šāāļø Cool Temps Stall Pool Season Kickoff at Mentor Recreation Center

The much-anticipated opening of the outdoor pool at the Mentor Community Recreation Center has been postponed through Sunday due to unseasonably cool temperatures. Originally set to welcome swimmers on Saturday, the chilly forecast has forced officials to keep the facility closed a bit longer.
City staff will continue to monitor weather conditions and determine on Monday whether it's warm enough to safely open. Updates will be shared as soon as a decision is made.
The City of Mentor thanks residents for their understanding and is hopeful that warmer, pool-friendly days are just around the corner.
š° Lake County Retired Teachers Plan Luncheon, Fundraiser, and Donation Collection
The Lake County Retired Teachers Association (LCRTA) will host its General Membership luncheon on Monday, June 10, at Mama Robertoās, 8658 Mentor Avenue, in Mentor. Social time begins at 11 a.m., followed by a program at 11:30 and a buffet lunch.
The menu includes sausage and meatless pizza, tossed salad, tomato basil soup, cookies, and beverages. During the event, LCRTA will recognize its 2024ā2025 scholarship and grant recipients.
A donation drive with Goodwill will be held in the parking lot before the luncheon. Attendees are encouraged to bring items such as clothing, shoes, books, and electronics to help support LCRTAās scholarship fund. Aluminum can pull tabs will also be collected for Ronald McDonald House.
Reservations are required by May 30. The $19 fee should be sent by check to Karen Sawitke at 9399 Ridgeside Drive, Mentor, OH 44060. Guests should use the rear parking lot and entrance.
Retired teachers from Ohioās STRS or similar systems are invited to attend and may join the association. Associate memberships are available for $10. More details can be found at lakecountyrta.weebly.com.
š Seniors Take a Joyful Trip Down Memory Lane in Heartwarming Send-Off
The graduating class enjoyed a joyful and emotional send-off this week, marking the end of their high school journey with a morning full of celebration and nostalgia. The day kicked off with fun activities on campus, setting a festive tone for the seniors' final moments together.
One of the most touching highlights was a special school bus tour that took the soon-to-be graduates back to their elementary and middle schools. There, they were greeted with enthusiastic clap-outs from younger students and staffācheers, high-fives, and smiles all around.
This tradition gave seniors a chance to reflect on how far theyāve come, while inspiring the next generation of students. It was a send-off to remember, filled with pride, excitement, and community spirit.
š° Mentorās Hidden Gem: A Birding Paradise During Spring Migration

Though not widely known, Lake County, Ohio, is quickly gaining recognition as one of the stateās top birding destinations during spring migration. With more than 340 bird species recorded, the areaās rich mix of parks and preserves makes it a crucial stop for migratory birds en route to Canada.
From late April to May, species such as warblers, flycatchers, and buntings pass through, with wood warblersālike the striking Magnolia Warblerābeing a seasonal highlight. Top birding locations include Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve, Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, and the Zimmerman Trail, where up to two dozen warbler species can be seen on a good day.
Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve stands out as a birding treasure, offering 691 acres of wetland and forest habitat. Managed by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, it provides a haven for marsh-dwelling birds like the Least Bittern and Yellow Rail. The Wake Robin boardwalk offers up-close views into this thriving ecosystem.
Nearby, Mentor Lagoons hosts a colony of Purple Martins, which migrate from the Amazon to breed in cavity gourds maintained by the city. The site has also delivered rare sightings like Ohioās first Tropical Kingbird and the Little Blue Heron.
With easy access, amenities, and growing awareness, Lake County is drawing more visitors each year, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for spring birdwatching.

š„ Mentor Outlasts Berea-Midpark in 9-Inning Playoff Thriller
The Mentor Cardinals girls varsity softball team claimed a 10-7 win in a dramatic nine-inning playoff game against Berea-Midpark. The teams traded runs throughout the contest, with the Titans tying the game in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run inning.
Mentor responded in extra innings, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to seal the win. The Cardinals tallied 14 hits in total, led by Ireland Rainey, who went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and three RBIs. Maddie Beam-Jones added two hits and RBIs, while Kathryn Bouffard and Maddie Menough each had two hits, with Menough driving in one run.
Pitcher Maggie Haydu threw all nine innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, while striking out six. The victory boosts Mentor's record to 22-7 as they prepare to host Lincoln on May 28 in the next playoff round.

Slade Cecconi delivered a solid outing on Friday night, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits over six innings, striking out six and earning his first win of the season.
Cleveland struck early with a two-run first inning. Steven Kwan led off with a double and JosĆ© RamĆrez followed with a triple to deep center to open the scoring. Carlos Santana added a two-out RBI single to give the Guardians a 2-0 advantage.
Cecconi escaped a fourth-inning jam with runners on the corners by inducing a shallow flyout and a groundout, preserving the lead. Detroit didnāt get on the board until the sixth, when Spencer Torkelson ended Clevelandās shutout streak with a solo home runāhis 13th of the season.
Bo Naylor tripled to lead off the ninth, and Kwan tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to make it 3-1. The Guardiansā bullpen locked down the win, with Hunter Gaddis throwing two scoreless innings and Emmanuel Clase retiring the side in the ninth for his 10th save.
Detroit starter Jackson Jobe suffered his first career loss after giving up two runs in five innings. The Tigers had won his first eight startsāthe longest such streak to begin a career in franchise history.

ā¾ Mentor Powers Past Twinsburg with 13-Hit Surge in 8-1 Victory
The Mentor Cardinals delivered a commanding 8-1 victory over the Twinsburg Tigers in a non-conference baseball clash on Friday, dominating both offensively and defensively at home. With a strong start, Mentor put two runs on the board in the first inning, matched that in the third, and sealed the game with a four-run burst in the fifth, finishing with 13 total hits.
Mentorās offense showcased balance throughout the lineup. Key performances included Jack Vanhimbergen, who reached base multiple times and scored a run, Brayden Bortnick with a double and an RBI, and Austin Vanhuss adding a triple among his two hits. Tyler Black also tripled and drove in three runs, while Pat Collins contributed with a single, two RBIs, and a walk.
