📰 Ohio BMV Alerts Drivers to Text Message Phishing Scam

Ohio BMV Warns Public About Ongoing Text Message Scam

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is alerting residents about a text message scam that is targeting drivers across the state. The fraudulent messages claim to be from the Ohio BMV and falsely state that recipients have unpaid traffic tickets. The texts urge immediate payment to avoid suspension of driving privileges.

This scam is part of a larger phishing scheme affecting individuals nationwide, aiming to extract personal or financial information through fear and urgency. The Ohio BMV has confirmed that it does not communicate via text message to demand payments or collect sensitive data.

Authorities are urging recipients of such messages not to click any links and to delete the message immediately. The scam has prompted a warning from BMV Registrar Charlie Norman, who emphasized that legitimate communication from the agency will never request payment or personal information through text.

Residents who receive suspicious messages are encouraged to report them to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Anyone who suspects they’ve fallen victim to this scam should contact local law enforcement for assistance.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Magnesium Shortfall Affects 50% of Americans, Study Finds

Half of Americans May Be Deficient in Magnesium, Undermining Vitamin D Effectiveness

A recent review published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association highlights a critical nutrient deficiency affecting nearly half of the U.S. population: magnesium. As the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, magnesium plays a vital role in hundreds of biological functions—most notably, its ability to activate vitamin D.

The study found that low magnesium levels can render vitamin D ineffective, even when supplemented. Researchers determined that individuals with adequate magnesium require significantly less vitamin D supplementation to achieve optimal levels, whereas those deficient in magnesium may not benefit from vitamin D at all. This combination of deficiencies has been linked to a higher risk of skeletal deformities, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.

The typical American diet—often rich in processed foods and low in essential nutrients—contains only about half the recommended magnesium intake. While the daily requirement is 420 mg for men and 320 mg for women, most people fall short due to limited consumption of magnesium-rich foods like green vegetables, soybeans, egg yolks, brown rice, and cashews.

Moreover, the study warns that taking vitamin D supplements without addressing a magnesium deficiency can pose health risks. Elevated calcium and phosphate levels, without adequate magnesium, may contribute to vascular calcification, a potentially dangerous condition.

The researchers also point to changing agricultural practices and dietary habits over recent decades as contributors to declining natural magnesium intake. With magnesium playing a role in preventing osteoporosis and reducing fracture risk, the findings underscore the importance of addressing this widespread deficiency.

⚾ Guardians Stifled by Reds’ Abbott in 1-0 Shutout Loss

The Cleveland Guardians came up short in a tightly contested matchup Tuesday night, falling 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds at Progressive Field. Despite a solid showing from starter Slade Cecconi, the Guardians’ offense couldn’t crack Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott, who went the distance with a three-hit shutout.

Cecconi pitched five strong innings, striking out eight and allowing just four hits. His only blemish came in the fifth, when Spencer Steer singled in Will Benson for the game's only run. The Guardians escaped further damage in that inning thanks to back-to-back foul ball catches by Carlos Santana.

Cleveland’s best scoring chance came in the ninth. Steven Kwan walked to lead off, but David Fry grounded into a double play. José Ramírez extended his on-base streak to 36 games with a single, tying a franchise best since 2013, but Santana’s flyout ended the game.

The Guardians have now dropped four of five on their current homestand and continue to slide, going 5-10 since May 25. Abbott's gem marked the first complete-game shutout by a Reds pitcher since 2021—also against Cleveland.

Elly De La Cruz added to the Reds' highlights by becoming the first Cincinnati player with 20+ stolen bases in each of his first three seasons, tallying 122 steals in just over 300 career games.

Cleveland looks to salvage the series finale Wednesday with lefty Logan Allen on the mound against Reds southpaw Nick Lodolo.

⚾ Captains Walk Off Dragons With Ninth-Inning Comeback

The Lake County Captains pulled off a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night, scoring all three of their runs in the bottom of the ninth to claim the series opener.

The game was a pitcher’s duel early, with neither team scoring through four innings. Dayton struck first in the fifth on a solo home run by Ariel Almonte — his third in as many games. The Dragons added a second run in the eighth, with Victor Acosta scoring on a Carlos Jorge single.

Dayton starter Brian Edgington was dominant, tossing six shutout innings and allowing just one hit. Dylan Simmons followed with two scoreless frames, stranding two runners in the eighth.

But the ninth unraveled for Dayton. A walk, an error, and an infield single loaded the bases for Lake County. Esteban Gonzalez tied the game with a two-run single that deflected off the shortstop’s glove, and Jonah Advincula followed with a line-drive single to center to win it.

Despite being outhit 6-5, the Captains capitalized on Dayton’s mistakes. Kyle Scott picked up the win in relief, while Trey Braithwaite took the loss.
