šŸ“° Cleveland Sees Two Consecutive Years of Population Growth

Source: Spectrum Local News / US Census

For the second year in a row, Cleveland’s population has shown signs of growth, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census. While the increase is modest, it marks a shift after several years of decline.

Cleveland’s estimated population in 2024 stands at 365,379—up from 364,276 in 2023 and 363,622 in 2022. Though these gains are incremental, they indicate a potential stabilization following a steep drop between 2020 and 2021. The city lost over 6,400 residents between 2020, when the population was 371,853, and 2024.

Elsewhere in Ohio, the state’s largest cities continue to trend upward. Columbus leads the way with consistent and robust growth. Its estimated 2024 population of 933,263 represents an increase of nearly 27,000 residents since 2020.

Cincinnati, while smaller than Columbus, has also seen steady gains. Its 2024 population estimate is 5,311 higher than in 2020.

While Cleveland’s growth is still relatively small in comparison, the two-year upward trend offers a glimmer of optimism for city leaders and planners focused on revitalization and long-term development.

⚾ Fried Fires One-Hitter as Yankees Blank Guardians 4-0

Max Fried delivered a stellar performance Thursday night, allowing just one infield single over six shutout innings as the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 4-0 at Yankee Stadium. The win marked a strong bounce-back for Fried after his first loss of the season.

Cody Bellinger led the offense with a two-run homer and an RBI single, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a late run-scoring hit. Aaron Judge reached base three times, including two intentional walks, and boosted his average to .392.

Fried (8-1) struck out seven, walked two, and retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. He gave up a single to JosĆ© RamĆrez in the first, extending the Cleveland slugger’s on-base streak to 31 games, just shy of his career high.

The Yankees broke through in the fourth when Judge doubled and Bellinger followed with a homer. Bellinger later added an RBI single in the seventh.

Cleveland threatened in the seventh by loading the bases, but reliever Tim Hill shut it down with two key outs. New York is now 11-2 in Fried’s starts and has won 16 of its last 22 games. Cleveland suffered its fourth shutout loss of the season. Up next, the Guardians host Houston, while the Yankees open a series against the Red Sox.

⚾ Lake Catholic Dominates Canfield to Capture Regional Title, 10-0

Lake Catholic made a statement in Thursday’s Division IV regional championship, shutting out Canfield 10-0 in six innings at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. Despite weather delays, the Cougars stayed sharp, earning their spot in the state semifinals with a dominant all-around performance.

Shea Sievers anchored the win with six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five. His control and consistency kept Canfield, a team coming off a 10-run semifinal win, completely off balance.

Offensively, Lake Catholic was relentless. The Cougars forced three Cardinals pitchers to throw over 150 pitches in just under six innings, racking up 11 hits and 10 walks. After a near-miss in the first inning, they broke through in the second with a sacrifice fly from Pete Malchesky to open the scoring.

The fourth inning blew the game open. After Sean Walsh singled and Brayden Mann drew a walk, the Cougars loaded the bases. Mann delivered a two-run single, and Patrick Radigan added two more with a hit of his own, giving Lake Catholic a 5-0 lead.

The Cougars didn’t let up. In the sixth, AJ Trobentor singled and Mann walked, setting up Micah Nyetrae’s deep triple that drove in both. Radigan followed with a double to score Nyetrae, pushing the lead to 8-0 just before a lightning delay halted the game for an hour.

After the delay, Lake Catholic stayed in control. Three consecutive walks brought in the ninth run, and Caden Boyes ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center, invoking the 10-run mercy rule.

The victory improved Lake Catholic’s record to 24-4 and ended Canfield’s season at 21-11. The Cougars now head to the state Final Four, riding a wave of momentum and a well-rounded game plan that left no doubt about their championship credentials.
