📰 Mentor Council Weighs Rezoning, Short-Term Rental Rules, and 911 System Upgrade

Mentor City Council

The Mentor City Council convened its regular meeting on June 17, 2025, addressing a range of issues from rezoning proposals to fleet upgrades, economic development grants, and state-level legislative concerns.

A major point of discussion was the proposed rezoning of 12.7 acres on Deepwood Boulevard from single-family (R4) to multifamily (R10) residential. The plan involves developing 110 townhouse-style units across 33 buildings, each with attached garages and access to recreation space. Planning staff and the applicant emphasized the alignment of the project with the city’s 2024 housing study, which identified a lack of modern, multifamily housing options. While planning staff recommended approval, council members raised concerns about the absence of finalized details, including sidewalk plans, the easement agreement for emergency access, and clarification on the number of units versus what utility infrastructure could support. Ultimately, the ordinance received a first reading and will be revisited July 1.

The Council also approved several ordinances, including a $3,000 economic development grant for GoGlow, a tanning franchise newly opened on Mentor Avenue, as well as the purchase of two dump trucks and a front-end loader for city services. A resolution was also passed adopting the updated Lake County 911 operations plan, preparing Mentor for the state-mandated transition to next-generation 911 capabilities.

Further discussions turned to short-term rentals, such as Airbnb. Some council members urged action on creating legislation to permit and regulate these rentals before potential state-level preemption removes local control. Others were wary, preferring to wait for clearer direction from the state legislature. The council agreed to revisit the issue during a future work session, with the Planning Commission's input still pending.

City Manager Ken Filipiak reported upcoming public works projects, including the repaving of Lakeshore Boulevard and a left-turn lane addition near the Mentor Library. A public memorial is scheduled for June 24 to honor two former public safety employees. The city also welcomed three new businesses.

The meeting concluded with a public comment from a resident expressing concern over tree removal at development sites and advocating for more affordable, modest housing options for younger and middle-income buyers.

🏨 History: Mentor House Hotel's Fiery Demise Shrouded in 19th Century Controversy

city of Mentor

The Mentor House Hotel, once a busy stop for visitors to President Garfield, was destroyed by fire in 1899. Its proprietor, H.F. Heintz, was under legal scrutiny from the Ohio Anti-Saloon League at the time, prompting suspicions of arson. While the fire was blamed on a faulty flue, controversy lingered. Heintz later leased another hotel nearby, and the original site was never rebuilt.

⚾ Guardians Fall Late as Giants Rally Past Cleveland 2-1

The Cleveland Guardians fell just short on Thursday in a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants, despite a solid outing from rookie starter Gavin Williams and three hits from Steven Kwan. The defeat snapped San Francisco’s four-game skid and handed Cleveland a frustrating loss in a game where they had early momentum.

Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the third when Kwan singled and later scored on a Carlos Santana base hit. Williams held the Giants scoreless through six innings, scattering four hits and striking out six before turning things over to the bullpen.

The trouble began in the seventh. Matt Festa allowed a leadoff single to Casey Schmitt and walked Jung Hoo Lee. After a sacrifice bunt, Nic Enright entered and gave up a pinch-hit double to Wilmer Flores that scored both runners. The Giants had gone just 1-for-23 with runners in scoring position during the series until Flores’ go-ahead hit.

San Francisco's Logan Webb was dominant, striking out nine and allowing no walks over seven innings. Camilo Doval pitched a clean ninth to earn his 11th save. The Guardians managed seven hits but couldn't capitalize late.

A diving catch by San Francisco’s Heliot Ramos in the first inning stopped a potential early scoring chance and proved crucial. Webb’s outing marked his MLB-leading 23rd start of seven or more innings since the start of 2024.

⚾ Captains Power Past Cubs 6-2 Behind Benjamin’s Blast and Luna’s Relief

The Lake County Captains earned a 6-2 victory over the South Bend Cubs on Thursday night, riding strong pitching and a second-inning power surge to seal the win.

Starting pitcher Josh Hartle threw four solid innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run despite issuing four walks. Reliever Jesus Luna picked up the win after taking over in relief and holding the Cubs scoreless. Others from bullpen also helped to shut down the Cubs.

The Captains' offense was sparked by Juan Benjamin, who blasted a three-run homer in the second inning to give Lake County an early 3-0 lead. Jacob Cozart and Wuilfredo Antunez both crossed the plate on the shot, swinging the win probability heavily in Lake County’s favor.

In the fourth, Maick Collado scored on Kyle Dernedde’s RBI double to extend the lead. Jonah Advincula then grounded into a double play, but it brought home another run as Dernedde scored, pushing the Captains ahead 5-2.

Lake County's defense remained steady, highlighted by a key double play turned in the seventh inning that snuffed out a South Bend scoring threat. Shortstop Jose Devers, second baseman Kyle Dernedde, and first baseman Kevin Rivas combined on the play.

The Captains added one more insurance run to cap off a well-rounded win and improve their season standing.
