shot to right, sealing the win.

Senior Shea Sievers pitched the final five innings in relief, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out six to earn the win. Mann scored three times, while Locker and Trobenter each had two hits as Lake Catholic improved to 18–4 and snapped Perry’s 13-game winning streak.

Perry freshman Carter Crofoot drove in three runs on two hits, helping the Pirates build an early lead. The defense turned two double plays and made several key stops, but couldn’t hold off Lake Catholic’s late surge.

The Cougars play Lakewood twice before opening postseason play against Warrensville Heights on May 22. Perry (20–4) hosts Hudson and St. John ahead of its Division IV sectional final the same day.
