📰 How Your Lawn Care Can Help Protect Lake Erie
You might not realize it, but the way you care for your lawn and garden can have a direct effect on the health of Lake Erie. Everyday materials like fertilizers, pesticides, pet waste, and even grass clippings can contribute to pollution and harmful algae blooms if not handled properly.
When left on the ground, these substances are easily carried away by rain into storm sewers—which, in many communities including Mentor, flow directly into Lake Erie without any treatment. This runoff is rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, nutrients that can cause algae to grow excessively. These algae blooms can damage ecosystems, harm fish and aquatic wildlife, and even affect water quality for humans.
To help keep our waterways clean this summer, residents are encouraged to adopt a few simple lawn care practices:
Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly and never apply them when rain is in the forecast.
Sweep up any remaining product from driveways or sidewalks to keep it from washing away.
Compost or properly dispose of yard waste rather than dumping it into storm drains, streams, or ditches.
Make sure all wastewater from your home flows to the proper septic system or sanitary sewer. Never allow it to enter storm drains or natural waterways.
Always clean up after your pets, and throw their waste in the trash—not down the drain.
Small changes in your daily habits can add up to a big difference in protecting Lake Erie and the environment around you.
For more information or questions about local environmental practices, contact the City of Mentor Building and Engineering Department at (440) 255-1100 or email [email protected].
🏍️ Free Motorcycle Skills Training Coming to Lakeland Community College
Licensed motorcycle riders have a chance to sharpen their skills this June with a free, hands-on training session courtesy of Motorcycle Ohio. Two dates are available — June 7 and June 8 — and both sessions will take place at Lakeland Community College.
Riders can choose between novice and intermediate levels, making the sessions ideal whether you're fresh on two wheels or looking to fine-tune your technique. Participants must bring their own motorcycles, and all training will take place in a controlled, supervised setting focused on safety and skill-building.

✈️ Austin Cracks Top 5 U.S. Summer Travel Destinations for 2025

Triple-digit heat isn’t stopping travelers from flocking to Central Texas this summer. According to a new WalletHub study, the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown metro area has climbed to No. 5 on the 2025 list of "Best Summer Travel Destinations" in the U.S., marking a steady rise in popularity for the capital city.
The annual ranking evaluates 100 major metropolitan areas based on factors such as attractions, safety, affordability, weather, and travel convenience. Austin scored especially well for its vibrant attractions, coming in at No. 10 in that category, thanks to its renowned live music scene, eclectic restaurants, and outdoor offerings.
Other standout rankings for Austin included No. 21 in both weather and local costs, and No. 25 for activities. However, it ranked lower in safety (No. 44) and travel costs and hassles (No. 65), suggesting that while the experience may be memorable, getting there and staying safe can require some planning.
The Austin metro moved up one spot from its 2024 position and has seen a significant climb since being ranked 14th just two years ago. The survey also factors in surrounding areas, so visitors might explore beyond city limits, discovering gems like downtown Georgetown or the scenic wineries of Dripping Springs.
WalletHub emphasizes the importance of balancing entertainment with affordability, especially with rising travel-related expenses. Austin appears to strike that balance well for many vacationers.
Texas as a whole had a strong showing in the rankings. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington secured the No. 10 spot, while San Antonio-New Braunfels followed at No. 18. El Paso landed at No. 31, surprisingly ahead of Houston, which came in at No. 35. Rounding out the Texas entries were Corpus Christi at No. 80 and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission at No. 97.
Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida, claimed the top spot for 2025, with other popular destinations including Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Honolulu.

⚾ Guardians Storm Back Late to Halt Angels’ Road Streak
A dramatic seventh-inning surge helped the Cleveland Guardians erase a four-run deficit and end the Los Angeles Angels’ eight-game road winning streak with a 7-5 victory on Saturday at Progressive Field.
Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, Cleveland pulled even when Carlos Santana launched a solo homer off Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn. After a single and a walk set the table, Gabriel Arias delivered the game-changing blow — a two-out, two-run double to center on a full count — giving the Guardians their first lead of the game.
Cleveland’s bullpen held firm after starter Slade Cecconi allowed five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. The combined efforts of Hunter Gaddis, Nic Enright, Logan Allen, and Cade Smith kept the Angels off the scoreboard, and Emmanuel Clase closed it out with a flawless ninth to earn his 12th save of the season.
The Angels jumped ahead early with back-to-back home runs in the third from Yoán Moncada and Taylor Ward. Jo Adell’s two-run homer in the same frame extended the lead to 4-0, boosting Kyle Hendricks' bid for his 100th career win.
Cleveland answered in the fourth when Nolan Jones tripled in two runs. Though Mike Trout’s third straight hit — an RBI double — added to the Angels’ total, the Guardians stayed in striking distance thanks to solo home runs by José Ramírez in the fifth and Steven Kwan in the sixth. Kwan, who went 3-for-5, came up just a triple short of the cycle.
Hendricks exited after giving up the Kwan homer, finishing with four runs allowed on seven hits and a season-high six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
The Angels, who have now homered in 14 consecutive road games — tying a franchise record — will look to claim their first series win in Cleveland since 2013 in Sunday’s rubber match.

⚾ Lake Catholic Edges Walsh Jesuit to Push Win Streak to Six
The Lake Catholic Cougars continued their winning ways on Saturday, edging out the Walsh Jesuit Warriors 4-3 in their tightest contest in over a month. The victory marks the Cougars’ sixth straight win and pushes their season record to an impressive 22-4.
After dominating recent opponents with wide margins — including a 28-0 rout over Warrensville Heights and a 9-1 win over Northwest — Lake Catholic faced a tougher challenge against a resilient Walsh Jesuit team. The Cougars held strong in a nail-biter, clinching the win and preserving their perfect home streak during this run.
Pitcher Frankie Trinetti helped set the tone defensively, throwing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Offensively, A.J. Trobenter powered the lineup with a solo home run and two RBI, while Pete Malchesky chipped in with a pair of hits, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Walsh Jesuit, who entered the game riding a four-game winning streak of their own, dropped to 15-7-1 with the loss. It was a hard-fought battle, but not enough to halt Lake Catholic’s current momentum, which has seen the Cougars allow just two runs per game over their last six home contests.
Looking ahead, Lake Catholic, currently ranked 40th in Ohio by MaxPreps, will take on Girard (ranked 278th) on Tuesday afternoon. Walsh Jesuit, ranked 17th, will aim to bounce back against Stow-Munroe Falls (ranked 188th) in a Wednesday evening matchup.
