🥇 Mentor Tops Ohio Cities in 2025–2026 National Livability Rankings

Mentor, Ohio

Mentor, Ohio, has been recognized as one of the best places to live in the United States for 2025–2026, earning the No. 1 spot in Ohio and ranking No. 138 nationwide, according to U.S. News & World Report. The annual report, which evaluates cities based on factors like affordability, job market strength, quality of life, and overall desirability, assessed more than 850 locations across the country.

Mentor’s strong performance in this year’s rankings highlights its appeal as a top-tier community for both individuals and families. The selection was based on a combination of public survey responses, federal data, and analytics from U.S. News.

City Manager Kenneth Filipiak expressed pride in the recognition, emphasizing that while the city’s quality of life is well known to residents, national acknowledgment from a respected source reaffirms Mentor's standing.

Mentor topped the list of Ohio cities, followed by Parma, Columbus, Hamilton, and Lima. Nationally, the top five cities were Johns Creek, Georgia; Carmel, Indiana; Pearland, Texas; Fishers, Indiana; and Cary, North Carolina.

📰 Despite Slight Rise, Mentor Holds Strong in Statewide Job Market

City of Mentor

The City of Mentor experienced a modest increase in its unemployment rate in April 2025, climbing to 3.8%—a 0.1% rise from the previous month. Compared to the same time last year, when the rate stood at 3.2%, the city has seen a gradual upward shift. Despite this, Mentor continues to rank among the cities with the lowest unemployment rates in Ohio for populations of 50,000 or more.

Lakewood holds the top spot with the lowest unemployment at 3.5%, followed by Mentor at 3.8%, Cleveland Heights at 4.0%, and Parma at 4.2%. Mentor’s civilian labor force remains steady at 25,700.

In Lake County, the unemployment rate held at 4.1% in April, unchanged from the previous month but higher than the 3.4% rate reported in April 2024.

Statewide, Ohio saw a slight improvement as the unemployment rate dropped by 0.3% to 4.9% in April. However, this marks an increase from the 3.9% rate recorded one year ago.

The data highlights a generally tight labor market in Mentor and other urban centers across Ohio, even amid broader state-level fluctuations.

📰 Public Input Sought for Mentor Lagoons Dock Expansion

City of Mentor

The City of Mentor plans to expand its ADA-accessible kayak dock at Mentor Lagoons Marina, aiming to increase kayak launch capacity from one to four users. This project aligns with Mentor’s 2011 Master Plan objective of promoting recreational water activities.

The $44,800 project will be largely funded by a NatureWorks grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, covering 75% ($33,600) of the cost. Completion is anticipated by summer 2026.

According to the submitted design plans, the expansion will include multiple new EZ Dock sections, ADA-compliant safety curbing, aluminum gangways with handrails, solar lighting, and kayak racks. The existing launch platform will be relocated 6–7 feet toward the channel to integrate with the new layout.

Residents are encouraged to review the plan and provide comments to Grant Supervisor Kevin Grippi at [email protected] by June 1, 2025.

⚾ Guardians Blank Tigers 7-0 Behind Bibee’s Dominant Start

The Cleveland Guardians dominated the Detroit Tigers 7-0 on Thursday night in their first matchup since last season's AL Division Series. Strong pitching and key hits led Cleveland past a surging Detroit team.

Carlos Santana broke the deadlock in the fourth inning with a two-run double to center, and Angel Martínez added a solo homer in the fifth. That was more than enough support for Tanner Bibee, who pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight—his highest total in ten starts.

Tigers starter Jack Flaherty recorded his 1,000th career strikeout in the first and held Cleveland in check early. But after a walk to Kyle Manzardo in the fourth, Santana capitalized, and Flaherty exited after 6 2/3 innings, charged with three runs.

Detroit had its best chance in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs. But Cleveland reliever Cade Smith struck out three straight batters to end the threat.

The Guardians added four runs in the ninth, aided by a fielding error that allowed Santana—who had walked—to score again.

Cleveland snapped a tough stretch, having lost seven of its last ten, while halting Detroit’s recent momentum after they had won seven of nine.

The series continues Friday, with Detroit’s Jackson Jobe (4-0, 4.12 ERA) facing Cleveland’s Slade Cecconi (0-1, 5.40 ERA).
