šāāļø Sit Less, Move More: A Simple Workout to Reverse the Effects of Desk Life

self.com
Spending long hours sitting might be unavoidable for many, but it's important to recognize the toll it can take on the body. Though making time for exercise doesnāt erase all the effects of prolonged sitting, research shows that an hour or more of moderate physical activity daily can help mitigate some of the risksāsuch as elevated blood pressure, blood sugar irregularities, poor cholesterol levels, and an increased risk of heart disease.
While itās not conclusively proven that sitting alone causes these health issues, the strong association is enough to prompt experts to recommend reducing sedentary time and prioritizing movement. The good news is, even small amounts of activity can bring significant benefits.
One of the lesser-known consequences of sitting is its impact on posture and muscle function. Extended periods of sittingāespecially with poor postureātighten the hip flexors and weaken the glutes, leading to a condition known as "dead butt syndrome." This muscular imbalance can strain other parts of the body, affecting alignment and causing discomfort, particularly in the lower back.
Fortunately, there are ways to combat these effects. Experts recommend standing for 30 to 40 minutes daily and using standing desks when possible. Strengthening the back side of the bodyāincluding the glutes, hamstrings, and backāwhile stretching the front-side muscles like the hips and chest can help restore balance and promote better posture.
A targeted post-work exercise routine can also help. This simple, equipment-light circuit strengthens key muscle groups and realigns posture. All you need is a kettlebell or dumbbell and an exercise mat.
The Routine to Reboot Your Body
Equipment Needed:
One medium-to-heavy weight (kettlebell or dumbbell)
Exercise mat
Workout Instructions:
Perform each of the following exercises for 12ā15 reps (or 30 seconds for the plank). Rest for 20 seconds between moves. Complete 3 rounds.
1. Dead Bug
A core stabilizing move that activates the deepest abdominal muscles, helping to support spinal alignment.
2. Single-Leg Glute Bridge
Strengthens the glutes and hamstrings while engaging the core, improving pelvic stability.
3. Deadlift
Targets the posterior chaināincluding glutes, hamstrings, and backāto counteract forward-leaning posture.
4. Single-Arm Bent-Over Row
Focuses on the upper and mid-back, balancing out dominant chest muscles and improving upper-body posture.
5. Goblet Squat
Engages glutes, quads, and core while stretching tight hips and increasing lower-body mobility.
6. Plank (30 seconds)
An isometric full-body hold that challenges the core and supports proper pelvic and spinal alignment.
Adding this short, structured workout into your daily routine can make a noticeable difference in how your body feels and functions after a long day of sitting. Whether itās incorporating a few of these moves throughout the day or running through the full circuit after work, even small steps toward movement can yield meaningful health benefits.

ā¾ Ariasā Homer, Claseās Save Lead Guardians Past Giants
Guardians Edge Giants 3-2, Spoiling Deversā San Francisco Debut
Gabriel Arias hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth and doubled in the ninth to help the Cleveland Guardians hold off the San Francisco Giants 3-2 on Tuesday night, overshadowing the debut of newly acquired slugger Rafael Devers.
Devers, traded from Boston on Sunday, went 2-for-5 in his Giants debut and drove in a run with a double in the third. Cleveland answered with a Carlos Santana RBI single in the fourth to tie it.
The Giants had late chances to rally. In the eighth, two quick singles set up a potential scoring inning, but a sharp lineout to left was turned into a double play. In the ninth, they loaded the bases with one out, only for a flyout and strikeout to end the game. Emmanuel Clase earned his 15th save for Cleveland.
Robbie Ray allowed three runs over six innings and took the loss, while Slade Cecconi struck out six over five innings to earn the win for Cleveland.
Deversā arrival was welcomed with fanfare, including a pregame press conference attended by many teammates. Despite the loss, the Giants maintain their best all-time winning percentage against any team versus the Guardians.

ā¾ Lake County Cruises to 10-2 Win Behind Power Bats and Strong Bullpen
The Lake County Captains delivered a commanding 10-2 victory over the South Bend Cubs on Monday night, powered by a combination of explosive hitting and solid pitching. The Captains established an early lead and never looked back, opening the game with a two-run homer in the first inning.
Ralphy Velazquez launched his ninth home run of the season to right field, bringing in the game's first two runs. He later added a triple to his productive night, driving the offensive momentum. Wuilfredo Antunez also played a key role, connecting for his eighth homer in the fifth inning and following it up with a triple that added to the growing lead.
Lake County kept the pressure on in the later innings, with Juan Benjamin joining the action by tripling to center in the eighth, padding the advantage to 7-2. The teamās bats ultimately produced 10 runs, firmly sealing the win.
The Captains' pitching staff held strong throughout, with Robert Wegielnik earning the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three and allowing no hits. South Bend struggled to respond offensively, unable to chip away at the Captainsā growing lead as the game progressed.
