📰 Mentor Schools Weigh-in on Budget Impact in New Video Update

Mentor Public Schools is urging community members to stay informed about Ohio’s state biennium budget process, which could impact school funding for the next two years. With the proposed budget already passed by the House and now under Senate review, district leaders warn of potential negative effects on local schools.

A video featuring the CFO and Superintendent explains how proposed changes could reduce funding for Mentor Schools.

Despite financial challenges, Mentor Schools continues to perform well—earning a 4.5-star rating from the state—while maintaining the third lowest school tax rate in Lake County. This has been achieved without a new operating levy since 2016.

Residents are encouraged to contact their legislators and share personal stories about the importance of adequately funding Mentor Schools, highlighting the value the district provides to students and the community.

🏘️ What’s a Good Mortgage Rate in 2025? It Depends on Your Finances

In May 2025, a "good" mortgage rate typically falls in the high-6% range for 30-year fixed loans and high-5% for 15-year terms. However, these rates vary significantly based on factors like credit score, loan type, term length, and financial stability.

The average 30-year rate as of May 15 was 6.81%, while the 15-year averaged 5.92%. Borrowers with excellent credit may secure lower rates, while those with lower scores could face offers above 7%. Credit scores heavily influence rates—someone with a 760+ score might see a 7.15% APR, compared to 7.80% for scores in the low 600s.

Rates also differ by loan type: FHA and VA loans tend to offer lower rates, while jumbo loans are higher. Many advertised rates assume borrowers will pay for discount points, which may not reflect your actual cost unless you opt in.

Mortgage rates have been volatile, rising sharply between 2022 and 2023 due to inflation and Fed actions, and have remained elevated in 2025. Despite hopes for a decline, rates currently sit near late-2023 highs.

To find the best rate, borrowers should get quotes from multiple lenders and compare Loan Estimates. Factors like income stability, debt-to-income ratio, and down payment size all play a role. APR, which includes fees and insurance, offers a clearer view of total loan cost than interest rate alone.

The bottom line: A good mortgage rate is specific to your financial profile. Shop around, compare offers, and negotiate to get the best possible deal.

⚾ Guardians Swept in Cincinnati After Late Rally Falls Short

The Cleveland Guardians fell 3-1 to the Cincinnati Reds in the series finale, getting swept ahead of a key matchup against the Minnesota Twins.

Cleveland had a strong start as Steven Kwan reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole second. The Guardians loaded the bases but stranded three runners. Reds starter Andrew Abbott settled in after a shaky opening frame. Luis Ortiz worked through early traffic, helped by a double play and timely strikeouts. A defensive error by Gabriel Arias in the third added pressure, but the Reds failed to score.

Cincinnati broke through in the fourth when former Guardian Will Benson hit a two-run homer. Ortiz recovered and finished with five innings pitched, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven.

Hunter Gaddis took over in the sixth and surrendered another home run to Benson. A dropped popup by Carlos Santana nearly led to more damage, but a pickoff ended the inning. Cleveland’s only run came in the seventh. Bo Naylor walked and later scored on Carlos Santana’s single. Kolby Allard delivered two clean innings to keep the game close.

In the ninth, Naylor doubled and José Ramírez singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Santana struck out after a long at-bat, and Will Brennan followed with a swinging strikeout to end the game.

Next, the Guardians travel to Minnesota for a pivotal series against the AL Central-leading Twins. Logan T. Allen will start opposite Bailey Ober, with first pitch scheduled for 7:40 PM EDT in Minneapolis.

⚾ Captains Crushed by Loons in 9-1 Defeat to Close Road Series

The Lake County Captains endured a tough loss on May 18, falling 9-1 to the Great Lakes Loons, who powered their way to victory with a pair of three-run home runs. The defeat marked the Captains’ third straight loss and capped a six-game series in which they dropped four contests.

Starting pitcher Jackson Humphries, a 2022 draft selection by the Guardians, continued his winless season, falling to 0-5. Despite recording six strikeouts across 4 2/3 innings, he issued four walks and surrendered three runs. Of his 82 pitches, 48 were strikes. Humphries now holds a 3.90 ERA over eight starts in the 2025 season.

The bullpen struggled as well. Reliever Jay Driver faced six batters without retiring any, allowing three runs on a home run. Later, Jack Jasiak faced three batters and also failed to record an out, giving up another three-run homer. Steven Pérez offered some stability with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, while Josh Harlow closed the game with two shutout frames.

Offensively, the Captains managed only three hits, two of which came from Christian Knapczyk. Wuilfredo Antunez was responsible for the team’s lone run with a groundout RBI in the seventh inning. The team went just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and struck out 13 times.

The Captains will look to rebound when they return home to Eastlake for a new series against Lansing, starting May 20.
