⚾ Lake Catholic to Battle Perkins for Division IV State Crown Today

(See this great video below of introductions and our national anthem. Video rotates after a few seconds)

Lake Catholic is one win away from a state championship.

The Cougars, riding the momentum of a dramatic semifinal victory, will meet Sandusky Perkins on today, Sunday morning, in the OHSAA Division IV state championship game at Canal Park in Akron. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.

Lake Catholic (25-4) earned its spot in the final by rallying past Unioto in a 5-3 win. Senior ace Patrick Radigan delivered a standout performance on the mound, striking out 12 while allowing just one earned run in a complete-game effort. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a program that finished 14-12 last season and is now ranked No. 26 in the state by MaxPreps.

Awaiting the Cougars is a Perkins squad (23-9) that narrowly escaped Indian Hill in the semifinals. The Pirates held a 4-0 lead entering the seventh before giving up three runs and ultimately holding on for a 4-3 win. This marks the first state title game appearance in program history for Perkins, which enters ranked No. 58 in Ohio.

Today’s matchup features two teams on very different journeys but with the same goal: to hoist the Division IV championship trophy.

🦟 Lake County Announces Mosquito Spray Schedule for Mid-June

Lake County Health District Launches 2025 Mosquito Treatment Program

The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) has begun its annual mosquito control treatments across densely populated areas of the county. These efforts are designed to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses and improve comfort during the summer months.

Mosquitoes in the area have previously tested positive for viruses such as La Crosse and St. Louis Encephalitis, both of which have been linked to human cases in Lake County. The spread of West Nile Virus has added to public health concerns, reinforcing the importance of these seasonal control measures.

LCGHD is licensed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture to apply pesticides for mosquito control. Treatment areas are chosen based on mosquito trap data, community complaints, and previous seasonal trends.

Upcoming Spray Schedule (Weather Permitting):

  • Monday, June 16, 2025: Mentor 1A (Headlands and eastern Lakeshore)

  • Tuesday, June 17, 2025: Mentor 1B (Routes 615 & Munson, Corduroy area)

Spraying may be delayed or canceled due to certain conditions, including:

  • Low mosquito counts at trap sites

  • Winds exceeding 15 mph

  • 50% or greater chance of rain

  • Temperatures below 55°F

  • Mechanical issues or air quality advisories

To check for schedule changes or weather-related updates, residents can call the Mosquito Treatment Hotline at (440) 350-2088 or visit www.lcghd.org/mosquito-control. Additional questions can be directed to the Health District offices weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (440) 350-2543 or (440) 918-2543.

šŸ–ļø Rethinking Vacations: Travelers Choose Value Over Distance in 2025

How Budget-Conscious Travelers Are Navigating Summer 2025 Vacations

As the summer season kicks off, many Americans are still determined to take a vacation—but with tighter budgets and economic uncertainty in mind, they’re adjusting their plans. This year, summer travel trends are shifting toward more frugal options, with travelers changing destinations, durations, and accommodations to save money.

A recent national survey conducted in late April and early May revealed that a vast majority—90% of respondents—are actively seeking ways to cut costs on summer travel. Industry reports confirm that travelers are being more selective, opting for domestic travel, shorter trips, or alternative lodging as inflation and other economic factors continue to impact consumer behavior.

Destination Shifts and Cost Savings

Despite financial caution, popular cities like Tokyo, London, Rome, and Paris remain top global choices, with travel sites Skyscanner and Kayak naming them among the most-searched destinations. Domestic hotspots like New York, Los Angeles, and Orlando are also high on the list.

For those still considering international travel, it may come as a pleasant surprise that airfare is trending downward. Flights to Asia are 11% cheaper this year, while prices to Europe and Africa have dropped by 8% and 5%, respectively.

Still, many Americans are choosing to stay closer to home. Airbnb reports that nearly 40% of travelers are planning domestic trips, while almost 30% of parents with children under 18 are leaning toward staycations as a more affordable alternative.

Strategic Timing for Lower Prices

Timing remains crucial for finding deals. According to Skyscanner, Wednesdays are typically the cheapest days to travel, with the week of August 25–31 offering the most budget-friendly rates. Kayak notes that flying on Tuesday, July 1 (before Independence Day) or Saturday, August 30 (before Labor Day) may lead to additional savings.

On the Road Again

In response to rising airfare, more travelers are choosing road trips. Deloitte’s Summer Travel Survey found that 22% of participants are opting to drive instead of fly this season. Airbnb’s findings echo that trend, with 43% of Americans saying they plan to hit the road.

Lodging Decisions Reflect Budget Concerns

While hotels remain the top accommodation choice, with 80% of travelers planning to stay in one at least once this summer, many are exploring alternatives. Private rentals are being used by 25%, and nearly a quarter of Americans plan to stay with friends or family to save on lodging costs. Among members of the home-swapping network Kindred, over 40% prefer staying with loved ones, and 12% are turning to home-sharing arrangements.

This summer, frugality is shaping vacations more than ever. Whether flying overseas or road-tripping to a nearby national park, travelers are making thoughtful choices to balance their wanderlust with their wallets.

⚾ Guardians Collapse Late as Mariners Walk Off in Seattle

The Cleveland Guardians let a late lead slip away Saturday night, falling 4-3 to the Seattle Mariners after a wild bottom of the ninth unraveled their hopes for a win at T-Mobile Park.

Cleveland held a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame, but closer Emmanuel Clase struggled to lock down the save. A leadoff single by Seattle’s Dominic Canzone and aggressive base running by pinch runner Dylan Moore quickly applied pressure. A perfectly executed bunt advanced Moore to third, and a wild pitch by Clase allowed the tying run to score. Moments later, Jorge Polanco delivered the finishing blow with a walk-off single up the middle, handing Clase his first loss of the season.

The Guardians had clawed back from an early two-run deficit after starter Tanner Bibee gave up a pair of runs in the second inning. Bibee settled in to pitch five innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. Offensively, Cleveland chipped away at Seattle’s lead, highlighted by JosĆ© RamĆrez’s solo homer in the fifth. The blast extended his on-base streak to 39 games, the longest active streak in Major League Baseball.

Despite the comeback and strong bullpen work heading into the ninth, Cleveland couldn’t maintain the momentum. Seattle’s Jackson Kowar earned the win with a clean top of the ninth, while George Kirby started the game for the Mariners, walking three and snapping his impressive streak of 68 consecutive starts with two or fewer walks.

The loss sets up a rubber match in Sunday’s series finale, with Luis Ortiz set to take the mound for Cleveland.
